When I think back to my grammar school days, I remember recess, uncomfortable desks, and birthday parties. Recess is worth remembering because that was the time of day when you could cut loose and get dirty! Uncomfortable desks come to mind because no one should have to sit that long on a flat piece of wood. Last, but not least, I remember birthday parties for the yummy cupcakes that were served. Why did they always serve cupcakes? Well, because they come as an individual serving (no cutting or portioning required) and because of their portability factor (you can take them anywhere). If you stop to think about it, cupcakes are the economy car of the dessert world. Sure, it's small, but it does the job!

Cupcake Madness continued
Let's look at cupcakes a little more closely. They have a paper wrapper, they come in many flavors, and they have a long history. Cupcakes have been around since the 18th century. There are two theories on the name. One theory says the cupcake is named for the amount ingredients used in the recipe (cup of flour, cup of sugar, etc..). The second theory states that cupcakes were originally baked in cups (teacups to be exact). Both theories are found in old cookbooks and both make sense.

Now you are probably wondering, why all this talk about cupcakes? Well, the Weaver Street Market pastry bakers have been busy coming up with a few new flavors for this grammar school staple. Grown up? A little. Tasty? You bet!!

The Lemon Drop A delicious white cupcake filled with lemon curd and topped with smooth lemon buttercream. You will definitely pucker up for this one!

The PB & J A peanut butter cupcake filled with raspberry preserves and topped with yummy raspberry buttercream. Hey, no crust to cut off!

The Peppermint Patty A moist chocolate cupcake with mint buttercream on top dipped in chocolate ganache. Fresh breath never tasted so good!

Even with these refreshing new flavors we still have room in the case for the original Chocolate Cupcake, Carrot Cupcake, and Chai Cupcake. So, stop by the pastry counter and try one of our new cupcake flavors or pick up an old favorite today!

Mango Salsa
Serve mango salsa with grilled pork, fish, or poultry.

1 large mango, peeled, cut in 1/4-inch cube
1 peach or nectarine, pitted and chopped
3-4 tomatillas, remove papery cover, chop coarsely
1/2 medium red onion, finely chopped
1 jalapeno or seranno pepper, seeded and finely chopped, or to taste
2 Tbsp fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
2 Tbsp lime juice, or to taste
salt to taste

In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients. Mix well. Let stand at room temperature a half hour before serving or refrigerate up to 24 hours. This does not hold up well and should be used within the 24 hours.

Weaver Street Market loves to see people enjoying our lawn and connecting with their community. To keep this event a safe and fun place, we ask that you only bring friendly, well-behaved dogs on leashes and please clean up after them. We want the children who attend our event to have a safe and happy time too, so we ask that they not be allowed to climb the trees, including the Crepe Myrtles. Lastly, please enjoy the fountain from its perimeter. Thank you for your help in making this event safe and fun for everyone.

After Hours & the ALE Regulations

We know how much fun it is to sit on the lawn and drink some beers, but unfortunately North Carolina law forbids Weaver Street Market from selling six packs for consumption outside. You can buy beer by the glass outside at the tasting table, singles, or half-gallon Growlers from Carolina Brewery, but please—be kind to our cashiers and don't buy a six pack to take outside.

The Inter-Faith Council for Social Service is Cooking at After Hours this Week

The Inter-Faith Council for Social Service was created in the 1960s by local congregations to address basic needs such as hunger, homelessness, and health care for our area's impoverished members. With the support of more than 40 local religious groups, over 1000 volunteers, and the generosity of the wider Chapel Hill-Carrboro community, IFC runs a shelter, a kitchen serving more than 75,000 meals a year, provides counseling, child care, and training, offers medical clinics and transitional housing, and operates an emergency food pantry.

Totally Local Dinner

Wednesday, June 14, 5:30-9:30pm
Every summer, Panznella celebrates our fabulous local bounty with a series of Totally Local Dinners that showcase appetizers and entrées made with ingredients from within a 250 mile radius. Just to get you in the mood, here's a snippet of last year's menu: Using tomatoes from Eco Farm, Chef Peter created Chilled Sweet Tomato Soup. Guinea Hen Eggs from Bluebird Hill Farm nicely complemented a Brunswick Stew with Poached Guinea Hen Eggs, Smoked Trout on Hoppin' John featured trout from Carolina Hill. These were just a few of the appetizers; entrées featured heritage breed pork from Eliza Maclean made into BBQ, Beer-Battered Catfish, and Charleston Shrimp & Grits with catfish and shrimp from Fresh Catch Seafood. Papa Joe's fresh blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries made amazing desserts even better. Many other local farms provided fresh vegetables and greens for salads and sides.

Our menu this year will be just as diverse and tasty and you can enjoy your dinner knowing it's thousand of miles fresher, made with ingredients from around the corner. We do allow ourselves a few exotic imports: salt, pepper, sugar, vanilla, lemons, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar.

10% of restaurant sales benefit the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association. Dinner is served from 5:30-9:30. You choose from a range of appetizers, entrees, and desserts to create your very special Totally Local Dinner. Reservations are accepted for parties of six or more. Call 929-6626 to make a reservation. It should be a lively evening with plenty of things to taste and talk about.

Farm Dinner

Panzanella celebrates the abundance of delicious local food with our series of Farm Dinners. In addition to our full dinner menu, exciting dishes created with ingredients from the featured farm will be served.

Featuring Perry-Winkle Farm
June 29

Cathy Jones and Mike Perry have been farming Perry-Winkle Farm for about twenty years and are leaders in our local agricultural community. You'll find them at all the Farmers' Markets with an abundance of fresh, high-quality produce. Mike says they cull their produce heavily and bring only the premium pieces to market.

A variety of crops keep the farm productive throughout the entire growing season, starting with lettuce, greens, broccoli, and other cool-season-crops in the spring. Perry-Winkle's summer harvest includes okra, peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, beans, potatoes, squashes, cucumbers, herbs, and Cathy's stunning cut flowers.

Visit them at the Carrboro Farmers' Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the Southern Village Market on Thursdays. Cathy is a wealth of information and loves to share her knowledge and experience with customers.

Mark your calendar for our future Farm Dinners:
July 27 - Peregrine Farm
August 17 - Eco Farm
