By Sally Robertson, WSM Recycling Coordinator
On Saturday, May 5, from noon to 2 pm, The Scrap Exchange will be at Weaver Street in Southern Village with barrels full of materials from which you can fashion Mother's Day gifts and other works of art. It doesn't cost a penny and all of the materials are items that would otherwise have gone into the landfill. The Scrap Exchange, which has a store and Creative ReUse Center at 548 Foster Street in Durham, has collected over 3,000 tons of waste and surplus materials from industry, business, and individuals since it was founded in 1991. It sells the materials to artists and other shoppers, hosts workshops at the store and in the community, and promotes the work of artists who use recycled materials. More

Championing a Better World
The Scrap Exchange continued
Thanks to The Scrap Exchange, would-be trash is being turned into sculpture, furniture, clothing, school projects, wedding decorations, and more.

Last September, Weaver Street Market became a Scrap Exchange contributor. The first week of each month, the Scrap Exchange van comes to the Carrboro store to collect wooden cheese boxes, wine corks, produce crates, the plastic rings from the top of Maple View Farm milk bottles, and assorted other items too interesting to be relegated to the dumpster.

The Scrap Exchange is on the web at www.scrapexchange.org and can be reached at 919-688-6960 or store@scrapexchange.org. If you have materials you'd like to donate, please call ahead to check that they are suitable.

Another cool Scrap Exchange event is coming up on May 20: the Swap-O-Rama Rama from noon to 5 pm at the Durham Armory. Bring a bag of old clothes and a suggested $10 donation, pick out treasures from among other people's old clothes, then alter and accessorize at the waiting sewing machines and screen printing stations.

Tuba Day

Weaver Street Market in Carrboro
Friday, May 4, 2:00-5:00

The Triangle Tuba Quartet (TTQ) was founded in 1998 when several of the members heard their first tuba quartet at the US Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference and decided to form a local group. The TTQ consists of two Euphoniums (sometimes called Baritone Horns), and two tubas (usually a small F tuba and a larger BBb tuba). This unique instrumentation delivers a rich sound that simply needs to be enjoyed in person to appreciate. We enjoy performing a variety of musical styles, from arrangements of classical Bach, Mozart, and Haydn pieces, to modern American music with a jazz or Latin feel. The TTQ currently plays in a variety of Triangle settings, including banquets, music festivals, church services, nursing homes, and weddings.

May Wine Dinner

Wines of Spain
Monday, May 21
7 - 9:30 pm

Join us for a wine tasting of Spain's wonderful wine regions. Spain has the most land under vine in the world and yet is only third in production. Its arid climate and often drought conditions are the cause of extremely low average yields. From the cool Atlantic region of Galicia to the warmer mediterranean climate in the south, Spain's wine producing areas are extremely diverse offering deep rich, alcoholic reds to light minerally whites to its famous fortified wine, sherry. Spain has much to offer wine lovers and novices alike. So, join us Monday, May 21 for a tasting tour of this interesting wine-producing country.

The cost of this event is $40 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.
