on WSM in Hillsborough!

If you drive north on Churton Street into downtown Hillsborough and look to the left, you'll notice that construction has started on our new Hillsborough store. The store will occupy the entire first floor of a three-story brick building called the Gateway Center. Above the store will be two floors of Orange County offices. Our Hillsborough store will be almost the same size as our Carrboro store and will include the same grocery selection and popular deli and bakery offerings, as well as a café. There will be a small lawn on the south side of the building that will serve as a community gathering and event space. More

On the Street
Construction Starts continued
A new traffic light will make it easy to get in and out of a 70-space lot dedicated to Weaver Street Market shoppers. We expect the store to open in early 2008—about a year from now.

Next door to our new Hillsborough store, the County is planning a new library and office complex on the former Southern States property. This will allow the County to keep all its major offices in downtown Hillsborough. Our new store, along with this new County complex, and the adjoining Riverwalk will bring a hub of activity to downtown Hillsborough. We are excited to be part of a great cooperative effort to bring all of these projects to fruition.

We are swapping the Southern States property in exchange for ownership of the first floor of the Gateway Center. This will be the first time we have owned one of our stores, so we are able to include many green building features. Waste heat from the refrigeration system will be used to heat the building in the winter time, in addition to pre-heating the hot water. Gray water from the sinks will be used for flushing the toilets. And a storm water cistern under the parking lot will be used to irrigate the landscaping.

We have had a great response to our new owner drive for the Hillsborough store, selling over 300 new ownership and founding shares. Along with our existing owners this gives us 594 Weaver Street Market owners that live in Hillsborough and central to northern Orange County. In addition, many owners have volunteered to make loans to help finance the store, and we are counting on these loans to help us purchase the building.

In the future check our website at weaverstreetmarket.coop for pictures of the construction and the floor plan for our new Hillsborough Store.

On the Street
Meet the WSM Board!
A seven-member Board of Directors governs Weaver Street Market. The Board is directly accountable to the consumer and worker owners for the activities and accomplishments of the cooperative. Specifically, it is responsible for:
—Interacting with the owners - to understand their values and vision
—Developing and revising a set of policies that guide the General Manager in achieving goals that are consistent with the owner's values and vision
—Monitoring the General Manager's achievement of these goals
This past fall, the Board welcomed two new members, Tam Fetters and Robert Short. By way of introduction, the whole Board briefly responded to the following questions: 1) Tell us a little about your self, 2) How can WSM best position itself to accomplish our mission into the future?, and 3) What is your favorite food?

Incidentally, the Board meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 6:30-9:30pm, and they just love it when owners come by to observe. If you let them know that you're coming ahead of time, they'll get you an agenda, background materials and feed you, too! To confirm an upcoming meeting, please click here for the events calendar, and to let the Board know that you're planning to attend, contact them at board@weaverstreetmarket.coop.

February Wine Dinner

Wines of South Africa
Monday, February 19
7pm - 9:30 pm

Join us for our first ever South African wine dinner. Don't know much about this interesting wine growing region? Then now is your chance. South Africa ranks as the world's seventh largest wine producer. In 1652 wine was pressed for the first time from grapes grown on South Africa's cape. Its wine history dates back over 300 years but its reputation for making good, solid wines is fairly new. During the 1980s anti-apartheid sanctions excluded Cape wines from most foreign markets. South African wine paid a dear price, but as sanctions were lifted in the early 1990s the industry found itself more competitive at the bottom end of the market than at the top. Denied the rigors and rewards of international competition for so long, the Cape wine industry is now springing to catch up with "new world" excellence, innovation and aggressive marketing. You can expect an interesting mix of old-world AND new world styles in these unique wines from South Africa's famous Cape. We welcome Olivier Lotterie from Vineyard Brands Imports to guide us on a tasting tour of this exciting wine producing region.

The cost of this event is $40 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.
