| Bubblies for New Year's Eve New Year's Eve is the day to sparkle and we've got Sparklers for all tastes and budgets. Sparkling wine is, simply put, wine that bubbles when you pour it into a glass. This is a pretty boring description for a wine that is anything but. Effervescent, lively, frothy, explosive, elegant, I could go on and on, but there's only one day left until 2009, so I'll spare you the rest of my musings. More |

| Help buy a Tractor |
PLANT@Breeze FarmThe Next Generation of Farmers - People Learning Agriculture Now for Tomorrow Needs a tractor! PLANT@Breeze Farm is an incubator program aimed at developing new farmers. Classes for new farmers run in January and February, teaching students sustainable farming while also building a business plan and a crop plan. Graduating students can implement their plans on land provided for by Breeze or on their own land. This program is a crucial step in creating a sustainable agricultural chain from the current generation of farmers to the next generation. Col. William H. Breeze and his family donated the Breeze Farm property located in Northern Orange County, to NC State's College of Agriculture and Life sciences. A team of experts from the Orange County Cooperative Extension, the Orange County Economic Development Commission, the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, NC State University, NC A&T University, University Field Laboratories and the Agricultural Research Service designed and implemented the program earlier this year. With a number of local farmers expected to retire, it is very important to have a program like PLANT@Breeze helping a new generation learn the skills necessary to sustain our local food system. Local food production is a way of ensuring community self-reliance.
Right now, the PLANT@Breeze program desperately needs a tractor. Can you help Weaver Street Market raise $5,000 by January 6 to help buy a tractor for the next generation of farmers? Tractors are used year round for soil prep, soil tillage, mulch application, seeding of cover crops, disking, bush hogging, drilling post holes and more. The Tractor Fund is a part of our Hope for the Holidays fundraising where part of your purchase of selected Hope for the Holiday items goes toward the purchase of the tractor. In addition to your purchases at WSM, you may choose to make a direct tax-deductible donation to Orange County Cooperative Extension with a "Breeze Farm" note in the memo line. Donations can be sent to Beverly Shuford, Cooperative Extension, POB 8181, Hillsborough, NC 27278. |

Recycle those batteries—or buy rechargeable!Batteries may seem small and harmless, but they contain "heavy metals" like mercury, lead, cadmium, and nickel, which can contaminate the environment when they are thrown into landfills. Metals can leach into soil and water. When incinerated, some metals might be released into the air or concentrated in the ash resulting from the burning process. Household batteries should always be recycled! For your convenience, Weaver Street Market has bins for recycling household batteries. The bins are short and blue: in Hillsborough, the bin is located inside, against the front of the store near the cafe and sink; in Carrboro, look for it outside the front door, along with some taller recycling bins; in Southern Village, look inside along the front wall to your left as you enter the store. You can also recycle batteries at Orange County's Solid Waste Convenience Centers. (Note: these are different from the 24-hour Recycling Drop-off Sites.) For hours and locations, visit their website here or call for more information (968-2788). Want to stop using up batteries altogether? Go rechargeable—rechargeable batteries and chargers are now available at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro and Hillsborough. |
