Note about Bananas
Currently, there is a shortage of both fair trade bananas and organic bananas. We are looking for alternative suppliers/growers to meet our needs. This may take several weeks. In the interim, bananas prices will be higher and we may have to substitute conventional/alternative brands. This problem is industry wide, and not just limited to Weaver Street Market.
The Mango Daytona 500
By Christy Raulli, Owner Services
You might be asking yourself, "What do mangoes and the Daytona 500 have to do with each other" Well, I don't know. But for the past 8 years my family has celebrated the Mango Daytona 500 while the normal NASCAR fans are just eating chips.

It takes a little bit of planning to get mangoes just right in the middle of February, so I went to chat with Wendy in our produce department for some suggestions. According to Wendy, who knows her produce, with fruits that come from far away, like mangoes, avocadoes and bananas, you just need to plan ahead a little bit. The time to buy mangoes for this weekend is now. (Um, hey mom, can you get some mangoes for this weekend?) Put the mangoes in a paper bag like you do tomatoes, and they'll be just right in a few short days. We have big, beautiful mangoes on special this week: 4 for $5. And there are amazing strawberries to go with them for $3.99/quart AND three different types of limes for you to squeeze over them: key limes, organic sweet limes (they're yellow!), and traditional limes that are super sweet and tasty now.

And, for the rest of you, we have great chips on sale, too! Kettle Chips for $1.49, and big bags of Bearitos Tortilla chips for $1.99
Chocolate & Strawberries
Make your own sweet Valentine's Treat!

36 strawberries (about two 1-pint baskets), unhulled
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (about 9 ounces)
1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups chocolate sprinkles (about 6 ounces)

Line large baking sheet with waxed paper. Wipe strawberries clean; dry with paper towels. Stir chocolate chips and shortening in top of double boiler set over simmering water until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth. Place chocolate sprinkles in shallow bowl. Holding 1 strawberry by its green top, dip 3/4 of berry into melted chocolate. Let excess chocolate drip off, then dip into chocolate sprinkles. Place on waxed-paper-lined sheet. Repeat dipping remaining strawberries into chocolate, then into sprinkles. Refrigerate until chocolate coating is firm, about 1 hour. (Can be prepared 8 hours ahead. Keep refrigerated.)

In Memory of Grace Howard
By Jim Tippens, Long-time WSM Home Delivery Volunteer
Grace was one of the favorite clients of the Home Delivery Volunteers at Weaver Street Market. When I started delivering groceries to her back in 1991, she was able to get our of bed and into a wheel chair unaided. She had MS. Every time she called us on the phone, or we phoned her, she was cheerful and optimistic, greeting us with a sing-song "Hello, hello, hello." Her door was always unlocked, so when we went there we would identify ourselves from Weaver Street, and she would welcome us joyfully by name! Later, she did the same even from her bedroom, which is out of sight of the front door.

She was an inspiration for all of us. She did her own cooking and always ordered fresh vegetables, whole milk yogurt, a pint of half and half, coffee, as starters. As the years went by, she had to have help getting out of bed, then finally was completely bed-ridden. Yet she always exhibited an optimism that made us all amazed. This was when she had to train her aides to cook the way she wanted. I remember one aide that loved her dearly and would have stayed with her until Grace's death, but had to leave after breaking her shoulder having tripped over Grace's wheel chair. Later aides came and went regularly, some staying only a week, which was a trial for Grace, but she remained up-beat.

She was one of the early owners of the WSM Co-op, with a member number in the 500s. Those of us who knew her are saddened by her passing, and we shall long remember the inspiration she was for all of us.

Argentina Wine Dinner
Monday, March 13, 7pm at Panzanella

Join us for a tasting tour of Argentina, South America's most important wine-producing country. We will be focusing on wines produced by a man by the name of José Zuccardi. In the Mendoza region of Argentina, Mr. Zuccardi produces wines under three different labels, Zuccardi, Santa Julia, and Vida Organica. He farms all his vineyards organically, although they are not yet certified. He has been Argentina's Business Man of the Year, and he treats his workers as well as he treats his wines. Santa Julia is named after his daughter and boasts 100% estate grown fruit with hand harvesting, two qualities very few wines can claim in this price range. José is always tinkering to get the most from his vines. His name is usually written in the company of words like 'dynamic' and 'forward thinking.' Whether it's new technology, new trellising, new rootstocks, new varietals—nothing remains constant as he evolves and continually strives for excellence in the vineyard. His goal is to produce the best quality wines he can and provide value. Even his premium wine is a mere $21 on the shelf and is produced in a quality and manner commonly found in wines 4 or 5 times the price. We will welcome Seth Gross of Henry Wine group who will guide us through our tasting and slide show presentation of his visit to Argentina and Mr. Zuccardi's winery and vineyards. Join us for an evening of wonderful wines and plenty of delicious food created to complement them by Panzanella Chef, Peter McCloskey.

Tickets are $35 and may be purchased at our Carrboro Customer Service Desk or at Panzanella. Seating is limited so reserve early.
German Beer Dinner
Monday, March 27th, 7pm at Panzanella

If one were to envision the quintessential beer drinking experience, one might invoke the following images: grandiose beer fountains amidst a rustic German hillside, overlooking the Rhine river, with countrymen laughing and singing jovially next to their steins, overrunning with beer. Sadly, I doubt most of us will get to experience such an ambiance in beer euphoria, but we can always try to recreate our own. That said, I bid all who would like to celebrate and learn in the spirit of camaraderie about beer, its preservation and tradition, to join us at the German beer dinner! As it was in Babylonia, the quality of German beer is legislatively regulated by the authorities, and beer is still an important source of tax revenue. The first regulation appeared in the town of Augsburg, where establishments that served bad beer or dishonest amounts would be fined and their beer destroyed. Imagine, a beer law that would actually be worthwhile! The most famous brewing law in Germany is the Reinheitsgebot, or for us Deutsch-challenged, the "Purity Law". This law was ordered by Duke Wilhem IV of Bavaria in 1516, and states that beer should only be brewed from barley, hops and water. Back then, the effects of yeast in the air were unknown, so the use of yeast eventually became accepted as the fourth and final ingredient allowed to make beer. Since the Reinheitsgebot, after witnessing Bavarian beers rise to top-knotch status, other lands of Germany followed suit in enforcing this regulation and have continued to make it the most important law affecting German beer brewing today.

This strict control over ingredients and dedication to tradition in brewing has led to a variety of beer styles in Germany that have been perfected over the centuries. In Germany, different regions specialize in different styles of beer. For instance, Hamburg and northern Germany are known for their dry Pilsners; Berlin specializes in Berliner Weisse (a white beer with a shot of syrup); Dortmund and the Ruhr Valley are famous for their Lagers; Cologne for its light and refreshing Koelsch beers; neighboring Dusseldorf for its stronger and darkers ales; while Bavaria's Helle Lagers (light lagers) and Weizen (wheat) beers are also known all over the world. These are just a few of the delicious beer styles Germany has to offer, so get your place reserved now so that you can savor the nuances of German beer while feasting on some tasty fare!

Tickets are $35 and may be purchased at our Carrboro Customer Service Desk or at Panzanella. Seating is limited so reserve early.
