The Wellness Department has gone all-out this year sourcing wonderful Holiday Gift ideas that are fairly traded. Each week we'll feature one of these fabulous companies that are working to help communities around the globe to receive a fair price for their goods. This week we look at Andes Gifts. Our ever popular alpaca hats, gloves, scarves and ponchos come from Andes Gifts. This company focuses on helping fabric artists in Bolivia create a stable economy in their country. Fair Trade ensures that these producers make a living above the national standard. Communities use this much needed capital to provide better education and health care. Working directly with the producers enables them to learn business skills. Buying fairly traded goods is one way to ensure that your contribution will make a difference in the lives of artists and producers in other countries. More

High Quality Alpaca Accesories. The fabric artists of Bolivia have been working with alpaca for centuries. The animals are easy to care for and have a low impact on the environment. Alpaca wool is lighter, stronger and softer than sheep's wool. Choose it for its beauty or for its gentle touch on your skin. Look for gloves, scarves, hats, and ponchos in our Wellness department in a variety of colors and styles.

Hope for the Holidays
When you shop at Weaver Street Market this holiday season, you'll once again have the chance to buy great gifts that also give back to our community. Hope for the Holidays Fund is back again after five successful seasons, and we're excited about the three local organizations we've chosen to be the recipients of this season's funds generated by special Hope for the Holiday sales. This season's organizations are Child Care Services Association, the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service and WSM's Cooperative Community Fund.

How it works
You make an automatic donation to the Hope for the Holidays Fund by buying specially marked gift items located throughout the store. Part of the purchase price of each gift marked with a special Hope for the Holidays sign will be collected in the Hope for the Holidays Fund. You are also encouraged to drop donations into the collection jars located near the cash registers.

Hope for the Holidays
The Inter-Faith Council for Social Service (IFC) was created in the 1960s by local congregations to address basic needs such as hunger, shelter, and health care for our area's impoverished citizens. With the support of more than 40 local religious groups, over 1000 volunteers, and the on-going generosity of the wider Chapel Hill-Carrboro community, IFC operates a homeless shelter, a kitchen serving more than 75,000 meals a year and an Emergency Food Pantry, provides counseling, child care, and training, and offers medical clinics and transitional housing.

This year, the Inter-Faith Council is eligible for an All-Or-Nothing Challenge Grant provided by The Stewards Fund. This Challenge Grant will match a minimum fund-raising effort of $1,500 by the IFC. Weaver Street Market has, therefore, selected the IFC to be one of its award recipients for the Hope for the Holidays Fund. Your Hope for the Holidays Fund contributions will help us help IFC "earn" this Challenge Grant. The funds will support the IFC Crisis Intervention Program Expansion with expanded staff hours for direct support and programming, an increased Crisis Fund, and additional Food Pantry supplies. The IFC fights the growing threat of homelessness to the citizens of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Orange County. Your investment in the IFC is an investment in a stronger, more productive, and more compassionate community. Weaver Street Market challenges you, through your purchases of Hope for the Holidays Fund items, to help us help the Inter-Faith Council reach its goal of receiving this year's All-Or-Nothing Challenge Grant.

Christmas Tree Care
By Kris Brannan, Floral Specialist
When purchasing a cut Christmas tree you want to be sure it is fresh. Needles should not be falling off the tree when you gently stroke the branches. The appearance should be green with no browning. It is a good idea to lift the tree several inches and drop it onto the base and if a lot of needles fall then it is not a fresh tree. Once arriving home with a tree cut off ¼ to ½ inch disc from the base to allow the tree to absorb water. The tree will probably absorb about a gallon of water the first day. It is important to keep your tree watered throughout the time it is inside or it will dry out and become a fire hazard.

If you are purchasing a balled and burlapped live tree you need to condition the tree by leaving it in an unheated room or garage for a couple of days before bringing it into a heated room. These trees won't need as much water as cut trees; however, they need special care. The tree should not be inside more than 10 days or it may break dormancy and start to grow. Also, keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Before moving the tree outside it should be reconditioned by letting it sit in the garage or unheated area for a couple of days. If for some reason the tree cannot be planted immediately, place it in a sheltered area and heavily mulch the root ball.

January Wine Dinner

Wines of the Rhône Valley
January 15, 2007
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Join us Monday, January 15 for a tasting tour of France's Rhône Valley. The Rhône Valley has two very distinct sub regions, the Northern and the Southern Rhône. The northern region produces the most prestigious and most complex Syrah and Viognier in the world from the towns of Condrieu, Cornas and Côte Rôtie. Head south and you'll find spicy, peppery reds from Gigondas and Vacqeyras, and aromatic, elegant whites and reds from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Rhône is a diverse, exciting wine producing region, with the most well known wines produced being Côtes-du-Rhône. This term can be used for wines produced in the entire Rhône region and range widely in quality and style. Each of the smaller towns and designations has very distinct styles and terroir, so each wine has a different personality from the next. Join us for this tasting tour of the Rhône valley and see what this diverse region has to offer.

The cost of this event is $40 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.
