Counter Culture continued
As coffee drinkers, you are an integral part of that relationship, and they want to communicate the unique characteristics of each coffee to you. Take a moment when you're in the Coffee Department to read the bin signs, which detail each coffee's origin certifications, growing conditions, processing techniques and nuances of flavor. Signs are updated each year, and sometimes selections are changed seasonally - coffee is as seasonal as produce and they try to offer each coffee at the peak of its flavor.

If you're interested in learning more about Counter Culture Coffee and their coffees, check out their website. And if you want to drink and talk coffee, visit their Durham roasting facility at 10:00 am any Friday for a coffee cupping! Friday, August 11, 5-8 pm

Favorite Local Dude: John Soehner, Eco Farm
By Wendy Hayes, WSM Assistant Produce Manager
Hello, everyone! Long time no write. I just wanted to take a moment to brag about one of my favorite local dudes. We love our local producers, but this man goes above and beyond in my book. I know y'all have been gorging yourselves on his tomatoes (and basil), because I don't think we've ever sold tomatoes as fast as we have this year! Sometimes, they come straight off the vine and onto the shelf—and occasionally he even stocks them himself. Of course, the man I'm speaking of is John Soehner, who runs Eco Farm. Since he lives so close by, he calls me every day to see what we need, insuring the freshest richest tomatoes I have ever eaten in my life. As sad as it may be, he just told me the supplies are dwindling, so hopefully, you can get your hands on a few cups of sungolds before they are gone, and make this crowd pleaser (see recipe below)...back by popular demand...oh—and go to his Farm Dinner at Panzanella, Thursday, August 17—and thank him!!!!

Shiloh's Creamy Sungold Pasta

One day, I went into what I thought was the produce office, but it smelled like an Italian restaurant!! After many exclamations, I discovered it was Shiloh's lunch. The smell was intoxicating enough, but one tiny bite won me over; and bless her heart, she recited the recipe to me on the spot—what a gal! Well, I've made it many times now and so should you, so hop to it! This one is guaranteed to impress.

You'll need:
3 cups sungold tomatoes cut in half
1/2 cup fresh basil - packed
2 Tbs. butter
6-8 cloves of garlic, minced or put through a press
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2/3 cup heavy cream (I like Mapleview)
one hunk of Romano cheese (Parmesan will work, but the Romano adds a saltier kick)
pasta of choice (I like fettucini the best.)
Optional: peeled shrimp!

Heat your pan (I use the stainless one for this delicate recipe) and sauté the garlic in butter, being careful not to burn it. Add salt, pepper, and halved tomatoes and wilt 'em down a few minutes. It will smell pretty good at this point. Add cream and cook gently, allowing the sauce to thicken. When it's to your liking, add peeled shrimp directly to the simmering cream sauce—they'll cook pretty darn fast, do wait until the end...then chop your basil and throw it in. This is perfectly delicious without the shrimp, but incredibly decadent with them. Hopefully you've cooked your pasta while this was all going on, so just plate it up and smother with sauce. Serve with the freshly grated cheese on the side, so it doesn't get wasted on the sides and bottom of the pan. Now say a little thanks to the local producers and ENJOY!!!

If you only have a few sungolds, mix in some of the pinks, reds or whatever, as long as it's local, ripe, and juicy. Love, wendy

After Hours Every Thursday!

Weaver Street Market loves to see people enjoying our lawn and connecting with their community. To keep this event a safe and fun place, we ask that you only bring friendly, well-behaved dogs on leashes and please clean up after them. We want the children who attend our event to have a safe and happy time too, so we ask that they not be allowed to climb the trees, including the Crepe Myrtles. Lastly, please enjoy the fountain from its perimeter. Thank you for your help in making this event safe and fun for everyone.

After Hours & the ALE Regulations

We know how much fun it is to sit on the lawn and drink some beers, but unfortunately North Carolina law forbids Weaver Street Market from selling six packs for consumption outside. You can buy beer by the glass outside at the tasting table, singles, or half-gallon Growlers from Carolina Brewery, but please—be kind to our cashiers and don't buy a six pack to take outside.

The Youth Creating Change is Cooking at After Hours this week.

Youth Creating Change is made up of students working together to promote positive changes on their campuses and in our community. They use research based information to challenge common misperceptions. They promote the fact that most students don't drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes or use other illegal drugs. They coordinate and host activities at school and in the community that support students. Get to know Youth Creating Change at After Hours this Thursday.

The Cooperative Community Fund
Introducing the Cooperative Community Fund

As you know, Weaver Street Market already gives back to the community in many ways - now we'd like to introduce the Cooperative Community Fund (CCF) as a long-term means for the co-op to give to local organizations.

Weaver Street Market's Cooperative Community Fund is established as a permanent fund whose interest will be given annually to local groups working on issues relating to sustainable agriculture and organic food, hunger and social issues, environmental protection, and cooperatives. We expect that the CCF will grow rapidly to become a major factor in the achievement of our co-op's mission to be a vibrant, sustainable commercial center.

Join us in supporting this Fund by coming to Weaver Street Market's 2006 Fall Wine Shows! In the past, these events have been rousing, rollicking successes, and now proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to the CCF. What a perfect way to help a good cause and enjoy yourself by tasting new wine!

Small Grant Opportunity for Local Non-Profits

Local groups working on issues relating to: 1) sustainable agriculture and organic food, 2) hunger and social issues, 3) environmental protection, or 4) cooperatives are eligible to apply for a grant from Weaver Street Market's Cooperative Community Fund. Eligible organizations must be certified non-profit and be working in Orange or Chatham County, NC. Recipients will be chosen by a volunteer committee of worker- and consumer-owners of Weaver Street Market, and will be featured in Weaver Street Market's Annual Report in mid October.

Detailed information and applications are available at www.weaverstreetmarket.coop/action. The deadline for applications is September 5, 2006 at 9:00 pm.

Volunteer Opportunity for Weaver Street Market Owners

Weaver Street Market is looking for a small group of committed volunteers to meet a few times this fall to select the recipients of this year's Cooperative Community Fund grants. In order to volunteer, one must be: an owner of the co-op in good standing, able to work as part of a consensus-building team, able to attend all meetings, and not be affiliated with a non-profit applying for a grant.

The meetings will be held in Carrboro from 6:00-7:30 pm on Wednesdays, September 6, 13, and 20 with dinner provided in exchange for volunteer time. Committee members are also requested to attend the Annual Meeting on November 5 from 12:00-3:00 pm.

Please contact Christy Raulli at christy@weaverstreetmarket.coop or 913-1588 if you have questions or are interested in serving on this committee.

North Carolina Wine Dinner!

The Best of North Carolina Wines
Monday, August 14
7pm - 9:30pm

Peg Conway, our Wine Coordinator will present North Carolina wines from select wineries. Peg regularly disappears for days on end to visit North Carolina wineries. She's excited to share her experiences with you, through a tasting tour of some of the best wines our state has to offer. From terrific Italian varietals to classic French style wines to intriguing new world blends. Think all fruit wine is sticky sweet? Think again. We'll (hopefully) change the way you think of North Carolina wines. We are truly proud of what tasty viniferous delights our great state has to offer. So join us August 14, for a tasty tour of our states wines and enjoy plenty of delicious food from Panzanella's kitchen.

The cost of this event is $40/person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella or the Customer Service Desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.

Farm Dinner: Eco Farm!

Thursday, August 17, 5:30-9:00 pm
Nestled back in the trees of Orange County, Cindy and John Soehner are working hard to create a farm out of a tangle of North Carolina woods. Eco Farm consists of twenty-three acres set in a lush pocket where the weeds grow as vigorously as the flowers and the vegetables. Like many of our small local farmers growing the organic way, they do most of the work by hand without tractors, spreaders and other large equipment. They are fortunate that the soil is rich and fertile with good drainage, and that they have a deep well and ponds for irrigation to get them through periodic droughts. John is also grateful to the unknown farmer who once tilled his land. "There's not a rock out there," he says with a smile.

Cindy and John will grow anything that people want to buy, and they have become known for their arugula at the Farmers' Market. Their spicy mesclun salad mix makes eating salad fun again. Toss in a few tiny Sungold tomatoes and you have a great treat. Basil, eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and more crowd the rows that stretch out in the sun on Eco Farm.

Finding fresh goodies from Eco Farm is easy. They sell at all the local markets, Carrboro on Wednesday and Saturday, Fearrington on Tuesday and Southern Village on Thursday. You've probably eaten John s greens at a number of local restaurants and many of you know Cindy from her years behind the bakery counter at Weaver Street Market. Now you'll have another chance to enjoy their produce at Panzanella's Farm Dinner.
