roasting coffee locally since 1991

As one of our area's most experienced coffee roasters, Joe Van Gogh (formerly Cup A Joe) has a well-deserved reputation for quality. "We really try to make sure our coffee is fresh, that's the most important thing," says Robbie Roberts, owner and roaster. Founded in 1991 as a small coffee shop and roastery, the company has grown to include two cafés in Chapel Hill and one in Durham, as well as a caf´ in downtown Hillsborough and a separate roasting facility nearby. In the past 15 years the folks at Joe Van Gogh have formed strong relationships with farmers and brokers all over the world, and this enables them to obtain some of the finest single origin beans available. Joe Van Gogh continued
At a time when national chains tout their one-size-fits-all 'signature roast', Joe Van Gogh bucks the trend, varying the roasting style for each of their single origin beans in order to maximize the potential of the coffee. "We try to arrive at a roast level for each coffee that makes it as exciting as it can be," explains Roberts.

Joe Van Gogh's commitment to quality encompasses a vision of social justice and environmental conservation that fits nicely with the values of Weaver Street Market. In addition to seeking out organic, fairly traded, and shade-grown coffees, Joe Van Gogh has partnered with the Café Femenino Foundation, a group dedicated to improving the lives of women in isolated regions of Central and South America by using money generated from the sale of fair trade coffees. The Foundation addresses the issues of poverty, lack of education, and domestic abuse that plague female coffee growers living in rural areas. Beginning in 2004 with a co-op in Northern Peru, the program has grown to include farmers in Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.

At Weaver Street Market we are always pleased to promote local producers who share our passion for good food and our commitment to sustainable living. When these local partnerships translate into positive change for communities across the world, we all benefit. Go ahead, brew yourself a fresh cup of Joe Van Gogh's Café Femenino and take a moment to contemplate this happy convergence of good taste and good ideas.

Imagining Burma: A Post-National Film Series

Join Weaver Street Market on Thursday, July 17th for a pre-party for "Imagining Burma: A Post-National Film Series" on our Carrboro lawn. This series aims to critically explore the issue of blurred national boundaries of Burma through a program of feature-length films and documentaries, as well as to raise awareness and provide assistance for the Burmese communities who were directly and indirectly affected by Cyclone Nargis.

Come listen to WXYC DJs spin Southeast Asian music to raise awareness about Cyclone Nargis relief efforts! Authentic Burmese cuisine will be served on the lawn by members of Carrboro's large and vibrant Burmese refugee community. Following the gathering on our lawn, head on over to Southern Rail to watch a film, The Burmese Harp, at Southern Rail (The Station) from 10pm to midnight. The series will continue on July 31, with a pair of documentaries, "Our Burmese Days" and "Burma" from 7pm to 9pm at the Hanes Art Center. The third event in the series will be a screening and Southeast Asian Dance party from 9pm to 2am on August 14 at the Nightlight.

Event is co-sponsored by the Southeast Asian Interest Society (SEAIS), WXYC, and the UNC Chapel Hill departments of Comparative Literature, Asian Studies, International Studies, and the Institute for the Environment.

Cyclone Nargis was a strong tropical cyclone that caused the deadliest natural disaster in the recorded history of Burma when it made landfall in May of this year.

Get on the bus!
Friday July 25
Wineries: Black Wolf Vineyards, Shelton Vineyards, McRitchie Winery
Tickets $75
Includes: Chartered bus, breakfast, lunch, snacks, all winery fees and souvenir tasting glasses.

Have you ever been to a vineyard and winery? Have you driven down a winding country road until row after row of grape vines appeared before your eyes? I have, and it is truly inspiring! Now, have you ever done this in North Carolina? No? Well, now's your chance!

Walking through a vineyard in the spring and seeing the season's first buds, or later in the summer and beholding bright, plump bunches of almost ripe grapes, is a sight I'll not soon forget. It reminds me where that amazing wine I had last night came from: the earth, sky, air and some dedicated farmers. Yes. Farmers. Although I wish it did, wine doesn't magically appear in front of us whenever we get thirsty. It is the product of someone's hard work and dedication that makes it possible for us to enjoy a delicious glass of wine whenever we so choose. Working a vineyard is a year round job. Days and days of pruning, trellising, planting, and harvesting go into each bottle of wine that sits upon our shelves. It's an awesome process.

If you'd like to know more, see beautiful vines, and tour wineries, you can do it all right here in your home state. If you want to hear someone wax poetic about wine other than your friendly neighborhood wine merchant, than get on this bus. This month, we'll take you to three great NC wineries to see beautiful vineyards nestled into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, tour wineries big and small, and taste hand-made, hand-crafted wines made right here in our home state.

Join us on a chartered bus, and enjoy a day packed with winery tours, beautiful vistas, great people, and best of all, terrific North Carolina wines. Peg Todloski, our wine merchandiser, has handpicked each winery and will personally guide you through our daylong tour.

For tickets and complete details, check with our service desk in our Carrboro store. Tickets are $75.00 each and include a continental breakfast, lunch, all tasting and tour fees, souvenir glasses and door prizes!

What she has found is a state with a thriving wine industry, great people and beautiful vineyards. She's excited to share her experiences with you, through a tasting dinner of this state's wines. Join us and enjoy plenty of delicious dishes prepared by Panzanella chef, Chris Capron.

The cost of this event is $45 per person; space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this tasting at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.

Community Roots
Community Investment Initiative
Have you considered investing in Weaver Street Market?
The expansion of our Southern Village store is nearly complete, the new store and commissary in Hillsborough have opened and are exceeding expectations, and we're beginning a suite of improvements to the Carrboro store. Weaver Street Market celebrates out 20th anniversary this month, and we're sure working hard to make the next 20 better every day, but to keep everything moving along we need several more community members to make 5-year loans of $10,000 or more.

We've nearly reached our member investment goal for this phase of the expansion project, but still need a few more members of the Co-op to make this additional investment; please contact us soon if you would like to receive more information about the Community Investment program, including the complete Offering Memorandum.

Why should you loan money to Weaver Street Market?
• Your investment stays with a local business you know and trust; where three times as much money filters back into the community as in a corporate-owned business.
• Your investment benefits your Co-op, and supports our initiatives that include paying a living wage, and our long-time support of local agriculture.
• Help us expand our Southern Village store, open a new store in Hillsborough, and improve our Carrboro store. More space! New products!
• We'll pay 6% simple interest annually, and repay the principal after 5 years.
