Carlo Petrini, founder and president of Slow Food and the slow food movement, will be lecturing in North Carolina on the meaning and value of food traditions, defending biodiversity, and protecting food that is good, clean, and fair. Petrini founded Slow Food in Italy in 1986 in opposition to the encroachment of fast food restaurants. He has worked for the last twenty years to educate people to the value of preserving local and regional ways of growing, processing, and preparing food. Rather than limit our food choices to one or two breeds of chicken or beef or vegetables, he encourages the preservation of heritage breeds, and heirloom vegetable varieties. More

Championing a Better World
Farm to Fork Lecture continued
Petrini's approach to preparing and eating food brings an awareness of taste and process to food that makes eating a delight to the senses and raises it to the level of an experience, not just something to be hurried through standing up, sitting in a car, or by oneself.

This rare opportunity to hear Carlo Petrini locally has been sponsored by the Center for Environmental Farming Systems. The lecture is free and open to the public.

On the Weaver Street Market lawn in Carrboro, 6-8 pm

Weaver Street Market invites the community to enjoy an eclectic mix of local bands under the oaks in Carrboro. Bring a blanket or chair and relax with freshly prepared hot food from our Hot Bar or picnic on cheese, salami, and bread fresh from our bakery. Beer and wine will be available for sale inside the store.

Weaver Street Market loves to see people enjoying our lawn and connecting with their community. To keep this event a safe and fun place, we ask that you only bring friendly, well-behaved dogs on leashes and please clean up after them. We want the children who attend our event to have a safe and happy time too, so we ask that they not be allowed to climb the trees, including the Crepe Myrtles. Lastly, please enjoy the fountain from its perimeter. Thank you for your help in making this event safe and fun for everyone.

May 17- Charles Pettee and Friends - Bluegrass/Finger twisting acoustic originals
May 24- Saludos Compay - original and South American Music
May 31- Different Drum - American music with a World beat

After Hours & the ALE Regulations

We know how much fun it is to sit on the lawn and drink some beers, but unfortunately North Carolina law forbids Weaver Street Market from selling six packs for consumption outside. You can buy beer singles from our cooler, or half-gallon Growlers from Carolina Brewery, but please—be kind to our cashiers and don't buy a six pack to take outside.

Southern Village Dog Parade
Make sure your doggie gets a good night's sleep on May18th, because you will want to bring your pooch to Southern Village for Bloom's 4th Annual Dog Parade, which begins at 10:30am on Saturday, May 19th.

Once again, all the shops on Market Street will hold zany contests that unleash the best that dogs of every size, breed and pedigree have to offer. You and your dog can pre-register at Bloom, or you can register there at the time of the event. Proof of rabies vaccination is required and a $5 donation is requested. All proceeds benefit the Orange County Animal Shelter and The Animal Protection Society.
Special honors this year include:
Best Doggie Breath, by Bloom
Best Costume, by La Vita Dolce
Owner-Dog Look-a-Like, by Pringles Fine Crafts
Best Smile and Bark, by the Cottage Shop
Best Fed, by Pazzo
Largest and Smallest, by Market Street Books
Best Trick, by Weaver Street Market
Best Fur, by Ship Onsite
Most Exotic, by Marrakesh

The Best Costume competition makes the event extra festive, as dogs gaily strut around in boas, frilly frocks, designer tees and even jewelry, eclipsing their owners in the style department. And the more gregarious mutts can show their amazing feats as they compete for the position of top dog in the Talent Contest on the green. Contest winners will be announced on the stage before the parade.

While competing dogs and their owners are stopping by the contest locations for judging, many activities will be happening on the green. Both the Animal Protection Society and the Orange County Animal Shelter will have volunteers on hand with dogs and puppies that people can adopt. The Animal Protection Society will be doing a dog agility demand and a Chapel Hill K-9 officer and his canine partner will present a demonstration of police dog skills

Vendors will be selling special canine accessories, including lap blankets, hand made dog collars and doggie necklaces. Max's Dog Wash Cookies will be on sale, and in front of Bloom, Girl Scouts will be selling Dog Parade T-shirts and Dog Parade logo bottled water. La Vita Dolce will be serving up K-9 kappochinos for the dogs and special gelatos for the kids. Market Street Books will have special books for dog lovers on sale.

A $5 registration donation is suggested. All proceeds from registration, t-shirt, bottled water and a percentage of vendor sales go to our 2 charities - The Orange County Animal Shelter and the Animal Protection Society. We hope to see your doggie in Bloom soon! For more information contact Rosemary Waldorf at 414-2047 or Rena Earnhardt at 942-9880.

Potluck in a Pasture
May 20
5 to 7 pm
Horizon Cellars

A plentiful supply of small farms and creative artists makes rural Chatham County special. You can learn more about many of them during ChathamArts' second annual "Potluck in a Pasture" series inviting you to tour a working farm, share home-grown seasonal food, and meet local artists monthly throughout the summer.

The series takes place every third Sunday beginning May 20, at 466 Vineyard Ridge south of Siler City. The vineyard, owned and operated by Guy Loeffler, is nestled on a 20-acre property off U.S. 421 south of U.S. 64. Directions and information about Horizon Cellars can be found at www.horizoncellears.com. Featured artists at the first potluck of the season include potter Libba Adams, photographer Mark Bashista, watercolorist Shannon Bueker, welded steel artist Tamera Mulanix and pianist Liz Tedesco.

Visitors are asked to bring a pot-luck dish for eight that includes at least one locally grown ingredient (and the recipe to share), as well as a beverage, a lawn chair or blanket and a $10 donation to ChathamArts ($8 for members), $5 for children over 6 ($4 for CA family members). For an additional $5, adults can sample the wines and take a wineglass home to keep. Proceeds benefit ChathamArts, the non-profit county arts council that supports diverse arts and cultural programs in the schools and the community throughout the year

"Our local farms nurture our bodies and inspire our artists," said Daryl Walker, the ChathamArts board member who came up with the idea for the series which drew many visitors last summer. "We hope these suppers will encourage even more people to buy locally produced art and food, and to become more aware and appreciative of the farmers and artists who contribute to our economy and our community."

Local food ingredients for your pot-luck may come from your own backyard or neighboring farms, from local farmers' markets at the Chatham County Fairgrounds in Pittsboro (Thursdays), Fearrington Village (Tuesdays), in downtown Siler City (Saturdays), at Southern Village (Thursdays) and in Carrboro (Wednesdays and Saturdays), or from Chatham Marketplace in Pittsboro and Weaver Street in Southern Village and Carrboro.

The series will continue with other farms and artists on June 17, from 6 to 8 pm, at Holly Hill Daylily Farm in Moncure; July 15, from 6 to 8 pm, at Pugh's Cedarbrake Sheep Farm near Silk Hope; and August 19, from 6 to 8 pm at Harland's Creek Farm west of Pittsboro. Information and directions will be available on-line at www.chathamarts.org or by calling 919.219.9840.

Piedmont Farm Tour Results
By Amy Eller, Carolina Farm Stewardship Association

The Piedmont Farm Tour, co-sponsored by Weaver Street Market and Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, has grown by leaps and bounds over the years. Now in its 12th year, we are pleased to see that trend continuing! Breaking records was the name of the game this year—raising more money, entertaining more visitors, and gaining the support of more volunteers than ever before!

Raising over $25,000 for Carolina Farm Stewardship Association this year, the tour has reached monumental heights. As CFSA celebrates their 25th Anniversary as a non-profit organization, and the 12th year of co-sponsoring this tour, this success is encouraging that the sustainable agriculture movement is reaching new heights as well.

34 farms were generous enough to open their fields to the 3000 plus visitors who enjoyed the most beautiful weather we've seen to date for a farm tour. The sun was shining, a gentle breeze kept the bugs away, and the temperature was not too hot, not too cool—as close to perfection as we could have asked for!

6 new participating farms this year welcomed over a thousand people combined, and the old favorites were packed with visitors as usual; overall the tour-goers made over 11,000 stops at the farms! CFSA is very pleased with this opportunity to bring more awareness to these fabulous farms, and the idea of supporting local and organic agriculture. This was an excellent opportunity to educate more piedmont families about what is available right in our own backyards. What's more, is that the farm tour message reached even further this year as three vanloads of Louisiana State University students and extension agents drove all the way to the Piedmont just for this tour!

CFSA would like to extend a huge thanks for the tremendous efforts of Weaver Street Market, the farmers on the tour, and the volunteers who donated over 900 hours of their time to make this tour the best yet. Here's to the next 25 years!

May Wine Dinner

Wines of Spain
Monday, May 21
7 - 9:30 pm

Join us for a wine tasting of Spain's wonderful wine regions. Spain has the most land under vine in the world and yet is only third in production. Its arid climate and often drought conditions are the cause of extremely low average yields. From the cool Atlantic region of Galicia to the warmer mediterranean climate in the south, Spain's wine producing areas are extremely diverse offering deep rich, alcoholic reds to light minerally whites to its famous fortified wine, sherry. Spain has much to offer wine lovers and novices alike. So, join us Monday, May 21 for a tasting tour of this interesting wine-producing country.

The cost of this event is $40 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.
