seducing your senses!

by Elizabeth Friend, Contributing Writer
Rob Bowers is on a mission to change the way you think about melons. "I've been a melon fancier for a very long time," he explains. "There are so many amazing melons out there but they're hard to find." The types of cantaloupes, honeydews, and watermelons usually available in grocery stores are chosen by growers because they ship well and last a long time. Flavor is often an afterthought. Not so for the melons from Whitted Bowers Farms. Rob and his wife Cheri specialize in heirloom varieties that seduce the senses with beautiful colors and a bounty of flavor. He notes, "People try these and feel like they've never tasted melon before." More

Whitted Bowers Melons continued
One of the first to ripen is the Blacktail Mountain watermelons. These dark diminutive melons are very sweet and juicy, and their smaller size makes them perfect for private picnics. Later in the season the Moon and Stars watermelons make their appearance. Named for the smattering of yellow 'stars' against a verdant sky, these heirloom beauties nearly disappeared from seed catalogs after the 1920's, and have only recently begun to make a comeback. Another forgotten favorite is the Mountain Sweet Yellow Watermelon. The succulent amber-hued flesh makes quite a splash in fruit salads!

Chances are the cantaloupes from Whitted Bowers Farm are unlike any you've tasted before. Both the Noir de Carmes and Charantais varieties are classic French dessert melons. Named for the Carmelite monks who preserved the melon, the rind of the Noir de Carmes ripens from an inky black to a bright orange. The combination of heady fragrance and complex flavor makes this an unusual delight. It's rare to find Charantais melons in grocery stores as the thin skin and high sugar content make them especially fragile and hard to ship. Intensely sweet with a heavenly aroma, the flavor has been described as 'divine.' Another European delicacy brought to you by the Bowers is the Amarillo Oro, a yellow Spanish melon similar to honeydew. This golden oblong melon boasts sweet, pale, creamy flesh, and is traditionally served with ginger, thin-sliced cured ham, and a glass of sherry.

When it comes to picking a good melon, Rob suggests tossing aside your assumptions. "Sometimes the uglier a melon is the better it will taste, especially with cantaloupes." Because they don't have to be shipped long distances, all the Bowers' melons are picked ripe and arrive at Weaver Street ready to enjoy.

In addition to being certified organic, Whitted Bowers Farm is operated according to biodynamic principals, which emphasize a holistic approach to agriculture. "We pay attention to intent. There's positive energy going into the food," Rob explains. "We're trying to help people become aware that the nourishing power of food goes beyond the vitamins and minerals—there's an aspect of food that nourishes the spirit as well."

Look for Whitted Bowers Farm melons at all of our locations.

Recipe: Best Fried Green Tomatoes
This Saturday, July 26 is Tomato Day at the Carrboro Farmers' Market!

INGREDIENTS:
• 4 large green tomatoes
• 2 eggs
• 1/2 cup milk
• 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup cornmeal
• 1/2 cup bread crumbs
• 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt
• 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
• 1 quart vegetable oil for frying

DIRECTIONS:
1. Slice tomatoes 1/2 inch thick. Discard the ends.
2. Whisk eggs and milk together in a medium-size bowl. Scoop flour onto a plate. Mix cornmeal, bread crumbs and salt and pepper on another plate. Dip tomatoes into flour to coat. Then dip the tomatoes into milk and egg mixture. Dredge in breadcrumbs to completely coat.
3. In a large skillet, pour vegetable oil (enough so that there is 1/2 inch of oil in the pan) and heat over a medium heat. Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches of 4 or 5, depending on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the tomatoes, they should not touch each other. When the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side. Drain them on paper towels. From Allrecipes

Get on the bus!
Friday July 25
Wineries: Black Wolf Vineyards, Shelton Vineyards, McRitchie Winery
Tickets $75
Includes: Chartered bus, breakfast, lunch, snacks, all winery fees and souvenir tasting glasses.

Have you ever been to a vineyard and winery? Have you driven down a winding country road until row after row of grape vines appeared before your eyes? I have, and it is truly inspiring! Now, have you ever done this in North Carolina? No? Well, now's your chance!

Walking through a vineyard in the spring and seeing the season's first buds, or later in the summer and beholding bright, plump bunches of almost ripe grapes, is a sight I'll not soon forget. It reminds me where that amazing wine I had last night came from: the earth, sky, air and some dedicated farmers. Yes. Farmers. Although I wish it did, wine doesn't magically appear in front of us whenever we get thirsty. It is the product of someone's hard work and dedication that makes it possible for us to enjoy a delicious glass of wine whenever we so choose. Working a vineyard is a year round job. Days and days of pruning, trellising, planting, and harvesting go into each bottle of wine that sits upon our shelves. It's an awesome process.

If you'd like to know more, see beautiful vines, and tour wineries, you can do it all right here in your home state. If you want to hear someone wax poetic about wine other than your friendly neighborhood wine merchant, than get on this bus. This month, we'll take you to three great NC wineries to see beautiful vineyards nestled into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, tour wineries big and small, and taste hand-made, hand-crafted wines made right here in our home state.

Join us on a chartered bus, and enjoy a day packed with winery tours, beautiful vistas, great people, and best of all, terrific North Carolina wines. Peg Todloski, our wine merchandiser, has handpicked each winery and will personally guide you through our daylong tour.

For tickets and complete details, check with our service desk in our Carrboro store. Tickets are $75.00 each and include a continental breakfast, lunch, all tasting and tour fees, souvenir glasses and door prizes!

They will present "Foods That Heal" and show how to prepare different foods for different types of healing issues. Emily uses traditional Chinese Medicine for assessment with her clients. In this class, they will use several fictional people as examples. Each of the 3 or 4 'types' will be a compilation of symptoms, personality type, and health history. Emily will talk about the foods best suited for these types and together they will prepare and describe how to make these simple and whole foods. Call 401-9333 to reserve a space.

Wine Special

While our supply lasts, we'll continue to feature Chateau de Campuget Rosé 2007, made from Grenache Noir (30%) and Syrah (70%). Chateau de Campuget in Costieres de Nimes is a beautiful wine property dating back to 1640, located between Nimes and Arles. Try it with salads or anything you please—a delicious, refreshing, versatile food wine. "Chateau de Campuget is one of the stars of the up and coming appellation of Costieres de Nimes." - Robert Parker Jr. Wine Advocate #117

When the lovely French rosé is gone, we'll be featuring 2006 Monmousseau Vouvray. With a light hay color and aromas of honey and ripe apples, this Chenin Blanc from France's Loire Valley is pleasing and delicate—mildly sweet, mildly acidic—very easy to drink with or without food. The '06 Monmousseau has the characteristic off-dry style, with a silky mouth-feel and flavors of pear, citrus, and sweet apple. A perfect wine for sweeter wine lovers to enjoy that will also please those who generally choose drier whites. Try it with foods that won't overpower it, like the Potato and Fennel Lasagna or the NC Rainbow Trout. $5.50 by glass $27 by bottle
