Fresh Sushi at Weaver Street Market continued
The story of sushi begins 3000 years ago when peasants carried their fish wrapped in rice made with vinegar. Back then, the rice was thrown away before the fish was eaten. In later centuries salt was substituted for vinegar and somewhere along the line, the rice became part of the meal. Sujin, the vital force behind Sujin Sushi, explained the story of sushi to me with rapid hand motions. Her involvement with sushi did not begin until she came to Carrboro and worked with Chibo, a renowned local chef (you may remember him from Akai Hana). It was then she discovered she had the "hands" for sushi, and thus sushi became her passion. Although she enjoyed working with Chibo, ultimately she decided she wanted her own business.

Since joining Weaver Street Market, Sujin's sales have steadily climbed about 10% a year. Although Sujin swears that more people eat sushi when it's sunny, we think once you try it, you'll want to eat sushi all the time. In addition to making sushi on the spot, you can special order party platters about a day ahead of your event.

Fight the Flu
By Jenni Butler, WSM Wellness Department
We're not out of the woods yet, because the flu is circulating back for a second round in North Carolina. And what's worse is that some of the strains that are attacking folks are resistant to the flu shot. Well never fear, the Weaver Street Market Wellness Department is here and we are armed and ready to take on this pesky flu virus. There are several things that can be done to prevent the flu from bothering you. The number one thing I can think of is medicinal mushrooms. Try New Chapter's Host Defense. It has been shown to increase human Natural Killer cells by up to 300%. This means you will be bathed in immune support. Also, I have heard and experienced amazing results from Suki's Blends Ultimate Immune Boost. She uses a blend of local and organic herbs that provide infection protection beyond your wildest dreams. That's all fine and dandy for winter defense, but what if the flu has snuck in while your back was turned? No worries, because we have some excellent flu fighters that will shorten the duration and ease the symptoms. Boiron's Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic remedy that will relieve fever, chills, aches and pains. It works especially well if it is taken at the onset of symptoms. One of my favorites is New Chapter's Sinus and Respiratory. It has an array of immune stimulating constituents like garlic, oregano, elderberry, and goldenseal. Also, try Sovereign Silver for remarkable anti-bacterial results. So there is hope yet to avoid being run down by the "big bad flu." Just swing by WSM's Wellness Department for some bona fide wellness.

On the Street
Hillsborough? Hillsborough!
By Christy (the gal whose job it is to get you to join the co-op)

I signed a contract for a house in downtown Hillsborough a few days before the Board of Adjustment meeting when they denied Weaver Street Market's proposal to become part of the Gateway Center on Churton Street. Certainly it was unwise on my part to decide to move before even knowing that the project was going to happen, but a Weaver Street Market in Hillsborough seemed like a no-brainer to me.

Well, in the last two weeks I've learned a good bit about town process. And, in the last two weeks, I've learned a good bit about the folks who live in Hillsborough and want the Weave to come to their town. I spent three days after the meeting answering emails from folks encouraging us to keep trying and telling us how much we're wanted there. This, as I understand, is only a fraction of the 50 or so emails and phone calls that the new Mayor received about our project. And, did you all see the 22 letters to the Editor in the News of Orange?

Thanks so much to all of the folks who took the time to contact town officials, the papers and us about this project. Here in Carrboro, we're all still very excited and working hard to find a way with the Town of Hillsborough to get things worked out. So, being the lot of optimists that we are, we are quite pleased to announce an Informational Meeting scheduled for Thursday, February 16 at 7pm in the Big Barn Convention Center. We'll talk about plans for the store including what products you'd like to see and the project's financing. (Yes, that means I'll be asking you to join the co-op.) We'll have plenty of cookies and door prizes, too. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring their ideas.

Hope to see you there!

Veggie Revolution at Ibooks
Sally Kneidel, PhD, and Sara Kate Kneidel will talk about their new book Veggie Revolution: Smart Choices for a Healthy Body and a Healthy Planet at 7:00 on Wednesday, January 25 at the Internationalist Bookstore, 405 West Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

Veggie Revolution covers all the issues you might wonder about when considering a vegetarian diet. The authors toured and interviewed at four factory farms in North Carolina, and at four small NC farms that use sustainable and humane practices. Their book examines the environmental and health consequences of both kinds of farming, and describes the animals' living conditions. It includes interviews with agricultural and food science professors, environmentalists, government officials, a supermarket manager, a cafeteria manager, and lots of college students. It also has a wealth of nutritional info and a feast of vegetarian recipes. The authors inspire us with hope for change, through our own efforts as informed consumers.

This book is available at Weaver Street Market in the Wellness Department.
New Board Member takes his seat
Seth Elliott, the newly elected worker-owner representative to the Board of Directors, officially started his term at the Board's annual retreat on January 17th. Seth has been working for Weaver Street Market for 4 years in the Pastry and Bread Bakeries.

Seth is looking forward to his new role representing the staff in the governance of the co-op. "I would like to be a voice for other WSM employees who, for whatever reason, cannot involve themselves as much as they would like to in the shaping of their workplace."

At the retreat, the Board appointed its officials for the upcoming year and we are happy to report that Seth is taking on the dual roles of Board Secretary and Treasurer. Also, for only the second time in Weaver Street Market's history, a worker-owner representative on the Board will be acting as Board Chairperson. Jacob Myers, of the Carrboro store's Specialty Department, now in the second year of his first term, will take the Chair's seat from our long-term Board Representative Linda Stier, who, we hope, will enjoy a much deserved break from running the Board.
