2008 Awards

Weaver Street Market's Cooperative Community Fund was established as a permanent fund whose interest will be given annually to local groups working on issues related to sustainable agriculture and organic food, hunger and malnutrition, environmental protection, and cooperatives. Eight community groups responded to our call for applications for this year's CCF grant. A great group of Weaver Street Market worker- and consumer-owners volunteered to process the applications and determine who would receive this year's awards. Choosing from among all the wonderful groups working in was community was a difficult task. More

Cooperative Community Fund 2008 Awards continued
Thanks to all of our volunteers who helped in this process. Our CCF Committee met for the final time last Tuesday, and Weaver Street Market is proud to announce the recipients of our 2008 Cooperative Community Fund Award, who will each receive a $500 check at our annual meeting on October 19th:
Neighbor House of Hillsborough
Neighbor House is a nonprofit that strives to prevent hunger and malnutrition in Hillsborough and northern Orange County. By creating a collaboration between churches and civic groups, Neighbor House works to provide hot, nutritious meals to anyone in need through their Food For All program, serving food out of the trunks of volunteer's cars.

In addition to ongoing efforts to serve regular meals to the less fortunate in our community, Neighbor House hopes to establish a soup kitchen in the near future to better provide their services. A second long-term goal is to build an emergency shelter to provide temporary dwelling space for those in difficult circumstances.

Table Ministries
TABLE is a hunger relief organization based in Carrboro, which combines a coalition of college students and community volunteers committed to feeding hungry children in Chapel Hill and Carrboro and raising awareness and response to the increasing rate of childhood hunger in our area. Less than a year old, TABLE is rapidly expanding the size and scope of their work.

TABLE operates a Weekend Backpack Program, providing nutritious food for Chapel Hill-Carrboro elementary school age children who are at risk for hunger during weekends when federally funded public school breakfasts and lunches are not available. The program incorporates both non-perishable groceries as well as a selection of fresh, local foods. By placing food in backpacks, not grocery bags, children are given a sense of privacy.

Toxic Free NC
Toxic Free North Carolina is a nonprofit that has been fighting pesticide pollution in North Carolina for over twenty years. Their work spans the entire state, but has recently encompassed several great projects in our area, including organizing citizen campaigns for least-toxic pest control in public school systems in Orange and Chatham Counties, a grassroots lobbying campaign for legislation to protect farm workers from pesticides, and an ongoing Latino/a organizing initiative in Chatham County.

Currently, Toxic Free NC is focusing on two main areas: Just & Sustainable Agriculture, and Toxic Free Kids. Just & Sustainable Agriculture works to increase access to locally grown organic food, improve public policy for fair organic farming, and strengthen regulations to protect everyone who may otherwise be harmed by pesticides. Toxic Free Kids seeks to reduce or eliminate pesticide use in public schools and childcare centers to reduce exposure to harmful toxins.

An elderly violinist is stuck between two camps in this drama set in 1970s rural Mexico. While his fellow villagers hide out in the mountains preparing a revolt, Don Plutarco rides into the occupied territory on a donkey, and gradually charms suspicious military officials with his violin playing. He appears to win the soldiers' trust, but there's a constant sense of threat in this downbeat but disturbing tale. Shot in black and white, it's a challenging yet rewarding watch.

Africa Rising
Saturday, September 20th
Dirty South Improvisation
7:30pm; tickets $15.

Dirty South Improvisation (the comedy improv theater housed in Carr Mill Mall) is hosting a fundraiser for the local non-profit Africa Rising. DSI will be using the "Mr. Ambassador" format in which a guest (in this case, from Africa Rising) tells short, true stories. The improv troupe then takes bits from a story and runs with it. For those of you who know improv and how it can head "south" with the humor, DSI will be using their clean format where someone rings a bell when the humor starts to go astray. For some of you, that will be a disappointment, for others it will ease your mind. The show starts at 7:30pm; tickets are $15.

Africa Rising is a new non-profit in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area focusing on discovering and supporting Africans that are creatively addressing their local community's needs ().

October Wine Dinner

Loire Valley Wines
Monday, October 13, 7:00 - 9:30 pm

Join us October 13 for a wine tasting tour of France's Loire Valley. The Loire is a wine region that flanks France's most famous river, a region that produces wines known for their delicate, subtle style such as sweet wines from Vouvray, delicious and elegant reds from Chinon and Champigny, and the numerous refined whites and sparkling wines from places like Touraine and Saumur. The names alone conjure up images of rolling hills, the vast Loire River, and Renaissance-era castles, spires and villages. The grapes produced in this region are Melon de Bourgogne, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and a few other more obscure varieties. These wines are incredibly good food wines with ample acidity and expressive fruit flavors. Join us for this tasting tour and find out what this vast, wine producing area has to offer. Plenty of delicious food will be prepared to complement these wonderful French wines.

The cost of this event is $45 per person. Space is limited, so reserve early. Please pay in advance and pick up a ticket for this event at either Panzanella or the customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.
