Leah Cook & Mark Thomas

by Elizabeth Friend, Contributing Writer
At Wild Hare Farm in Cedar Grove, Leah Cook coaxes beauty from the North Carolina clay. Every year from March until September she brings arm-loads of colorful blossoms to the Carrboro Farmers' Market, local florists and eateries, and now to Weaver Street Market in Hillsborough. After training with Ken Dawson of Maple Spring Gardens for the better part of a decade, Leah decided to start her own farm, specializing in cut flowers. Seven years later, she and partner Mark Thomas are still going strong. "We love what we do, and we're grateful to be in an area that supports local farmers. It's a lot of hard work. Cut flowers are just as challenging as any vegetable, but it's very rewarding." More

Wild Hare Flowers continued
Leah gets a head start on spring by planting in hoop houses, simple unheated greenhouses that magnify the sun's heat during winter months. As the days warm up, the sides of the hoop houses can be raised to allow ventilation and regulate temperature. The season begins with the delicate Ranunculus, an elegant relative to the buttercup, that looks as though it were crafted from crepe paper by skilled artisans. Delphiniums, Freesias, and Dutch Iris soon follow. From June through August, Wild Hare Farm produces the quintessential flowers of summer: Sunflowers, Zinnias, and Black-Eyed Susans. The fragrant Tuberose and noble Gladiolus come into bloom during the peak of summer and last until the end of the growing season in September. Fall and winter months are spent sowing cover crops and tending to farm chores, repairs, building projects, and anything else that might get overlooked during the rest of the flower season.

A talented and experienced gardener, Leah Cook is committed to sustainable agriculture. Her top quality crops are produced without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides, using crop rotation and ground covers to maintain the health of the soil. Currently Wild Hare Farm has two acres under cultivation, with additional hoop houses planned for the near future. We are excited to welcome this gifted grower to Weaver Street Market.

Next time you are shopping in Hillsborough, stop and smell the flowers!

"Preservation"
paintings by Mary Charlton
Now - September 28, 2008

Through the paintings in this exhibit, Mary Charlton preserves her memories of animals in their environments and of a rapidly changing lanscape. The buildings and ways of life visible in some of this artwork are identified with a time and place (rural North Carolina) that is still familiar, but losing ground. The paintings reveal emotions, dreams, and the basic elements of life and earth. The artist's themes concern the earth and her creatures, boundaries and freedom. Email Mary.

Panzanella Closed 8/15

Panzanella will be closed for dinner on Friday, August 15 for a private party.

We are sorry if this inconveniences our patrons and ask that you mark your calendars and plan to visit us on another day.
