| Farmers' Markets Open! | |||
Hillsborough Farmers' Market is open!My first visit to the Hillsborough Farmers' Market last weekend left me excited for a summer of goodies! I'd been told this market was smaller than what I was used to on Saturday mornings in Carrboro, but I arrived to find a lot full of vendors. Everywhere I looked, something different was for sale. My inner shopper took over— never mind budgeting, there was local cheese and handmade jewelry and baby plants to be had! Fearing for my wallet's well-being, I pulled out my notebook and got to work meeting vendors. Here's a brief sampling of what was for sale this early in the season: lettuce, chard, kale, spinach, pork, eggs, cheeses, bread, baked goods, jellies, honey, seedlings, compost and composting worms, soaps, jewelry, artwork, cards, quilts and sewn crafts, and yarn. And here is a list of some of my favorite items: John Blythe's "compost tea," a 100% natural plant food; Simply Sourdough's homemade, bone-shaped dog biscuits, shining in their silver dog bowl; Tobi's Home Baking's decadent "Millionaire Shortbread," a shortbread cookie with homemade caramel and chocolate on top; Heathen Handcrafts' all natural heat packs—they contain feed corn that stays warm or cool after nuking or freezing them; The Farm Fairy's beeswax, sold with a recipe for making your own lip balm; and don't miss Scrambled Acres Farm's chicken-footed table! So whether it's your garden, your stomach, or your inner shopper calling you, get out to a Farmers' Market this weekend! The Hillsborough Farmers' Market is open from 8 to 12 on Saturday mornings. It is located in the Suntrust Bank parking lot off of Churton Street in downtown Hillsborough. The Carrboro Farmers' Market is open from 7 to 12 on Saturday mornings. It is located by the Town Hall in Carrboro. The Durham Farmers' Market (opening April 7) is open from 8 to 12 on Saturday mornings. It is located in the Measurement, Inc. parking lot on the 400 block of Morris St between The Carolina Theater and the old Durham Ball Park in downtown Durham. |

| Global Challenges: Local Solutions | |||
Screening of "After the Peak"April 5, 2007 Century Center in Carrboro 7 pm to 9 pm We know that cheap imported energy won't last forever. But it's a problem that seems overwhelming in its scale and impact. This evening will focus totally on how our energy future might impact Orange County and some of the local solutions available to us. We can act now and we can make the end of cheap oil a much easier transition, if we reflect on the consequences of doing nothing and take hold of our options for the future. "After the Peak" is a docudrama made in Orange County by Filmmaker Jim McQuaid. It uses the form of a local cable TV evening news show to portray how an abrupt end to cheap oil might affect ordinary people, communters, farmers, households, the police, our schools and even sports. |

| Iron Gate Winery | |||
New to the Farm Tour this year!Irong Gate Winery 2540 Lynch Store Rd, Mebane, NC 27302 Phone: 919-304-WINE Debbie Stikeleather and her Husband Gene planted their first vines in 2000. Gene Stikeleather comes from a tobacco farming family and he and Debbie both wanted to protect some of the beautiful countryside from the ever growing residential subdivisions. So, they purchased an old tobacco farm in 2000, and joined the ever-growing number of winery and vineyard owners in North Carolina. Iron Gate is a 60 acre farm, 8 of which are under vines. The land itself is very sandy and has proven to have good drainage and balance for growing grapes. In 2001, Iron Gate bottled a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc, now they bottle nine different wines, the majority of them are estate grown and bottled. The wines produced at this winery are top-notch, high quality wines. Be sure to visit this local producer on the Piedmont Farm Tour, April 21 and 22. |

| Compost Bin Sale | |||
In case you haven't seen the round, black plastic composting bins in front of Weaver Street Market reminding you of the County's Annual Compost Bin Sale, mark your calendar for Saturday, April 7 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Eubanks Road Park and Ride Lot. Bins are $39, about half the retail price. They will fit in the trunk of your car and some assembly is required when you get them home. (Even I could do it successfully!) If you're a composting novice, experts will be at the sale to help you get started. If you're a composting fanatic already, perhaps you need a second bin, or a third! Or you want to give someone an early Christmas present or a unique birthday gift. This is truly a gift that keeps on giving. If you want your compost ready-made to amend right into that waiting soil, or need some mulch to spread around your newly planted bushes, you can find those at the Orange County Landfill Mondays through Fridays, 8:00am to 4:00 pm and Saturdays 7:30 am to noon. The landfill sells a three cubic yard scoop of high-quality aged mulch made from local yard waste for $18. A cubic yard of Class A, unrestricted compost, made in part with locally collected food waste, is $25. Here are two more great opportunities to buy locally grown and produced products rather than cypress mulch, pine bark nuggets or pasteurized cow manure from a big retail chain. (Note: You must tarp your load when leaving the landfill.) |
