Weaver Street Market has been carrying George Jones' bedding plants for the last four years. George used to be a high-speed machine operator in a packaging plant, growing vegetables and plants for a hobby. He worked 8 to 10 hours a day and all he could think about was getting home to his garden. For eight years, he bought his starters from Stensen Greenhouses. The Stensen's had owned the greenhouse business for over twenty years when they sold it to George and his hobby became his profession. The greenhouses sit on two acres of open, sunny land outside of Goldston, not far from the Alston House where a Civil War re-enactment takes place each August. Starters for annuals, perennials, and vegetables pack the greenhouses from end to end.

Bedding Plants are Here continued
George grows Begonias, Sweet William, Shasta Daisies, purple basil, and many, many other house plants, garden plants, and vegetable starters. At this time of year you'll find lettuce, broccoli, cabbage and radicchio starters.

The variety of plants that George grows is astounding, from 26 different kinds of tomatoes to the cocktail variety of Begonias called Whiskey, Vodka and Gin. George enjoys learning new common names for plants like the Spider plant, which customers have requested by names such as the Airplane plant, the Helicopter plant, and the Bad Mother plant. When he gets a request for something he doesn't recognize, he invites the customer back to the greenhouse to see if they can spot the plant they have in mind.

George planted his first vegetable garden at the age of seven when he begged for a plot in his father's flower garden. "My granddaddy was a tenant farmer, and it's in my blood." Look for George Jones' Bedding Plant outside our Carrboro store and soon to be at our Southern Village Store.

Welcome our New Plant Buyer: Nicole Becker
You'll see a new face in our produce department flitting around the flowers. Nicole Becker has taken over the floral position. She just moved here from Norfolk, Virginia to be near friends and to make music and art. She was a theatre major and hopes to pursue that in the future, but right now, she's exploring her other creative outlets. She worked at a florist shop in Virginia and was happy to find another job with flowers and plants, but she's even more excited about how open and accepting her new co-workers are and how much they care about each other and their jobs here at Weaver Street Market.
Strawberries & WSM Pound Cake
Here's an early spring pick-me-up: Strawberries and Weaver Street Market Pound Cake. It's simple to assemble and you'll find most everything you need right in the produce department.

Grab a pound cake and a box of strawberries. Wash and cut the berries into halves. Let sit just a little while to let the juice extract. You can even sprinkle a little sugar on your berries to pull out more juice to make a sauce.

Cover a slice of pound cake with berries and top with fresh whipped Maple View cream or ice cream for a real treat.

Jazz Brunch Begins April 2

Please come to the final Winter Fridays "Filmmaker's Film Series" featuring work by award-winning filmmaker, Elizabeth Bouiss. The show will be on Friday, March 31st at 8:30 at the King Street Masonic Lodge in downtown Hillsborough accross from the old Colonial Inn. The filmmaker will be present for the screenings. A question and answer session will be followed by a reception with the filmmaker.

Speak Your Mind explores the First Amendment and dissent since September 11, 2001, presenting an important examination of First Amendment rights and the threat against those rights at the present time. SYM takes the viewer on this journey using interviews of civil rights advocates, activists and every day people brought to life with footage of protests, police actions and original music. On-the-street footage of activists contextualizes and shapes the film. Thoughtful commentary and analysis of the Constitutional scholars sheds light on the consequences of the government's policies and actions as filmed and experienced by ordinary citizens.

Four Days of Peace, Love and Music

The Fourth Annual Spring Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance is quickly approaching. It is taking place Earth Day weekend, April 20-23 in Silk Hope. We are happy to announce an exciting line-up: North Carolina's upcoming stars The Avett Brothers; Brazilian percussion and dance ensemble Cyro Baptista & Beat the Donkey; Winnipeg Canada's The Duhks; swing, cajun and jazz players Red Stick Ramblers; festival favorites Donna the Buffalo; Louisiana's Keith Frank & his Soileau Zydeco Band; Asheville's Mad Tea Party; Chapel Hill's Big Fat Gap; Sacred Steel artist's The Lee Boys; plus many more.

Traditional Greek Easter Wine Dinner

Join us Monday, April 10 at Panzanella for a tasting tour of Greek wines. Just in time for Greek Easter, we have chosen wines that are both celebratory and traditional. Wine has been an important part of Greek culture for over 4000 years as the numerous archeological discoveries throughout Greece have revealed. The ancient Greeks knew well the nutritional value of wine, as it became an inseparable part of their daily regimen. Greek Easter, the country's most important religious festival, arrives accompanied by the smells of spring, the rebirth of nature and the flower-carpeted ground. Join us on a historic and flavorful tour of Greece and the Easter Spirit. Many of the traditions that bond the generations together occur during the Easter feast. Easter is the most sacred and celebrated of all of the Greek holidays. We welcome Isabelle Sofras Edwards of CHL International to guide us through this enjoyable and tasty evening. Plenty of delicious dishes will be prepared by Panzanella chef, Peter McCloskey.
