Ode to Avos
By Wendy Hayes, Asst. Produce Manager
Howdy, y'all. We've got delicious, creamy avocados on special for you this week in the produce department, and we're excited about 'em. Almost everyone loves avos for their buttery taste and healthy fat content, but did you know that it' s recently been proven that they help the body absorb nutrients?
The Packer, THE newspaper of the produce industry, printed these findings back in the summer, and they are being submitted for publication in a scientific journal. I'll give you the less-scientific gist: Read more...

Ode to Avos (continued)
Basically, in an Ohio State University study, folks who ate their salad with a little avo on it absorbed more nutrients than those who went without it, and those who ate salads with a little more avo absorbed the most of all. Nutrients mentioned were alpha- and beta-caroteins (good ol' heart helpin' and cancer fightin' antioxidants) and also lutein, which is beneficial to the peepers. Avocados also provide the bod with omega-3 fatty acids and other good stuff like fiber, magnesium, and vitamin E.
But if that isn't enough, they're just plain YUMMY. How about some guacamole to spice up your winter (if it really is winter) meals? Sometimes I make what I call quick guac., because it only has 5 ingredients: avos, lots of garlic, lime, cilantro, and salt. If you want to make regular guac, add onion, tomato, and jalapeno to the above ingredients. OR you could make an avo sandwich, a favorite of mine: mayo, a thin slice of provolone, sliced avos, drizzled with a little lemon juice, salted, and with optional tomato slices and lettuce (don't forget the bread). Now go out and enjoy those avos! Love, wendy

Grillin' Weather? Steak, Salad & Sangria
The calendar says it's January but the mercury says this week is time to grill! Don't miss this opportunity to bring a little summertime fun into your wintertime doldrums. Weaver Street Market has all you need to throw together a Summer in January party. How about steak, salad and Sangria? Or for something on the lighter side, try our smoked pork chops, chicken breasts or fish. Toss a little of our Bourbon Pepper Sauce on any of them and you'll be smokin'. We've got organic potatoes and yams for a yummy side dish and plenty of greens and salad fixin's to round out your meal. To really give your night a festive summertime flavor, why not try this Sangria?

Paola's Sangria Recipe
Sangria is a highly individual drink so start with red wine and add or subtract the other ingredients according to your taste.
Red Wine
Sliced oranges, lemons, bananas
a little sugar
dash of red vermouth and rum
orange juice

For the red wine, Peg recommends Borsao Campo de Borja, Yunter Tinto (a tempranillo/cab mix) or Casamano Tinto Rueda. All are under $10/ bottle. If you feel daring, try using the Pomegranate wine, but add less sugar and orange juice.
