Heritage Turkey Dinner this Thursday It's time to feast on a very special Thanksgiving Dinner. On Thursday November 2, Panzanella will host its fourth annual "Heritage Turkey" Dinner, co-sponsored by Slow Food, USA. Three things make this turkey dinner special. The first thing is the turkey. The menu will feature a kind of turkey that was common in America before the commercial turkey was developed for mass production. Secondly, this dinner is a fundraiser for the American Livestock Breed Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving heritage poultry, cattle, sheep, and other breeds. Lastly, a dinner like this provides a market to local producers who raise heritage turkeys to supplement their income in the off-season, like Alex and Betsy Hitt of Peregrine Farm who recently won the 2006 Patrick Madden Award for Sustainable Agriculture. Alex and Betsy have raised a flock of Bourbon Reds, a heritage breed that was more common forty or fifty years ago before the large-scale commercialization of food production took place. Raising heritage turkeys is just one aspect of their innovative farm that has pioneered a new breed of small, sustainable farms. Alex and Betsy have been leaders in creating small, sustainable agriculture with an additional focus on the social aspect of food production: who's growing it and who's going to eat it.
The American Livestock Breed Conservancy was formed in the seventies in response to the dwindling number of heritage animals available for breeding. They educate people about the need to retain a diverse genetic bank for the future. The ALBC therefore encourages farmers and individuals to keep small flocks of heritage breeds, but the best method of ensuring a large healthy pool is having a market for the animals. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. Reservations are accepted for groups of six or more. | |
