OC Farmers' Market a little bit of everything The fledgling Orange County Farmers' Market is underway at the new Public Market House, tucked behind the courthouse buildings on Margaret Lane in Hillsborough. Hoping to take pictures without impeding customers, I arrive early. And it's a good thing because Whitted-Bowers Farm's strawberries sell out in the first hour. Rob and Cheri Bowers are committed to selling at the new South Estes Market in Chapel Hill, but they hope to have enough resources to sell in Hillsborough as well. Today Cheri is behind the table, and she's brought her about-to-bloom clivia plant to share with everyone. She tells me the last of the strawberries may linger into June, although the rain and cold of May has been hard on them. More |

The rain's also been hard on the Bowers' world-class melons, which may appear by the end of the month. Although the Orange County market is small, there's a little bit of everything: fruits and vegetables, meat and eggs, plants and flowers, cheeses, and crafts. A few tables down from the strawberries, Greta Clark of Baby Dreams is knitting and selling strawberry-shaped baby hats. Greta thinks of her knitted clothes not just as baby gifts, but as heirlooms: they'll survive far longer than the average item bought at the mall. She has booties and knitted cupcakes for doll parties. She sews dresses, including some with "smocking," a hard-to-find heirloom embroidery technique. Greta also sells crocheted sweaters, blankets, and baby balls, made by a friend stationed in Burma in the foreign service.

| New Events Coordinator | |||
Hello to everyone at Weaver Street Market! My name is Jason Baker, and I'm the new Events Coordinator. I've been a customer almost since day one of moving to the area in 2002, and consumer-owner from shortly after, so I'm thrilled to be working at what's not only one of my favorite stores but one of my favorite hangouts as well. I just finished up an extended tour through the UNC undergraduate experience where I studied political science, city planning, and environmental studies.Before coming to WSM, I spent the past seven years traveling the East Coast helping to put on events at colleges and universities. It was a blast, but I'm ready to start spending some more time in the community I love here in Orange County. When I'm not at work, I spend a good amount of time reading, exploring the outdoors, and probably a little bit too much time playing SimCity and serving on committees. It's an exciting time to start working here, with a whole new store on the way offering lots of possibilities for adding to and diversifying the kinds of events we put on, and of course keeping good things going at the Carrboro and Southern Village locations. Feel free to come say hello next time you're at After Hours or Jazz Brunch this summer. I'm always looking for new ideas for bands, events, or just generally fun things we can do here at Weaver Street Market, so let me know what's on your mind! |

| Community Investment Initiative |
Have you considered investing in Weaver Street Market?The expansion of our Southern Village store is nearly complete, the new store and commissary in Hillsborough are on track to open soon, and we're beginning a suite of improvements to the Carrboro store. Weaver Street Market celebrates out 20th anniversary this month, and we're sure working hard to make the next 20 better every day, but to keep everything moving along we need several more community members to make 5-year loans of $10,000 or more. We've nearly reached our member investment goal for this phase of the expansion project, but still need a few more members of the Co-op to make this additional investment; please contact us soon if you would like to receive more information about the Community Investment program, including the complete Offering Memorandum. Why should you loan money to Weaver Street Market? • Your investment stays with a local business you know and trust; where three times as much money filters back into the community as in a corporate-owned business. • Your investment benefits your Co-op, and supports our initiatives that include paying a living wage, and our long-time support of local agriculture. • Help us expand our Southern Village store, open a new store in Hillsborough, and improve our Carrboro store. More space! New products! • We'll pay 6% simple interest annually, and repay the principal after 5 years. |

The Sustainable Furniture Council SundayJune 15, 2008 at CHICLE 5:00 pm, Free and open to the public Susan Inglis, Executive Director of the Sustainable Furniture Council, will talk about the organization's work, with an emphasis on how this fairly new educational organization is making a difference in reducing the amount of illegal logging that the home furnishings industry is responsible for. SFC was founded by Gerry Cooklin, who manufactures South Cone furniture in Peru & Argentina. He greened his own operation and started several important sustainability projects when he realized what a large part the home furnishings industry can play in halting deforestation in the Amazon River Basin.
