Montalto Olive Oil - This Extra Virgin Olive Oil is imported from Sicily, Italy.

La Piana Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is made from the juice of the Trebbiano and Lambrusco grapes that are cultivated in the area surrounding Modena, Italy. Infused wine vinegars are great for perking up grilled vegetables and seafood, for use in a salad dressing or in a marinade for meats.

We will be sampling both of these products this week: Friday, December 22, 5-8 pm in our Southern Village store. Saturday, December 23, 11-2 pm in our Carrboro Store.
Unique Batik
Another of our Fair Trade partners is Unique Batik. They work with batik artists, sewers, and beaders in Ghana and weavers, sewers and beaders in Guatemala. Their goal is to bring fun and functional active wear and accessories to the international marketplace. Fairly traded goods allow these artisans to earn a living, and stay in the villages where they have family and cultural roots.

Weaver Street Market carries a variety of their bags in our Wellness Department. Look for woven messenger bags, small coin purses, and little shoulder bags.

Holiday Entertaining
We can help with all your holiday gatherings! Create a fun and festive get together with a selection of our special orders: Vegetables & Dip, Hummus & Pita, Stuffed Mushrooms, Cheese & Fruit, Spanakopita, Hot Wings or Sushi.

A quick and easy way to make an occasion special or to dress up a holiday dinner is to serve a cheese plate. It can be presented as appetizer or dessert, and it is easy. Here are some suggestions:
Keep it simple: 3 to 5 cheeses is all you need. A few ounces per guest will be enough, especially if there is bread and/or crackers alongside.
Have a theme: You can stick with one country (or state) of origin, type of milk, or type of cheese. such as a range of blues, mild to strong.
Provide companions: olives, nuts, fruit or interesting condiments like chutney or fruit pastes can be good companions.
Bring cheese to room temperature to serve.
For ripe brie-types, this means arranging your cheese on the serving dish an hour before it will be eaten. Loosely drape plastic wrap or wax paper over the cheese to prevent drying out.
Try some combinations. Go with what you like and don't be afraid to to try unusal combinations. Some interesting varities are:
Vermont Sharp, parrano, and aged gouda with pickles and mango chutney.
Manchego, Chapel Hill Creamery New Moon and Pecorino Toscano with quince paste.
Jarlsberg, gruyere and Meadow Creek Appalachian with good beer.

We will be happy to give you samples at the cheese counter to help with your selections.
A Winter's Ale!
By Jason Cole, WSM Beer Specialist
As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, it's time to start reaching for those rich and tasty winter beers to help celebrate the season. Holiday beers and "winter warmers" have been a tradition for centuries. In Europe, the traditional wassail dates back as far as Medieval times. Wassail is a heated drink containing a mixture of beer, cider, wine, spices, fruits, and sometimes liquor. In the abbey, monks would make a special beer for themselves to celebrate Christmas. Usually these beers would be stronger and richer than their normal beer.

These old traditions are alive and well today. While there is no set of guidelines for a winter beer, they usually follow a general pattern of higher alcohol content, the use of darker malts, and some use of spices. In the U.S., Anchor Brewery has been making "Our Special Ale" for more than thirty years. This year's brew offers tastes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and roasted barley all with a touch of anise. For another smooth brew, try Sam Smith's Winter Welcome. This copper colored ale has a sweet nutty flavor balanced with a wonderful hop bitterness. Sierra Nevada is a hoppier winter beer with spicy spruce and pine flavors. Our local Carolina Brewery has its own "Santa's Secret." Brewer Jon Connolly has created a rich amber colored beer with allspice, cinnamon, orange, and coriander.

As winter approaches, these beers are perfect for celebrating, staying warm, and sharing stories with friends. Enjoy these gems before they're gone, or you may be left out in the cold.

Keep the Home Guys Going
How many shopping days are left? As the pressure mounts to fill your list of Christmas wishes, take a moment to stop and think about the impact of the money you will spend this Holiday season. Through your spending you have the power to affect many lives. When you choose to buy from a locally-owned business, your money works for you and your community.

Locally-owned businesses support other smaller businesses such as accountants, architects, computer techs, lawyers and designers. They can offer a wider selection of independently-made items or goods made by small local producers. Chain stores frequently import building designs, graphics and advertising from other locations. Payroll, taxes, and other administrative tasks are shipped out to a headquarters far away. Not to mention the pure profit dollars that simply flow out of your community, leaving behind an absentee-owned business that does not care how their actions impact your area. A locally-owned business is more likely to stay during up times and down, and to work with the needs of the community. Large chains can hold a town hostage by threatening to leave if not given what they want by officials.

Unique items offered by specialty shops add to the flavor and distinction of a town's character. Independent businesses can afford to choose products that appeal to their locale. They are often the only outlets for those special, locally- made, or hard-to-find items that can range from soaps and candles to radical books and music. So this Christmas, and the rest of the year, resist the urge to spend your dollars at the large out-of-town chain stores. Support the local guy, your neighbor, and preserve the individuality and economic health of your town.

January Wine Dinner

Wines of the Rhône Valley
January 15, 2007
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Join us Monday, January 15 for a tasting tour of France's Rhône Valley. The Rhône Valley has two very distinct sub regions, the Northern and the Southern Rhône. The northern region produces the most prestigious and most complex Syrah and Viognier in the world from the towns of Condrieu, Cornas and Côte Rôtie. Head south and you'll find spicy, peppery reds from Gigondas and Vacqeyras, and aromatic, elegant whites and reds from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Rhône is a diverse, exciting wine producing region, with the most well known wines produced being Côtes-du-Rhône. This term can be used for wines produced in the entire Rhône region and range widely in quality and style. Each of the smaller towns and designations has very distinct styles and terroir, so each wine has a different personality from the next. Join us for this tasting tour of the Rhône valley and see what this diverse region has to offer.

The cost of this event is $40 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.
