Immaculate Baking Company - Edible Art Box
by Elizabeth Friend, WSM Cheese Enthusiast
As part of our annual Hope For The Holidays fundraising program, we're featuring Immaculate Baking Company's Edible Art Box, a hands-on cookie baking kit that's loads of fun for folks of any age. When you buy a Hope For The Holidays item, you are making a contribution that benefits multiple local charities. In addition, Immaculate Baking Company donates a portion of its cookie sales to help support the Folk Artist's Foundation and to fulfill the programs of its Soul Food Fund which promotes unbridled creativity through innovative 'artreach' programs.

The Edible Art Box is a great way to introduce kids of all ages to the wonderful world of folk art. The kit features Immaculate's Sweet Vanilla Sugar cookie dough and cookie cutters designed from the work of Southern folk artists. (My personal favorite is the penguin based on the work of Clyde Jones, a Bynum artist renowned for his chainsaw sculptures). The all-natural sugar sprinkles are colored with ingredients like beet juice and annatto, so there's no scary artificial food coloring. They've even included a coloring booklet of folk art designs for while you're waiting for your scrumptious cookies to bake!

We will be sampling Immaculate Baking Cookies this week:

Friday, December 15, 4-7 pm in our Southern Village store.
Saturday, December 16, 11-2 pm in our Carrboro Store.

On the Street
From the WSM Board of Directors
One of the greatest advantages that Weaver Street Market enjoys is the fact that it is community-owned. We are not beholden to far-away stockholders and corporate investors—we are accountable only to each other and our mutual interests.

To that end, on behalf of our Board of Directors, I would like to thank all of our owners who participated in last month's Annual Owners' Meeting. It was a valuable opportunity to ask questions, answer questions, and exchange ideas. Many of the concerns and ideas that relate directly to the management of our businesses are being passed on to the appropriate managers. However, many other concerns and ideas raised relate to the governance of the cooperative—this is the business of your Board of Directors.

The Board is currently in the process of reviewing the input from the Annual Meeting. Important ideas and concerns are being added to our calendar of policy reviews and other discussions for the coming year. One of the most important themes to emerge from the Meeting is the desire for more such opportunities to meet with the co-op leadership and exchange ideas and values. In the past few months the Board has committed itself to improving its linkage with the ownership. We are currently exploring ways to create new opportunities for connection in the coming year: be sure to keep an eye on the website and watch for in-store postings.

Another theme that was evident from our various discussions is concern about our upcoming expansions. Owners want to be sure that Weaver Street Market stays true to its expressed values during the expansions, and that the values that guide growth into new areas are balanced against preservation and enhancement of the currently existing businesses. Other themes to be discussed by the board in the near future include new ways to define and communicate our established Weaver Street Market food standards, and new ways in which the cooperative can build an inclusive community.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make an informative and successful Annual Meeting!

Jacob Myers,
Chairperson,
Weaver Street Market Board of Directors

Weaver Street Market's Cooperative Community Fund
Weaver Street Market's Cooperative Community Fund (CCF) is a permanent fund whose interest will be given annually to local groups working on issues relating to sustainable agriculture and organic food, hunger, and social issues, environmental protection, and cooperatives. This year marks the first year that Weaver Street Market dispersed funds to local organizations. This past November the following organizations each received $500: Pa'lante, Anathoth Community Garden, and the Orange Community Housing and Land Trust. With your Hope for the Holiday contributions, we expect that the CCF will grow rapidly to become a major factor in the achievement of Weaver Street Market's mission to be a vibrant, sustainable commercial center.
Poinsettia Care
By Kris Brannan, Floral Specialist
Once you bring home that beautiful Poinsettia for the Holiday season there are a few things you should know. It likes to have at least six hours of indirect sunlight, but if placing in a window do not let the leaves touch the cold glass. Also avoid drafts and fluctuating temperatures. The ideal temperatures are from 65 degrees to 75 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night.

It is best to water your plant when the soil is dry. Water until it runs out of the pot into the saucer. You must remove water from the saucer immediately so root injury does not occur.

January Wine Dinner

Wines of the Rhône Valley
January 15, 2007
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Join us Monday, January 15 for a tasting tour of France's Rhône Valley. The Rhône Valley has two very distinct sub regions, the Northern and the Southern Rhône. The northern region produces the most prestigious and most complex Syrah and Viognier in the world from the towns of Condrieu, Cornas and Côte Rôtie. Head south and you'll find spicy, peppery reds from Gigondas and Vacqeyras, and aromatic, elegant whites and reds from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Rhône is a diverse, exciting wine producing region, with the most well known wines produced being Côtes-du-Rhône. This term can be used for wines produced in the entire Rhône region and range widely in quality and style. Each of the smaller towns and designations has very distinct styles and terroir, so each wine has a different personality from the next. Join us for this tasting tour of the Rhône valley and see what this diverse region has to offer.

The cost of this event is $40 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.
