We're making a few changes

Change is much lauded, but we all know that the realities of implementing change can seem unsettling. Whenever you try something new, discard an old system, or put a plan into practice for the first time, there are always those moments of worry, regret, and dismay that accompany the loss of the familiar. However, as Pearl S. Buck wrote in 1967, "Growth itself contains the germ of happiness." The scope of the changes at Weaver Street Market are broad, but we believe the long-term benefits far outweigh any initial inconveniences. More

Seafood & Meat Transitions continued
Witness the transformation of the Weaver Street Market Meat and Seafood Department. In the past, all meat and seafood handling and packaging was done in a tiny back room in the Carrboro store. Frozen and refrigerated storage was limited, and there was little room to stock product on the sales floor. This greatly restricted our ability to offer the array of natural meats and wild-caught or responsibly-farmed seafood requested by our customers. The decision to move the processing and packaging of meat and seafood to the new Food House in Hillsborough was motivated by our desire to improve product quality and expand selection.

Our remodeled handling facilities now feature specially designed rooms that are climate-controlled to ensure that meat and seafood products maintain a stable temperature every step of the way. New packaging technologies keep meat and seafood cold, fresh, and clean, minimizing contamination from exposure to bacteria and guaranteeing a higher level of quality.

Along with a reorganization of our display space, these innovations make it possible for Weaver Street Market to expand our product selection to include a whole new world of fresh and frozen meats and seafood. In the coming months look for Halibut, Crab legs, ocean Perch, wild-caught Alaskan Sockeye salmon, and farm-raised organic Shrimp. In addition, we will be introducing ready-to-cook entrees like Panko-breaded Tilapia and beer-battered Flounder. We plan to debut fresh Rabbit, ground Bison, and Duck in the near future.

In keeping with our mission to seek out local producers committed to the practice of responsible animal husbandry and sustainable aquaculture, we are cultivating relationships with the growing population of ranchers and fishers in our area who share our passion for quality food. As we work to expand and improve our Meat and Seafood Department, we welcome your suggestions and appreciate your support.

The initial Seafood & Meat transitions will take place in Carrboro next Tuesday, May 27.

Hillsborough Management Team
Old and new faces!
The management team for our Hillsborough store is taking shape! Alice Lamson, whom many of you know as our Carrboro Store Manager, will move to our Hillsborough store as the new store manager to head up the team there. Carolyn Twesten, who currently works in our Carrboro store Produce Department, will bring her love of produce, knowledge of farming and horticulture, and enthusiasm for all things Hillsborough as the new Produce Manager, and Nabbale, currently manager of the Carrboro Front End will take her leadership skills to the Customer Service Department in Hillsborough. New to WSM, Deborah Beatty who brings a lot of great knowledge for the prepared foods and specialty areas, is the new Specialty Manager in Hillsborough.

In Carrboro - Casey First joined the Carrboro store team as the new Grocery Manager. Casey has both a lot of knowledge about running a grocery department, and a deep interest in the cooperative model. Norma Lazaro has been promoted to Front End Manager, and will be making this transition soon—however, the staff frequently comments that they already think of her as "patrona" so this should not be a big change!

Congratulations and welcome to new and transitioning staff!
