Spring is always an exciting time of year for everyone. New growth, warm weather, sunshine, etc.... Panzanella loves spring because all of our local favorite farms start their season. Eco Farm with arugula, spicy greens, and broccoli rabe. Periry-Winkle Farm with spring onions and leeks. Peregrine Farm and Maple Spring Gardens also following suit with all kinds of fresh produce - juicy, firm eggplant, heirloom tomatoes, eventually peppers, peppers and more peppers. I am very fond of beans, I really am, and potatoes....well who doesn't love a potato, but after six months I'm craving some local vegetables.

Spring at Panzanella continued
I love this time of year personally because my relationship with all the farmers picks up after a dormant winter. It's like reconnecting with an old friend. Some will have all their old standbys, some will have new things; Norma Burns from Bluebird Farm, who I refer to as my designer farmer, surprises me every year with something that is not even supposed to grow here. Now is the planning time for our summer season: Farm Dinners, Totally Local Dinners and great fresh specials. New menus for all meals reflecting earth's great bounty will practically write themselves as meat, fish and produce arrive at our back door and scream out "I want to be soup", "I want to be in pasta" and "make me ice-cream." Look for our new Brunch menu this weekend - open at 10:30 am, and our new Lunch menu April 4, featuring Spring Salad Madness!

T.S. Designs, a local printed apparel company based in Burlington, NC, has been supplying t-shirts to Weaver Street Market for a little over a year; some of you might have noticed the Clothing Facts banner behind the check out aisles. This partnership is the latest example of their efforts to promote sustainable products made in North Carolina. T.S. Designs has been in the apparel industry for almost 30 years and five years ago experienced first-hand the erosion of textile jobs due to global competition. Most of their original client base, companies like Nike, Polo, and Gap, have moved offshore. T.S Designs decided to change their course and rebuild a company based upon values they believe are core to successful, sustainable business. "Our mission is to build a sustainable company by simultaneously looking after People, the Planet, and Profits." The Weaver Street Market t-shirts are 100% Organic Cotton, created and printed in North Carolina, and are printed with REHANCE Apparel Technology eliminating hazardous PVC's or phthalates. T.S. Designs is also involved in array of other sustainable activities from biodiesel to solar power. More information can be found at www.tsdesigns.com. The founders and employees of T.S. Designs believe it is important to walk the talk and demonstrate action especially in an area of the country where the idea of "business sustainability" is just catching on. They have also partnered to launch a new retail apparel brand called Green Label Organic www.greenlabel.com based upon these same principles. Green Label Organic apparel can be purchased from Townsend Bertram and Company along with many other fine retailers.

This year's Piedmont Farm Tour t-shirts were printed by T.S. Designs and are available now at Weaver Street Market in three fun colors. You'll also be able to purchase them at most farms on the Farm Tour, April 22 & 23. Stop by Weaver Street Market to pick up a map, buy your button to all 31 farms...and buy a 100% Organic Farm Tour T-Shirt!

WCOM Benefits
At each wine show, Weaver Street Market donates a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the souvenir wine glasses to a local organization. For this year's Spring Wine Shows a portion of the proceeds will benefit WCOM Community Radio.

WCOM is a community radio station with a studio in downtown Carrboro and an antenna at Scroggs Elementary School in Southern Village. WCOM is the first low-power FM community radio station in the area to be set up under a program established by the Federal Communications Commission in 2000. Low-power FM is grassroots radio—an effort to counterbalance the increasing concentration of radio ownership by a few large corporations.

Producer: Mitch Wood
Co-producer: Elizabeth Bouiss
This award winning documentary captures the experiences of the American women who served in Vietnam. Quiet for years, this film breaks their silence. "Free speech is the oxygen of democracy!" says a protester outside the Republican National Convention in 2004.

Speak Your Mind explores the First Amendment and dissent since September 11, 2001, presenting an important examination of First Amendment rights and the threat against those rights at the present time. SYM takes the viewer on this journey using interviews of civil rights advocates, activists and every day people brought to life with footage of protests, police actions and original music. On-the-street footage of activists contextualizes and shapes the film. Thoughtful commentary and analysis of the Constitutional scholars sheds light on the consequences of the government's policies and actions as filmed and experienced by ordinary citizens.

Advanced tickets are $5.00, available at Calloway Jewelers in downtown Hillsborough, or on-line www.hillsboroughartscouncil.org. Tickets are also available at the door on the day of the show for $7.00. This program may not be suitable for small children. This event is sponsored by The Hillsborough Arts Council and Weaver Street Market.
Coffee Producers Event
April 5, 3:00 to 4:30 pm in Panzanella

Larry's Beans and Weaver Street Market are pleased to partner in hosting representatives from two producer cooperatives - PANGOA of Peru and Fondo Paez of Colombia. Join us at Panzanella on Wednesday, April 5 at 2:30 for a lively discussion about Fair Trade, organic coffee and the Fair Trade movement.

The core of this presentation will focus on the first-hand experiences of the producer partners as Fair Trade, organic coffee cooperatives and suppliers for Fair Trade, organic roasters like Larry's Beans and the other members of Cooperative Coffees. The representatives of PANGOA and Fondo Paez will talk about their respective small-scale farmer cooperatives. The producer representatives will also talk about the challenges they face in developing and sustaining their cooperatives' production of Fair Trade, organic coffee well as their expectations for the future.

Goals for this event:

1. To provide consumers with an introduction to Fair Trade, organic coffee and the producer cooperatives who supply the US market.
2. To provide consumers with the opportunity to meet and discuss Fair Trade and organics with producers from emerging economies.
3. To provide consumers with first hand accounts of active Fair Trade, organic coffee producers.
4. To clarify and create a dialogue about the connection between conscious consumption in the US and small-scale producers overseas.

There is no charge for this event.

Refreshments (including coffee!) will be served.

Seating is limited, please sign up in advance at the Customer Service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro
