Howdy. Hopefully y'all have been studying up through the years, and you remember how every time you come to Weaver Street Market, you're just surrounded by aphrodisiacs - especially in the Produce Department. There are so darn many tantalizing fruits and vegetables that you may become overwhelmed as you shop. But never fear - the Wellness Department has some passionate publications to guide you through the gastronomic seduction process. One of my favorites is InterCourses: An aphrodisiac cookbook by Martha Hopkins and Randall Lockridge. It's a beautiful book, complete with artful (read: hot) photographs. The recipes are delicious, and the testimonials are fun. This is my fav book of this genre currently in stock. More

Passionate Cooking continued
We also have a new hardcover version of The Seduction Cookbook by Diane Brown. This is a well - written collection that also includes fun folklore and simple, yet elegant offerings for the object of your desire. (I own a copy of this one, and you should, too.)

Next up is a new book, one that I've yet to lay eyes on, but it sure sounds good: How to Make Love and Dinner at the Same Time: 200 slow cooker recipes to heat up the bedroom instead of the kitchen, by Rebecca Field Jager. Clever, huh? Who doesn't like dinner that "cooks itself?" Slow cookers, (a.k.a. crock pots) only require a little work in the beginning, and then you can just walk away. What you choose to do with your time is up to you!

Last, but not least, we will have a few copies of one of the most sensual food-related books ever, Like Water for Chocolate, by Laura Esquivel. If you've never read this, or your sweetie hasn't, it's a MUST for this Valentine's Day. It's way better than a greeting card, and it includes traditional recipes you can try - or you can just read them if you are not a cook. I think I'm gonna have to read this one again.

Local Producer: Sarah & Michael's Flowers
You wouldn't even know it was there. Nestled just behind the house on a decline that disguises the source of our beautiful Asiatic lilies as just a residence, is Sarah & Michael's Farm, LLC. The cut flower production facility rests on five acres in north Durham and is famous for the premier quality Asiatic lilies grown year-round.

Sarah Levitt and Michael Turner, and their one full time employee of three years, Rosi, do everything in the production process including schedule plantings and harvest, order bulbs and seeds, build and maintain greenhouses, prepare soil, plant, irrigate, fertilize, harvest, market and deliver! With all this and more to do, division of labor becomes a necessity. Sarah does the scheduling, ordering, crop projections, harvest and selling. Scheduling is the most difficult part. They must coordinate at least 25 varieties of lilies alone according to what conditions each variety prefers, customer demand, North Carolina weather and light conditions. Not to mention all the other flowers! Sarah & Michael's Farm, LLC gets a delivery of lily bulbs every week! They plant over 100,000 lilies every year.

Michael does the technical research, construction, irrigation set up and maintenance, and until now, delivering. They just hired an additional full time employee, Manuel, to deliver. This was important, as Michael was spending at least 25 hours a week on the road delivering product all throughout the Triangle and as far away as Greensboro. They decided that in order to produce the very best product, it would be better to have Michael on the farm more. Sarah & Michael's Farm, LLC produces flowers in 10 greenhouses, all designed and built by Michael. When they first began, they didn't like the available greenhouse designs out there, so Michael enlisted the help of Paul Nelson of NC State to help develop the design they use now.
Recipes: Pine Nut Pie
(trust me, it's to-die-for) from...
INTERCOURSES: An Aphrodisiac Cookbook
by Martha Hopkins and Randal Lockridge
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
2 extra large eggs, beaten
1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1 Tbs. all purpose flour
1 Tbs. heavy cream
8 Tbs. (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup pine nuts (I like to use a whole cup or so)
1 9" pie crust (WSM makes a wonderful one!)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients except the pine nuts and the crust in a bowl and whisk until well blended. Fold in the pine nuts. Pour it all into the pie crust. Bake for about 50 minutes. It's so great! (P.S. I've used salted butter by mistake, and no one complained.)
Romance away!
Love, wendy

Love Your Heart
By Jenni Butler, Wellness Department
It's Heart Healthy month and cupid is here to remind us to love and take care of ourselves. This means that it is time to start paying attention to our hearts. Americans are at the highest risk for heart disease and it is our biggest killer. Heart disease is also 100% preventable with changes to diet and lifestyle. It doesn't take a heart surgeon to know that high fat, high calorie, and processed foods contribute to cardiovascular problems, and natural foods help to relieve them. A natural food diet for a healthy heart includes whole fiber foods, high minerals including lots of potassium and magnesium, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory berries, oxygen-rich green veggies, and vegetable source proteins.

The Wellness Department also has an array of great supplements that will help you love your heart. CoQ-10 strengthens the heart muscle and we currently have Source Naturals and WSM brand on sale. Gaia's Hawthorn is also on sale and the benefits of Hawthorn are endless. It contains a high percentage of flavonoids, which strengthen veins and capillaries, and hawthorn has been known to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure. Another great reducer of LDL and triglycerides is Gugulipid, currently on sale form Nature's Plus. Garlic is an additional heroic heart healer because it improves aortic elasticity, and EFA's are an excellent source of Omega-3's, which decrease the "stickiness" of blood platelets. So besides a quality diet change, make sure to focus on a healthy lifestyle and exercise plan. Make sure to incorporate stress-reducing activities, for example, a glass of red wine with dinner can relieve stress and raise HDL. Make sure to stop in the Wellness Department for heart healthy tips.

New Kids at Celebrity Dairy
By Brit Pfann, Celebrity Dairy
The Celebrity Dairy hoofers have finally decided to have their kids (14 born yesterday, and so far today one set of twins, and one set of triplettes) - just in time for our Spring Open Barn event. Always the weekend before Valentine's Day, we're inviting all to celebrate the arrival of the new baby goats on Saturday and Sunday February 11 & 12 from 12:00-5:00pm. Dress for the weather. We'll have some hot soups, beverages, and other light food available if you're hungry. And as always, the event is free.

New babies mean the milk is back. We'll be starting our twice daily milking and cheesemaking. Look for Celebrity Dairy cheese to be available for sale around the middle of February!

And now, back to the babies!
