Ever wonder how all of Weaver Street Market's delicious cookies get their round shape? For the past 13 years they have been scooped by "Scooper Monkeys." What? You don't know about the Scooper Monkeys? Well, I'd like to tell you that the pastry bakers are so crafty that they trained little monkeys to scoop cookies, but the truth is Scooper Monkeys are all the pastry bakers, pastry volunteers, and any employees with free time. That's right, those scrumptious cookies have been scooped by hand every day for the past 13 years! Why am I telling you this? Because a change has taken place and the Scooper Monkeys are getting some much needed help from the "Formomatic 2005" or as we like to call her, Ethel! More

The Epi: My Favorite Bread

What do you get when you cross a perfect golden French baguette with a pair of mean scissors? Why, the epi baguette, of course! Cut just before going into the oven, the epi de blé is the nubby, pointy cousin of the traditional baguette. It looks like a stalk of wheat grains, and that's just what its name means: epi de blé is French for sheaf of wheat.

Support Habitat for Humanity Nicaragua

Participate in Fiesta en Enero on Sunday, January 22, 2006 and help a group of UNC social work graduate students get to Nicaragua to build houses for poor families in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. We will travel to Leon, Nicaragua this March during our Spring Break to build as many houses as we can. This event is a fundraiser to help purchase plane tickets to Nicaragua and to purchase building supplies for our construction site. Donations will be accepted throughout the event and can also be made via our team website. We hope you'll join the fun and learn more about our trip, our team and the people we hope to support with our work. This is an event for adults and kids alike!

January Bread Class
The ArtsCenter & Weaver Street Bakery bring you another round of: Beginning Artisan Bread Making Classes

Your experience is hands-on from start to finish in this course taught by our chief bakers in the WSM bakery. All materials will be provided.

Call The ArtsCenter at 929-2787 to sign up. Cost is $95 plus a $20 supplies fee. Classes meet for four weeks from 6-8 pm each session.

This will be the only bread class offered this Winter/Spring so if you need to fine-tune your bread baking skills, sign up now.

Weaver Street Market will be donating 5%


Each year Weaver Street Market donates 5% of sales to the MLK Scholarship Fund which awards scholarships to deserving Chapel Hill-Carrboro high school students. Since 1993, they have awarded over 50 scholarships to students from a variety of racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
Sustainable Farming Classes
Central Carolina Community College located in Pittsboro offers a variety of classes in sustainable farming, gardening, and more. Register for spring classes now.

Classes beginning this week include two popular course taught by our local herbalist, Will Endres. Sign up for either:

These are two of the consistently popular courses at CCCC. Will's passion for plants is founded in his rural childhood in Central Virginia, where he gathered herbs when he was six years old. As an adult he studied with CF "Catfish" Gray, a West Virginia herb doctor and healer. For a number of years, he also studied with a Cherokee medicine man in the mountains of North Carolina. For the past 18 years, Will has made the Triangle his home, studying the plants here and developing his herbal tincture business.

Hope for the Holidays Results: Huge Success Again!
Thanks to all our customers who chose "Hope for the Holidays" products during the month of December, Weaver Street Market raised $5,432 to divide between the Chrysalis Fund, El Centro Latino, the Agricultural Resources Center, and Reach Out & Read.

Big sellers this year were Clementines, Bagged Biscotti, Salmon, Chicken Broth (who knew?) and of course, Peacestachios. It is due to the generosity and support of our customers that we are able to lend a helping hand to small, local organizations that do so much to enhance our community. Thank you!

English-American author, and Weaver Street Market employee, Geoffrey Gilson, will be giving readings from his book, "Dead Men Don't Eat Lunch," the gripping tale of Geoffrey's discovery that the mysterious death of his closest friend (Margaret Thatcher's favorite speechwriter) was intimately connected to the friend being a senior officer of and assassin for MI6, Britain's foreign intelligence service.

Geoffrey is a natural storyteller and comic, and his animated readings bring to life the high drama - and sometimes low comedy - of his unique and ongoing adventures. Geoffrey is currently residing and working in the Chapel Hill area, while he puts the finishing touches to his book, and then sets about getting it published.

Belgian Beer Dinner
Experience the Diversity of Belgian Beers

We are calling upon all self-proclaimed beer geeks and beer lovers alike to join us for Panzanella's first ever Beer Dinner! As many of you know, the "Pop the Cap" campaign prevailed in its efforts to repeal the ban on beers over six percent alcohol in North Carolina. Ever since, the true "beer nerds" have come out of the woodwork with a vengeance, and they have certainly unveiled their true colors! Since much of the excitement has been over the fine Belgian beers now available to us, we've decided to kick off our Beer Dinner series with a Belgian theme.

Our own fellow worker and serious beer purist, Jason Cole, will be our speaker for the evening. Belgian He will educate us on Belgian beers and their many styles, and help demystify beer terms such as 'top fermenting' and 'bottle-conditioned.' As beer critic Michael Jackson states, "no other country (even those with far more breweries) has among its native styles of beer such diversity, individuality, idiosyncrasy and color as Belgium." Find out the difference between Trappist Ale and Abbey Ale. Are wheat beer and white beer the same, and what exactly is a 'Farmhouse Ale'? Inquiring minds and palates will be rewarded with numerous tasty dishes and beer offerings. Loyal wine enthusiasts beware! You'll find serious competition in the 'food and drink pairing' arena here, since good beer may change your dining experience forever! Come join a lucky minority of people who will have truly experienced great beer and food in delicious harmony!
