Committed to Fair Trade: Equal Exchange Coffee! As part of our month long Celebration of Local Food and Wine, Weaver Street Market is highlighting our local coffee companies. This week we look at Equal Exchange - Equal Exchange is the worker-owned co-opand 100% Fair Trade coffee roasterwho helped pioneer the Fair Trade model with coffee farmers in the late 1980s. Today they're still working with food co-ops around the nation to expand an alternative food system that brings a variety of high quality, organic coffee, tea, cocoa and chocolate from small farmer co-ops around the world. The mission of Equal Exchange is unorthodox for a business, but will probably resonate with the worker and consumer members of Weaver Street Market. More |

Specifically it is. . ."to build long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sound, to foster mutually beneficial relationships between farmers and consumers and to demonstrate, through our success, the contribution of worker co-operatives and Fair Trade to a more equitable, democratic and sustainable world." After 20 years they're making some good progress. For example, organic Fair Trade Certified™ coffee is now imported from more than 20 farmer co-ops in 9 countries. They also facilitate more than a $1,000,000 in affordable credit to farmer partners every year. Lastly, they enjoy working with Weaver Street Market in re-connecting people with the farmers who grow the good food that we all enjoy and depend upon. |

On the Weaver Street Market lawn in Carrboro, 6-8 pmAfter Hours is back and hotter than ever! Come prepared for picnicking, dancing, wine or beer tasting, and lots of fun! Local charitable groups will once again be providing freshly grilled picnic fare to purchase. Or choose from an expanded array of Hot Bar meals made daily in our very own kitchen. Weaver Street Market loves to see people enjoying our lawn and connecting with their community. To keep this event a safe and fun place, we ask that you only bring friendly, well-behaved dogs on leashes and please clean up after them. We want the children who attend our event to have a safe and happy time too, so we ask that they not be allowed to climb the trees, including the Crepe Myrtles. Lastly, please enjoy the fountain from its perimeter. Thank you for your help in making this event safe and fun for everyone. August 17 - JAAFAR - Middle Eastern Jazz August 24 - Singularity with guest Jim Beckwith - 20th Century set featuring music from the 20s to 2000 August 31 - The Hushpuppies - Tasty old-time songs and tunes from the Piedmont of NC After Hours & the ALE Regulations We know how much fun it is to sit on the lawn and drink some beers, but unfortunately North Carolina law forbids Weaver Street Market from selling six packs for consumption outside. | Battery Recycling |
Batteries make our lives so much easier and fun: cell phones, laptops, cameras, flashlights, portable CD players and more. But when the batteries wear out and are thrown away, they can become hazardous to our environment, contributing to heavy metals and lead in our land and water. Taking batteries to a recycling center is a good way to ensure that they are disposed of properly.
Weaver Street Market has partnered with Orange County Solid Waste Management to help reduce the number of batteries going to the landfill. You can recycle dry cell batteries such as those from hearing aids, cell phones, cordless phones, cameras, power tools, flashlights, toys, and other battery-operated or rechargeable devices at Weaver Street Market. Look for the bright blue plastic tub on the shelf at the front of the store at both our Carrboro location and our Southern Village location. Orange County residents can bring any type of battery to any of the six Orange County Solid Waste Convenience Centers for recycling. The Convenience Centers also accept lead-acid batteries such as those used for autos, boats, motorcycles, and lawnmowers. In addition to accepting batteries at the Solid Waste Convenience Centers, all batteries are accepted at the Orange County Household Hazardous Waste Collections. |
| Local Farmers Honored |
Alex and Betsy Hitt of Peregrine Farm have been awarded the Patrick Madden Award for Sustainable Agriculture. The award is presented by the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, the USDA's effort to make agriculture more sustainable. "This award recognizes producers who have explored ways to make farming more profitable, environmentally sound and good for communities, and have served as effective educators".Alex and Betsy are always amazed when anyone recognizes them for what they consider everyday farm work and the outreach they do to anyone who has questions. Alex and Betsy will fly to Wisconsin to accept the award and they will be interviewed on NPR's All Things Considered with Melissa Block on Wednesday, August 16 in the afternoon. |
