| St. Patrick's Day Special Treats Holidays are what make life special. The anticipation of special times and special treats makes them all the sweeter when they're here and the memories all the better. My annual favorite is the Pastry Bakery's Irish Oat Scones. I try to eat one everyday, knowing that they are here only a short time. Others swear by the Bread Bakery's Famous Irish Soda Bread and Dubliner Cheese paired with O'Hara's Celtic Stout Irish Ale or Highland Brewery's Gaelic Ale. Our meat department is already stocking Wellshire Farms Corned Beef Uncured Brisket for those traditionalists out there. Don't feel like cooking? Read more... |

| 10th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour Coming Soon! 6 New Farms! | |
Celebrate Earth Day this year by touring area small farms. The 10th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour will be held this year on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24. Farms will be open both days from 1pm to 5pm. This year, thirty farms are on the tour! All proceeds benefit the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association. Advance buttons are $20 for all farms. Buttons and maps will be available starting March 21 at Weaver Street Market locations.
We will feature a new farm here each week until the tour.Piedmont Biofuels The Piedmont Biofuels farm is a patchwork of co-operative projects on the Pittsboro-Moncure Road in Chatham County. We are best known for making biodiesel out of waste vegetable oil, and have a "refinery" on site that is operated by worker-members of the coop. Grease goes in, fuel comes out. Glycerin is a co-product of the biodiesel reaction, and we compost ours. With the help of Doug Jones, from the Land Lab at Central Carolina Community College, we maintain an intensive composting program that can handle many gallons of liquid glycerin each week. We also have a small herd of goats, managed by Oneas Mufandaedza, which means some of our glycerin goes into animal feed. Our front field acts as a laboratory for oil seed crop production. Thus far, we have done experiments with mustard, sunflower, and oilseed radish, all as potential crops for the making of biodiesel. With our diesel powered tractor, we are exploring ways to grow enough energy to power the farming operation. Energy balance is critical to our work, which is why we use solar thermal for facility and process heat. Intern and member housing on the project model various green building techniques and materials, all of which are heated with that plentiful local source of bioheat: naturally-downed firewood. We have a homemade, off-grid, filling station on the project that will be available to anyone wishing to fill up on biodiesel. | |
