April is here and signs of spring are everywhere: trees are blooming with the most beautiful colors I've seen in quite some time. Also, there was that greenish yellow glow on the sidewalk to my house. No, it wasn't aliens that landed; it was pine pollen covering everything. Another sure sign of spring is the delicious holiday favorites and enticing new treats from the Weaver Street Market bakers. Between April 9 and April 16, Weaver Street bakers will be featuring Cream Puff Bunnies and Biddies. The Cream Puff Bunnies you may know from last year -- adorable bunnies made from pâte à choux (puff pastry dough), filled with sweet diplomat cream (pudding and whipped cream).

11th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour!
Celebrate Earth Day by touring area small farms
April 22 & 23
31 Farms $30, $25 in advance
7 new farms!

Spring brings the opportunity to visit local farms on the 11th annual Piedmont Farm Tour. The rising cost of shipping food long distances and concerns over food safety make getting to know your local producers a great idea—and the Piedmont Farm Tour is the ideal time. It takes less gas to get local food to you, and knowing exactly how your local farmers produce your food can allay food safety issues. Five new farms and two new vineyards and wineries on the tour this year attest to the strength of our local agriculture. Children will be delighted with the chickens, goats, pigs, cows, and horses, while Mom and Dad can learn from the farmers how to grow veggies and flowers in their own backyard.

Farming by the sun, moon, and stars, Heirloom Devon cows, quality baked goods, converted tobacco fields, baby animals, grass-fed cattle, and free-range chickens are just some of the things you'll see and learn about on our five new-to-the-tour farms: Castlemaine Farm, Braeburn Farm, Infinity Farm, Matzah Rising Farm, and Castle Rock Gardens. Horizon Cellars and the Benjamin Vineyards & Winery add an exciting new vinicultural element to the Farm Tour this year. Now's the time to learn about this wonderful new trend in North Carolina agriculture—or returning trend, for those of you who know your pre-Prohibition North Carolina history.

Discover once again the importance of farmland to the health and life of our community. Organized as a fundraiser for the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA), the Piedmont Farm Tour will draw thousands of visitors to the farms. The CFSA is a membership-based organization of more than 750 farmers, processors, gardeners, businesses, and individuals in North and South Carolina who are committed to sustainable agriculture and organic farming. Last year alone, the tour raised over $14,000 with over 6,000 visitors to the farms. Weaver Street Market and CFSA partnered 11 years ago to bring the Piedmont Farm Tour to the community so that folks could connect with where their food comes from, and as an expression of their commitment to local, sustainable agriculture.

To take the tour, load up your car with family and friends, buy your ticket (a button), and plot a course on the map provided. The map indicates where there are bathroom stops, who's selling what, and what will interest children. The tour dates are Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23 from 1 to 5 pm. The cost is $30 per car for all 31 farms, or $10 per car per farm on the days of the tour. You can pick up a map and purchase your button for all farms in advance for $25 at the following locations: Weaver Street Market in Carrboro; Weaver Street Market at Southern Village and Niche Gardens in Chapel Hill; the General Store Café, Fearrington Farmers' Market, and Chatham Marketplace in Pittsboro; Durham Co-op Grocery and the Seeds booth at the Durham Farmers' Market; Maple View Ice Cream Store in Hillsborough; Harmony Farms and Triangle Nutrition in Raleigh; Deep Roots Market in Greensboro; Benjamin Vineyards & Winery in Graham; and Horizon Cellars in Siler City. All proceeds benefit the CFSA. The farmers request that you do not visit the farms outside the posted hours. The Piedmont Farm Tour is co-sponsored by the CFSA, and Weaver Street Market.

Coffee Producers Event
April 5, 3:00 to 4:30 pm in Panzanella

Larry's Beans and Weaver Street Market are pleased to partner in hosting representatives from two producer cooperatives - PANGOA of Peru and Fondo Paez of Colombia. Join us at Panzanella on Wednesday, April 5 at 2:30 for a lively discussion about Fair Trade, organic coffee and the Fair Trade movement.

The core of this presentation will focus on the first-hand experiences of the producer partners as Fair Trade, organic coffee cooperatives and suppliers for Fair Trade, organic roasters like Larry's Beans and the other members of Cooperative Coffees. The representatives of PANGOA and Fondo Paez will talk about their respective small-scale farmer cooperatives. The producer representatives will also talk about the challenges they face in developing and sustaining their cooperatives' production of Fair Trade, organic coffee well as their expectations for the future.

At this event you will get an introduction to Fair Trade, organic coffee and the producer cooperatives who supply the US market; have the opportunity to meet and discuss Fair Trade and organics with producers from emerging economies; hear first-hand accounts of active Fair Trade, organic coffee producers; and engage in a dialogue about the connection between conscious consumption in the US and small-scale producers overseas.

There is no charge for this event. Refreshments (including coffee!) will be served. Seating is limited, please sign up in advance at the Customer Service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro
Fair Trade Chocolate Presentation
Ecuadorian Chocolate Varieties and International Cocoa Markets: Niche Market Strategies Help Small Farmers Earn a Living Wage, by Chris Lupoli and speakers from the Kallari Association

April 9, 5:00 pm

Although chocolate is a staple food for many U.S. citizens, few are familiar with this unique rainforest crop and the world markets which are fueled by our consumption. We review the natural history of cocoa trees in Ecuador and how cocoa varieties have continued to lose their quality during the past century. The audience will learn about the production cycle of chocolate from the steamy Amazon cocoa fields to a high altitude Andean chocolate factory. Presentation includes technical farming practices from the Kallari Amazon cocoa farmers, and describes the various types of cocoa found throughout the world. The discussion delves into the Kallari varieties of cocoa, which were somehow rescued by the genetic unraveling of the high quality Forestero variety of Ecuadorian cocoa. It further touches on fair trade vs. free trade, industry demands, and how niche markets and local processing can help small farmer cooperatives earn a living wage by producing organic cocoa beans. The Kallari Association is a grassroots coalition of Ecuadorian Amazon artists and organic cocoa producers. Its goals are community viability and natural resource conservation, through sharing knowledge and preserving the Kichwa culture. For further information, please see their beautiful website: www.kallari.com.

Chris Lupoli is coordinator of the Working Group on the Environment in Latin America, a Duke-UNC joint consortium. He is organizing the visit of two members of the Kallari Association who will speak to us. They will also be selling chocolate at the talk.

This talk is provided by CHICLE. Cultural presentations are usually (but not always) held at CHICLE on the second Sunday of each month, beginning at 5:00 pm. They are in English.

Create a Hummingbird Garden
If you would like to have hummingbirds around your landscape but do not want to invest the time into the maintenance of the feeders, install some new plants that will attract these amazing birds. To create a hummingbird paradise use a variety of plants such as annuals and perennials that have red nectar-rich flowers. Hummingbirds can actually see the color red so incorporate some into your garden. Orange and pink flowers can also be used to attract hummingbirds. Vines may be planted along fences and trellises, hanging baskets and window boxes can also be used to attract hummingbirds.

Some of the hummingbird favorites are: Bee Balm, Birds of Paradise, Butterfly Bush, Canna, Columbine, Coral Bell, Day Lily, Foxglove, Lantana, Salvia, Red Sage, Trumpet Vine, and many more. Remember do not use pesticides around humming bird gardens, the chemicals will limit the amount of insects used for food and will harm the hummingbirds.
