The lecture, "Local, Living Economies: Green, Fair and Fun," sponsored by Burt's Bees, is free and open to the public. Reserved seats for Friends of CEFS are available. The 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. private reception is sponsored by Compass Group. Visit their website or call 919-513-0954 for detailed information.Wicks founded Philadelphia's famed White Dog Café in 1983. The Café sources all produce in season from local, organic farms. All meat and poultry is humanely raised, and fish and seafood are sourced from sustainable fisheries. When purchasing imported products (coffee), the Café adheres to the principles of fair trade. One hundred percent of electricity is purchased from wind power sources, the first business in Pennsylvania to do so. Twenty percent of the Café's profits are contributed to other non-profits and every employee earns a living wage, health insurance, paid holidays and vacations and a matched retirement fund. In 2001, Wicks co-founded the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) to "catalyze, strengthen, and connect networks of locally owned independent businesses that are green and fair." Today, BALLE supports more than 55 active networks across the United States and Canada. All networks work to ensure that economic power resides locally, sustaining healthy community life and natural life, as well as long-term economic viability. Wicks' has won numerous awards, including the James Beard Foundation's Humanitarian of the Year in 2005. Other accolades include Oprah Magazine's "5 Amazingly Gifted and Giving Food Professionals," and Inc. Magazine's 25 favorite entrepreneurs. Judy co-authored "The White Dog Café Cookbook: Multicultural Recipes and Tales of Adventure from Philadelphia's Revolutionary Restaurant", and is currently working on a book about her business and the local living economy movement.
