In case you didn't know it, St. Patrick's Day is this month. That means people will be seeing green, eating green, and wearing green. For the people of Weaver Street Market it means seeing gold, eating gold and wearing crumbs. That's right; Irish Oat Scones are back, those sweet, golden, crumbly, current laden bits of pleasure. Enjoy these goodies every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday thru the month of March. This year it also means Bailey's Irish Cream Cheese Cake. A creamy mixture of rich cream cheese and Baileys Irish Cream Liquor, Irish whiskey and a rich chocolate cookie crumb crust. If this doesn't get your Irish up, nothing will. Also, try our Chocolate Orange Guinness Pound Cake. Nothing more needs to be said here. So all this month look for the your old favorites and don't forget to try something new. There just might be a pot of gold at the pastry case!

St. Patrick's Day Specials! continued
Get your Irish on at the Cheese counter where they have all things Irish with three delicious Irish Cheeses: Ardrahan - Ardrahan is a handmade cheese produced by traditional methods in Kanturk, County Cork. Mary Burns and her son Eugene use only their cows' whole milk and vegetarian rennet to make this golden colored full flavored cheese. Ardrahan is semi-soft, so easy to serve with bread or crackers for an interesting appetizer. Thin slices atop roasted potatoes, melted under the broiler would also make a tasty, comforting Irish-style side dish. Cashel Blue - Cashel Blue is the artisanal creation of Jane and Louis Grubb. This is a stunning blue cheese, produced by a single family on a single farm in Tipperary. This cheese is also suitable for vegetarians, and combines flavors of sharp, salty and creamy. If you are looking for a special cheese for an after dinner treat, or a delicious companion to port, this is it! Dubliner - Dubliner is a year-round favorite because of its pleasing crunch of calcium crystals that are a product of the aging process. Sharp from 2 years of ripening, salty like a parmesan, melts like a cheddar. You know it, you love it, and this month it is at a special price.

Pair your Irish Dubliner with Weaver Street Market's famous Irish Soda Bread. But get it quick; it disappears like the rainbow on March 17th!

Top off your Irish celebration with Smithwick's Irish Ale! Ireland's oldest ale boasts the malty, smooth flavor of a classic Irish ale.

Bedding Plants are here!
Spring is upon us, and it is almost time to plant those cool season bedding plants. Weaver Street Market now has a variety of local bedding plants such as fennel, kale, parsley, and spinach available at the Carrboro store.

For those gardeners who prefer to start their plants from seed, our supply of certified organic seeds from High Mowing Seeds, Vermont, has arrived. We have herb, vegetable, annual, and perennial seeds, including dill, squash, zinnia, and foxglove. All of the planting information is located on the back of each pack of seeds, including planting depth, water, and sun needs, spacing requirements, and soil temperatures. The seeds are available at both the Carrboro and the Southern Village locations. For the best growth, remember to amend your soil with organic material such as compost when planting.
Hot Cross Buns!
Available March 18 - Easter, April 8

While closely associated with the Easter holiday, the tradition of cross-topped buns likely pre-dates Christianity and, like many other pagan symbols, was gradually incorporated into the celebration of the holiday as Christianity spread its influence throughout Europe. Some say the buns themselves date all the way back to the 12th century when an Anglican monk is said to have put the sign of the cross on some buns on Good Friday, known then as the Day of the Cross. His recipe must not have been very good, however, because we don't even know his name. That honor goes to one Father Thomas Rocliff who, as the story goes, whipped up some small spiced cakes, stamped them with a cross, and gave them out to poor villagers visiting the St. Albans monastery on Good Friday, 1361. He must have been more of a baker, because the buns disappeared so quickly that he started making them every year and closely guarded his recipe. Nothing makes it into the annals of food history like a good secret recipe!

This year's buns will be hand-shaped as always and made with organic bread and whole wheat flour, organic brown and white sugar, Maple View Farm whole milk, local eggs, organic Zante currants, European-style butter, a spice mixture of freshly ground nutmeg and allspice with cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and cumin, and sea salt. To top it all off, these will be crossed with a glistening glaze made with organic confectioner's sugar, lemon juice and nutmeg. Get them while you can!

Changing the Signs on the Lawn in Carrboro
Carr Mill will be temporarily removing the signs on the lawn in front of the Carrboro store today to correct the wording. The signs were put up at the end of last week to state Carr Mill's Policy regarding the use of the lawn. The signs mistakenly used an older version of Carr Mill's Open Space Policy that didn't reflect changes that resulted from negotiations last fall between Carr Mill, Weaver Street, and Carrboro Alderman Dan Coleman. The error resulted when the wrong file was sent to the sign maker. When the error was discovered, Carr Mill immediately arranged to take down the signs and have the wording changed. In addition to updating the wording of the Policy, the new signs will start with "Welcome to Carr Mill" to reflect the spirit of the negotiations last fall.

Carr Mill has also agreed to consider changing the location of the signs when they are put up again. It was Weaver Street Market's understanding that the signs would be put up on the edge of the lawn, not in the middle, and we have requested that Carr Mill make that change. We expect that the signs will be put up again next week, and we hope that the location will be changed to the edge of the lawn.

Carrboro Citizen 1st Issue
Longtime local journalist Kirk Ross and third-generation newspaper publisher Robert Dickson announced plans this month to launch The Carrboro Citizen, a weekly community newspaper. The Citizen opened its new offices at 309 Weaver Street on Monday, March 5. The first issue hits the streets March 21 - the first day of Spring. Dickson, who with his sister Anne still owns his family's Hoke County newspaper The News-Journal, said he's seen the need for a Carrboro-focused newspaper since moving to town in 2003. According to Dickson, the idea behind the Citizen is to create a "sustainable community newspaper" that serves as the diary of the town and reflects the spirit of the area.

"Carrboro is an educated, engaged community," Dickson said. "We're very excited about the challenge of creating a paper to serve this unique area," he added.

Ross has covered the area as a reporter for the Chapel Hill News and was recently the Managing Editor of the Independent Weekly. In addition to writing the statewide political column and blog Exile on Jones Street, he also plays in the Carrboro-based rock band Lud. Dickson and Ross started working together on the project last fall after helping a class led by UNC community journalism instructor Jock Lauterer develop an online publication called the Carrboro Commons.

"One of the things the students discovered in their surveys of Carrboro residents was an overwhelming interest in the town having its own printed newspaper," Ross said. "It really got us thinking."

The Citizen will be distributed through street racks and copies in local businesses. In-town Carrboro residents also can sign up for free home delivery.
Help out in Hillsborough

Do you love downtown Hillsborough and farmers? How about talking to friendly folks and early mornings? If you do, then we need your help! Weaver Street Market is organizing volunteers for the Hillsborough Farmers' Market. We're looking for a few committed volunteers to take turns setting up and sitting at a table during the Saturday markets from 8am - 12 noon starting Saturday, March 31. You'll be selling the new Hillsborough Farmers' Market bags and t-shirts and passing out information on the Farmers' Market and Weaver Street Market's upcoming store in Hillsborough.

You must be punctual, be an owner in Weaver Street Market, be able to muster enthusiasm in the morning, and be able to count change accurately. Volunteers will be thanked with a $25 gift certificate to Weaver Street Market for each shift they work.

Seriously folks, I did this once a month last summer and had a great time meeting my neighbors and all their cute dogs!

Send an email to Christy at Christy@weaverstreetmarket.coop that includes your name, email, phone #, and Saturdays that you are available from 8am-12noon for April, May and June.

April Wine Dinner

Wines of the Loire Valley
Monday, April 23
7 - 9:30 pm

Join us for a wine tasting tour of France's Loire Valley. The Loire is a wine region that flanks France's most famous river and produces wines known for their delicate, subtle style such as: sweet wines from Vouvray, delicious and elegant reds from Chinon and Champigny, and the numerous refined whites and sparkling wines from places like Touraine and Saumur. The names alone conjure up images of rolling hills, views of the vast Loire River, and renaissance-era castles, spires and villages. The grapes produced in this region are Melon de Bourgogne, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and a few other more obscure varieties. These wines are incredibly good food wines with their ample acidity and expressive fruit flavors. Join us for this tasting tour and find out what this vast, wine producing area has to offer.

The cost of this event is $40 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.
