Thank you for your loyalty
Running a successful co-op puts me in mind of the runaway charioteer who straddles the backs of three horses. With reins to each he struggles to keep his balance and guide the team to the finish line as the winner. One horse is driving customers' needs and wants, another is driving what's good for the planet, the third is driving our employees' and vendors' needs, being profitable is what keeps us balanced on top, and our board vision guides us to our target. It's a balancing act for sure, but it's also exciting and rewarding to be a part of a business that cares so deeply about so much. More

Authentic Food Header
Thank you for your loyalty continued
As the tumultuous year 2008 draws to a close, we at Weaver Street Market would like to acknowledge and thank our owners, our employees, and our vendors for helping us to grow into a successful business that is poised to serve our community for many years to come.

Throughout this last year, sales to our owners have grown to well over 50% at all our locations. By choosing to shop at your local co-op instead of a national chain you ensure that your values will continue to have an avenue for expression as well as creating a stronger local economy.

For twenty years WSM has been building relationships with local farmers and producers to create a sustainable and safe local food supply. Let's all say thanks to the farmers and foodies who grow, produce, and provide us with an amazing abundance of local, fair trade, and high quality sustenance.

This year was also one of extraordinary growth for Weaver Street Market as we opened not one, but two new facilities. Our employees worked diligently and hard to transition locations and job duties while maintaining quality service and high production levels.

Weaver Street Market is now positioned to continue on with its mission of creating a vibrant, sustainable commercial center for its owners and potential owners. Thank you for coming along for the ride and providing us with the impetus, the means, and the motive to keep going.

"keep the home guys going"

How many shopping days are left? As the pressure mounts to fill your list of Christmas wishes, take a moment to stop and think about the impact of the money you will spend this Holiday season. Through your spending you have the power to affect many lives. When you choose to buy from a locally-owned business, your money works for you and your community.

Locally-owned businesses support other smaller businesses such as accountants, architects, computer techs, lawyers and designers. They can offer a wider selection of independently-made items or goods made by small local producers. Chain stores frequently import building designs, graphics and advertising from other locations. Payroll, taxes, and other administrative tasks are shipped out to a headquarters far away. Not to mention the pure profit dollars that simply flow out of your community, leaving behind an absentee-owned business that does not care how its actions impact your area. A locally-owned business is more likely to stay during up times and down, and to work with the needs of the community. Large chains can hold a town hostage by threatening to leave if not given what they want by officials.

Unique items offered by specialty shops add to the flavor and distinction of a town's character. Independent businesses can afford to choose products that appeal to their locale. They are often the only outlets for those special, locally-made, or hard-to-find items that can range from soaps and candles to radical books and music. So this Christmas, and the rest of the year, resist the urge to spend your dollars at the large out-of-town chain stores. Support the local guy, your neighbor, and preserve the individuality and economic health of your town.

Farmers' Markets
Hillsborough Farmers' Market will Move to Home Depot

The Hillsborough Farmers' Market had its beginning in 1987 in the Southern States parking lot and since that time has held their market on various County and private properties within Historic Downtown Hillsborough. For the last 12 years SunTrust Bank has let them use their parking lot in the center of town. Beginning in 2009, the Hillsborough Farmers' Market will be held at The Home Depot on NC 86 & I-85.

Paul Reil of the Leadership Team states that "while the HFM doesn't want to leave its long-time home in the downtown historic district we realize we are continually growing and need more space for vendors as well as customers. As a plus there will also be plenty of room for on-site parking at the Home Depot location." The winter market will be held the first and third Saturday from 10-noon beginning on January 3rd. The Saturday market will be held from 8-Noon beginning March 21, 2009 and Wednesdays from 4-7 pm beginning in May. There will be music entertainment from 10-12, activities for kids as well as guest chefs and special event days.

Beverly Blythe of the Leadership Team said that the market is fortunate to have so many customers and friends. "We've been blessed for over two decades with an outstanding and wonderful relationship with the Hillsborough community, a community that includes the individual, the local businesses, and the visitors to our town". She also feels "the market will continue to grow and build on the 23 year tradition that we have all shared and built together."

If anyone is interested in being a vendor for 2009, the application and guidelines are available on line here or call 732-8315.

Championing a Better World
Help buy a Tractor
PLANT@Breeze Farm
The Next Generation of Farmers - People Learning Agriculture Now for Tomorrow
Needs a tractor!

PLANT@Breeze Farm is an incubator program aimed at developing new farmers. Classes for new farmers run in January and February, teaching students sustainable farming while also building a business plan and a crop plan. Graduating students can implement their plans on land provided for by Breeze or on their own land. This program is a crucial step in creating a sustainable agricultural chain from the current generation of farmers to the next generation.

Col. William H. Breeze and his family donated the Breeze Farm property located in Northern Orange County, to NC State's College of Agriculture and Life sciences. A team of experts from the Orange County Cooperative Extension, the Orange County Economic Development Commission, the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, NC State University, NC A&T University, University Field Laboratories and the Agricultural Research Service designed and implemented the program earlier this year.

With a number of local farmers expected to retire, it is very important to have a program like PLANT@Breeze helping a new generation learn the skills necessary to sustain our local food system. Local food production is a way of ensuring community self-reliance.

Right now, the PLANT@Breeze program desperately needs a tractor. Can you help Weaver Street Market raise $5,000 by January 1 to help buy a tractor for the next generation of farmers? Tractors are used year round for soil prep, soil tillage, mulch application, seeding of cover crops, disking, bush hogging, drilling post holes and more.

The Tractor Fund is a part of our Hope for the Holidays fundraising where part of your purchase of selected Hope for the Holiday items goes toward the purchase of the tractor. In addition to your purchases at WSM, you may choose to make a direct tax-deductible donation to Orange County Cooperative Extension with a "Breeze Farm" note in the memo line. Donations can be sent to Beverly Shuford, Cooperative Extension, POB 8181, Hillsborough, NC 27278.

Holiday Leftovers: Where to Bring Packing Material

This past holiday season you may have received a gift or two swaddled in bubble wrap or nestled in styrofoam packing peanuts or air packs or one of the many other packing materials that cannot be readily recycled in Orange County. Most of these are readily reusable by one of many local mailing houses. The Orange County Solid Waste Management Department maintains a list on their website: go here or call for more information (968-2788).

On the website, find the list using the drop down menu at the top of the page (entitled "How do I recycle..."). Packing material re-users are listed under "Packaging" and "Styrofoam." While you're at it, use the list to learn about recycling everything from Aerosol Cans to Yogurt Tubs—dozens of recyclable and re-usable items are listed.

Help keep the holidays environmentally friendly—turn in that packing material and give it another chance to serve.
