by Peg Conway, WSM Wine Coordinator
I can't express the joy I felt when I first visited a North Carolina Winery. Seeing rows and rows of grape vines, full of their spring leaves and their first buds, made me giddy like a school girl. What did this winery have in store? I was more than excited to find out! I am here to tell you that North Carolina wineries have come a long way...for starters, there are almost triple the number of wineries today than there were five years ago. Production is up and so is quality. The more people making wine in this area means there are more resources for grape growers and winemakers than ever before, which, of course, equals better wine.

2nd Annual NC Wine Tour continued
There is no better venue for tasting wine than the actual land the grapes were grown on. Always wonder why that Chianti tasted so good IN Chianti? I'm telling you it's all in your surroundings. Hearing a winemaker talk about how difficult, or outstanding a particular vintage was, or what inspired them to plant, and produce a particular grape makes tasting that wine all the more enjoyable. So, now's your chance; for one day in August WSM is organizing our second North Carolina Wine Tour! Join us, Friday, August 25, 2006 on a chartered bus, and enjoy a day packed with winery tours, beautiful vistas, great people, and best of all - great North Carolina wines. I have picked each winery, and will personally guide you through our daylong tour.

For complete details check with our service desk at our Carrboro store. Tickets are $95 each and are extremely limited. Tickets go on sale July 19, so, don't miss out!

Recipe: Make-your-own Taco Seasoning
From Brendan Biggins, WSM Grocery Clerk
This recipe is great because it contains no MSG and you control the salt content!

2 Tbp Chili powder
1 Tbp paprika
1 1/2 Tbp cumin
1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 Tbp dried diced onion
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1 1/2 tsp corn starch
1 tsp dried cilantro
salt & pepper to taste

Brown 1 lb of ground beef, drain, add taco seasoning above (2 Tbp per one pound of meat) and a little water. If you use TVP, don't add any more water than it takes to re-hydrate it.

Check out the great selection of salsas, chips, and taco shells in Weaver Street Market's Grocery department.

After Hours Every Thursday!
On the Weaver Street Market lawn in Carrboro, 6-8 pm
After Hours is back and hotter than ever! Come prepared for picnicking, dancing, wine or beer tasting, and lots of fun! Local charitable groups will once again be providing freshly grilled picnic fare to purchase. Or choose from an expanded array of Hot Bar meals made daily in our very own kitchen.

Weaver Street Market loves to see people enjoying our lawn and connecting with their community. To keep this event a safe and fun place, we ask that you only bring friendly, well-behaved dogs on leashes and please clean up after them. We want the children who attend our event to have a safe and happy time too, so we ask that they not be allowed to climb the trees, including the Crepe Myrtles. Lastly, please enjoy the fountain from its perimeter. Thank you for your help in making this event safe and fun for everyone.

July 20 - The Tim Smith Band - original Jamaican style Ska & Reggae
July 27 - Carolina Caterwaulers - breakdowns, hoedowns & songs of the South
August 3 - The Tim Stambaugh Band - Bluegrass, Celtic, folk & traditional

After Hours & the ALE Regulations

We know how much fun it is to sit on the lawn and drink some beers, but unfortunately North Carolina law forbids Weaver Street Market from selling six packs for consumption outside. You can buy beer by the glass outside at the tasting table, singles, or half-gallon Growlers from Carolina Brewery, but please—be kind to our cashiers and don't buy a six pack to take outside.

The Piedmont Wildlife Center is Cooking at After Hours this Week

Piedmont Wildlife Center's mission is to support native North American wildlife and its habitat through rehabilitation, education, and research. The Center operates a wildlife rehabilitation hospital in Durham that accepts injured, sick or orphaned native wildlife 365 days a year. Through a grant from the NC Division of Public Health, we are participating in a wildlife surveillance program to identify diseases of local wildlife that may have an impact on human health. The Center also trains volunteers and offers education programs about wildlife conservation and wildlife issues to the public, youth groups and school groups and operates a summer day camp for ages 4-12. More information can be found on their website at www.piedmontwildlifecenter.org or by calling 968-8557.

SV Farmers' Market is in full swing! Win Prizes!
Every week there will be a drawing for prizes from Market Street Merchants. While you shop look for the box to enter your name for the drawing. The box will be located at a different vendor's booth each week. You don't have to be present to win. This week's prize is a $20 Gift Certificate to Market Street Books.

Shopping at the Farmers' Market is a great way to get to know the people who grow your food (they not only grow it but they are the ones selling it to you.) Feel free to ask them questions about how they raise their pigs or grow their tomatoes. Come join us every Thursday through August 31 on the Village Green. Rain or shine, we're there.
ChathamArts "Potluck in a Pasture" has Victorian Flair
Sunday, July 30, 6-8 pm
ChathamArts next Potluck in a Pasture invites guests to wear a favorite hat and something white and play croquet while meeting local artists and savoring delicious homemade dishes, all in view of the famous Celebrity goats. The beautiful rural setting is Celebrity Dairy near Siler City, owned by Fleming and Britt Pfann. The occasion celebrates the importance of Chatham County's artists and agriculture.

Visitors are asked to bring a potluck dish for eight that includes at least one locally grown ingredient (and the recipe to share stating the origins of its local ingredients), as well as a beverage, a lawn chair or blanket, and a $10 donation to ChathamArts, the non-profit county arts council that supports diverse arts and cultural programs throughout the year.

Local food ingredients for potluck contributions may come from your own backyard or neighboring farms. Local Farmers' Markets are at the Chatham County Fairgrounds (Thursdays), Fearrington Village (Tuesdays), Southern Village (Thursdays) and Carrboro (Wednesdays and Saturdays), or from Weaver Street Market in Southern Village and Carrboro, and the new Chatham Marketplace in Pittsboro.

Music, art, and a modified wine tasting by Horizon Cellars of Siler City will also be offered. The July supper will support Chatham County teachers who wish to invite an artist for a class workshop or to use an arts project to help teach their curriculum.

The potluck series will continue on Sept 17 with a rescheduled Potluck at Perry-winkle Farm. For directions and additional information, visit the ChathamArts website.

Farm Dinner: Peregrine Farm, Thursday, July 27

Panzanella celebrates the abundance of delicious local food with our series of Farm Dinners. In addition to our full dinner menu, exciting dishes created with ingredients from the featured farm will be served.

Our next Farm Dinner is Thursday, July 27, and features Peregrine Farm! Peregrine Farm Began 23 years ago as a pick-your-own-berry farm, but quickly evolved into a vegetable farm when Betsy began working full time there in 1983. In 1987 Betsy turned to flower production with "about 100 feet of zinnias and about 25 globe amaranth."

Alex joined the farm full-time in 1990 after running a painting business for 7 years. "It became apparent that we needed a division of labor," says Betsy, and she began to focus on cut flower production as Alex took over most of the vegetable production. Alex currently grows over 20 kinds of vegetables and fruits including heirloom tomatoes, specialty peppers, lettuce, blueberries, collards, leeks, Easter Egg radishes, Brussels sprouts, turnips, beets, cucumbers, carrots, and spinach. This Farm Dinner will feature heirloom tomatoes and specialty peppers.
