Giant Cookie Arrives at WSM

By Emily Buehler, WSM Contributing Writer
Autumn weather finally rolled into town, and along with it rolled two giant cookies—one at Southern Village on Saturday, and another on the lawn in Carrboro on Sunday. The cookies were part of a fundraiser for children's programming at the Carrboro Artscenter, sponsored by Weaver Street Market and the Immaculate Baking Company of Hendersonville, NC. The folks from Immaculate Baking Company arrived at 9 AM both days, towing the "oven" behind them on a trailer. More

10' Cookie Results! continued
Once assembled, the oven was a flat metal surface ten feet across, built to accommodate a giant ten-foot cookie. Workers then laid out parchment paper and "tiles" of frozen cookie dough, patching the spaces between the tiles with scraps of dough. Once the dough was laid, poles were raised around the edge and a Mylar cover was put on. The oven was heated with hot air blown in on one side, reflected back at the cookie by the Mylar.

While the cookie baked, visitors were treated to free Mapleview ice cream, balloons, face-painting, and henna tattoos in folk art designs. The crowd at Southern Village milled about, listening to Irish fiddle tunes by the Walker Street Fiddlers. In Carrboro on Sunday, the event coincided with the weekly Jazz Brunch, and the lawn was full of the usual crowd of brunch-goers, hula-hoopers, and dancers. When the band finished, a few members of the Fiddlers were on hand to play and led the crowd in a song they had composed about the cookie.

As the cookie finished baking, the crowd gathered round, counting down to the moment when the Mylar cover was thrown back to reveal the giant baked cookie. Amid much cheering, people lined up to buy cookie vouchers and to turn them in for decorative boxes containing a pound of the cookie. Children shuttled cookie boxes from the oven to the table. Some people opted to take their cookie home, while others stood eating it straight out of the box with a fork.

The Giant Cookie couldn't have rolled into town on a better weekend. The weather was beautiful, and people were praying for an excuse to be outside. And eating cookie for a good cause...what could be easier? Overall, the events raised $2544 for the Artscenter.

4th Annual Fall Wine Sale coming soon!
by Cat Moleski, Features EditorOctober 5-21
I love working the Wine Show here at Weaver Street Market for several reasons. The first and to me, most important, is the thrill of tasting the new wines Peg has found. I have enjoyed discovering dozens of new wines that she's picked over the last few years. With over 40 wines to taste at our two shows this fall, there is ample time to taste and taste again!

The second reason I love the Wine Shows and Sale is the excitement of discovering 'the wine of the show.' This is the wine that everyone loves and is usually at a great price. Word spreads like wildfire and everyone makes sure they get a taste and maybe a case or two for the cellar. Some wines will be up to 50% off and prices will range from $3.99-$29.99. I hear the call of the hunt already!

Peg has packed this Wine Sale with classics like Brunello di Montalcino, champagne, pinot noir, Chianti Classico, Prosecco, Cotes du Rhone and many more. I'm looking forward to trying the 5 organic wines we'll have this year. One is sulphite-free. Yea!

I also have a great time at the Shows watching people come in as strangers but after bumping elbows and glasses through seven tables full of wine, they come out comrades in glasses! Whatever your reasons are for attending our Wine Shows, this is sure to be our best wine sale yet. Cheers!

Benefit Car Show
For Historic Hillsborough Speedway!
By Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

At first, the Occoneechee-Orange Speedway simply looks like a peaceful, wooded walking trail. Meander down it a bit, though, and you'll come to the concrete grandstand, leftover from the days when the trail was a dirt track for NASCAR racing. Built in 1947, the Speedway is the only track remaining from the inaugural season of NASCAR. It is also one of only three tracks on the National Register of Historic Places, along with the Indianapolis Speedway and the Bonneville Salt Flats, where drivers gathered in the 1930s to try to break land speed records.

To raise money for restoration and preservation of the track, the Historic Speedway Group is sponsoring a "Celebration of the Automobile" Car Show at the speedway on Saturday, September 29. The event is free to the public and includes the car show (featuring "Classic, Antique, Custom, Muscle, and Race Cars"); a reunion of the Old Timers Racing Club; chances to meet former drivers, their family and friends, famous cars, car owners, rookie sensation 13-year-old Hunter Synan of Roxboro, and "Miss Occoneechee Speedway"; live music by the Castaways and the A.L. Stanback school band; a live auction of racing memorabilia; and a display of NASCAR driver Junior Johnson's new product line of Carolina Moonshine: "Junior Johnson's not racing anymore, but he's still driving 'White Lightning'." There will be ice cream and food vendors and free kids' rides.

The event is from 8 to 5 at the Speedway, on Elizabeth Brady Road in Hillsborough. For more information, call Frank Craig at 919.563.6532/604-2292, or visit the website at http://historicspeedwaygroup.org.

Farm Dinner Tonight!

Today, September 18, 5:30 - 9 pm
Featuring dishes created with cheese from the Chapel Hill Creamery, owned and operated by Flo Hawley and Portia McKnight.

Since the very beginning six years ago, big and small decisions at Chapel Hill Creamery have been driven by an underlying philosophy of raising "cows that are healthy and happy, and improving the quality of the land". Their Jersey cows spend their time on pasture. An intensive rotational grazing system ensures that the herd feeds on different seasonal grasses, providing different nutritional benefits. Chapel Hill Creamery produces ten different cheeses, and sometimes a bit of pork. The herd currently numbers around 35, with 15 being milked while the other cows take their turn to rest up or to have babies. And, there are always adorable and happy calves on this lovely Hillsborough farm.

Reservations accepted for parties of 6 or more.
Patio dining available.
