Shop Local
"keep the home guys going"

How many shopping days are left? As the pressure mounts to fill your list of Christmas wishes, take a moment to stop and think about the impact of the money you will spend this Holiday season. Through your spending you have the power to affect many lives. When you choose to buy from a locally-owned business, your money works for you and your community.

Locally-owned businesses support other smaller businesses such as accountants, architects, computer techs, lawyers and designers. They can offer a wider selection of independently-made items or goods made by small local producers. Chain stores frequently import building designs, graphics and advertising from other locations. Payroll, taxes, and other administrative tasks are shipped out to a headquarters far away. Not to mention the pure profit dollars that simply flow out of your community, leaving behind an absentee-owned business that does not care how its actions impact your area. A locally-owned business is more likely to stay during up times and down, and to work with the needs of the community. Large chains can hold a town hostage by threatening to leave if not given what they want by officials.

Unique items offered by specialty shops add to the flavor and distinction of a town's character. Independent businesses can afford to choose products that appeal to their locale. They are often the only outlets for those special, locally-made, or hard-to-find items that can range from soaps and candles to radical books and music. So this Christmas, and the rest of the year, resist the urge to spend your dollars at the large out-of-town chain stores. Support the local guy, your neighbor, and preserve the individuality and economic health of your town.

Give the gift that keeps on giving this holiday season by buying them their very own ownership share in Weaver Street Market. A one-time investment, which varies in price depending on the number of the adults in the household, gives a number of benefits to each owner, in addition to providing social, environmental, and economic benefits to the entire community. Owners receive a 5% discount on many items in the store, which returns on average about a 40% return-on-investment EVERY SINGLE YEAR! In today's economic climate, what better way to help make delicious, natural, locally-grown food affordable for your nearest and dearest?

Still not convinced? There are dozens of reasons to become an owner! To purchase your gift ownership, stop by the customer service desk in Carrboro or ask a cashier at our Hillsborough and Southern Village stores. Children's Book Review
Jo, Flo and Yolanda
By Carol de Poix
Illustrated by Stephanie Sove Ney

Jo, Flo and Yolanda by local author Carol de Poix tells a simple family story without succumbing to the stereotypes often found in young children's books. The story introduces Jo, Flo, and Yolanda, triplets who, while they have much in common, are also different in many ways. One likes to read and wants to be a writer, one plays sports and dreams of going pro, and one hopes to use her love of cooking to open a restaurant.

Originally published in 1973, the book's title characters were intended to break from traditional gender roles, but the story goes further to present an original and refreshing family portrait: Dad works a night shift and comes home to make everyone breakfast, the family lives in a city apartment, Mom rides the subway to work, and the girls help their big brother make dinner and set the table before Mom gets home in the evenings.

The book doesn't attempt to knock the reader over the head with this alternative family scenario. Instead, the story flows along delightfully as the girls and their family are introduced. With its clear writing, Jo, Flo and Yolanda simply shows the reader a loving family and their city lifestyle.

This book is available for $6.95 in the book section at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.

PLANT@Breeze Farm
The Next Generation of Farmers - People Learning Agriculture Now for Tomorrow
Needs a tractor!

PLANT@Breeze Farm is an incubator program aimed at developing new farmers. Classes for new farmers run in January and February, teaching students sustainable farming while also building a business plan and a crop plan. Graduating students can implement their plans on land provided for by Breeze or on their own land. This program is a crucial step in creating a sustainable agricultural chain from the current generation of farmers to the next generation.

Col. William H. Breeze and his family donated the Breeze Farm property located in Northern Orange County, to NC State's College of Agriculture and Life sciences. A team of experts from the Orange County Cooperative Extension, the Orange County Economic Development Commission, the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, NC State University, NC A&T University, University Field Laboratories and the Agricultural Research Service designed and implemented the program earlier this year.

With a number of local farmers expected to retire, it is very important to have a program like PLANT@Breeze helping a new generation learn the skills necessary to sustain our local food system. Local food production is a way of ensuring community self-reliance.

Right now, the PLANT@Breeze program desperately needs a tractor. Can you help Weaver Street Market raise $5,000 by January 1 to help buy a tractor for the next generation of farmers? Tractors are used year round for soil prep, soil tillage, mulch application, seeding of cover crops, disking, bush hogging, drilling post holes and more.

The Tractor Fund is a part of our Hope for the Holidays fundraising where part of your purchase of selected Hope for the Holiday items goes toward the purchase of the tractor.

Get a Green Smile

No matter how much you use recycled or long-lasting products, or shop for minimal packaging, it seems like there are disposable containers you just can't avoid. Bathroom toiletries are one culprit—they all seem to come made of and packaged in plastic, and they only last a few months.

Now there are two easy things you and your teeth can do to help the environment. Eco Dent's "Gentle Floss" dental floss comes in a recyclable cardboard box! The floss itself is wrapped in a little plastic bag to preserve freshness, so there is a small amount of "installation" required. Each box has 100 yards of floss, more than the usual amount (30 to 50 yards) in plastic dental floss boxes, and when it runs out, you can recycle the box. Find Gentle Floss at our Carrboro and Hillsborough locations.

Preserve's recycled, recyclable toothbrushes are a great way to avoid adding a toothbrush to the landfill every few months. The plastic toothbrushes are made of 100% recycled materials (except for the bristles, which are new). Even the paper label inside is made of recycled materials and environmentally friendly inks. The case has small holes in it, allowing it to double as a travel case. And both toothbrush and case are recyclable: you can download postage-paid mailing labels from the company's website and return the brushes and cases to the company.

As an added bonus, the Preserve toothbrushes are on sale in December! So stock up now, and be sure to get a few for stocking stuffers—what better way to make people smile?
