By Joe Yancey, WSM Wellness Manager
This year I'm cutting to the chase and talking about my favorite product for keeping you from catching a cold. Wellness Formula is America's number one immune formula because it is effective at addressing body systems, not just symptoms. Wellness Formula goes deep to the root of body system imbalances by supporting interlocking components of the system, including mucous membranes, cell-mediated immunity, and humoral immunity. It also addresses interrelated body systems that impact winter health: antioxidant defense, stress response, and the respiratory system. More

Strategies for Colds continued
Immune system components addressed by Wellness Formula include protective barriers such as the skin and mucous membranes, cell mediated immunity involving T-lymphocytes and thymus support, and humoral (body fluid) immunity, consisting of B-lymphocytes and macrophage interactions. Immune system support ingredients in the formula include: astragalus, boneset, isatis, propolis, selenium, zinc, vitamins A & C, beta carotine.

Our nasal passages, sinuses, throat, and bronchial tubes are protected by mucous membranes, and moist layers of connective tissue that are the first line of immune defense. Cleansing the mucous membranes is an important part of winterizing your immune system. Vitamin A is necessary for the secretion of mucin (a constituent of mucus) in the intestinal mucous membranes and for the integrity of connective tissue. The formula includes vitamin C, mullein, copper and zinc to support the integrity of blood vessels and membranes as well as herbs to cleanse the mucus membranes.

Wellness Formula addresses the problem of too much mucus with herbs that support the body's clearing of excess mucus in the upper respiratory system.

Science now shows that emotional and physiological stress significantly impacts the immune system. Wellness Formula supports the body's overall response to stress with Siberian ginseng, astragalus, and the minerals calcium and magnesium.

Finally, since white blood cells generate free radicals, highly reactive molecules that can damage the very white blood cells that produce them, Wellness Formula includes antioxidant support.

The greatest selling point for Wellness Formula is that it works. In the 27 years that I've been in the natural products biz no other product works as consistently at keeping folks from getting sick. Also, since Wellness Formula has such a comprehensive collection of ingredients, it saves you money because you don't have to buy dozens of products and guess about dosage.

The protocol is simple: take one to two tablets daily to protect/bolster immunity, take three tablets every three hours at the first signs that you are catching something. Wellness Formula takes the guesswork out of what you should buy this winter to keep you and your family well.

Wellness Formula is on sale through the end of January.

Benefits of Grass-fed Beef
Grass-fed beef is on the cutting edge of high quality nutrition.

Lower in fat and calories. A 6-oz. steak from a grass-finished steer can have 100 fewer calories than a 6-oz. steak from a grain-fed steer.

Extra Omega-3s. Meat from grass-fed animals has two to four times more omega-3 fatty acids than meat from grain- fed animals.

4x higher in Vitamin E: In addition to being higher in omega-3s and CLA, meat from grass-fed animals is also higher in vitamin E. In humans, vitamin E is linked with a lower risk of heart disease and cancer. This potent antioxidant may also have anti-aging properties. Most Americans are deficient in vitamin E.

Vegetarian Feed. Grass is the healthiest, most natural food for cows. No hormones, antibiotics, or animal by-products are fed to the cows.

Humanely raised and processed: Humane living conditions and careful oversight at time of slaughter increase the quality of life for livestock, resulting in reduced residual stress hormones in the meat.

Grass-fed beef: The healthiest possible beef for your family, and healthier for the environment as well. We don't sell meat from animals raised with antibiotics or synthetic hormones.

Heart Healthy Oatmeal
What's so good about oatmeal? Turns out just about everything. Not only is oatmeal a good source of fiber, but also that fiber can help reduce LDL cholesterol. Oatmeal is also low on the Glycemic index, so it can help even out blood sugar. Wow, two great reasons to start your day with oatmeal.

How to cook oatmeal. Cook oatmeal in the same ratio of water to oats as rice, 2:1. That means two cups of water and one cup of oatmeal. This will make two cups of cooked oatmeal.

For rolled oats simply place water, oats, and a sprinkle of salt in a pot, bring to a boil, turn down to simmer and let cook for 10 minutes.

To reduce the cooking time of steel cut oats (and eliminate prep time in the morning) place oats and water in pot the night before and let soak till morning.

For more protein, cook with skim milk instead of water, or serve with turkey bacon.

You can top oatmeal with just about anything you like: raisins, currants, walnuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, jam, or fresh fruit.

This winter do something good for you heart, eat oatmeal! Weaver Street Market has organic and conventional rolled oats and steel cut oats in the bulk department.

Open Mic in Hillsborough
New Event at Hillsborough store!

Greetings from the Weave to the north! Those of us who made the pioneering trip from Carrboro don't see you so much anymore, but we hope you didn't forget about us.

Just in case your Monday evenings are as quiet as ours, we're inviting you to our new acoustic musicians' open-mic night, every Monday from 6:30-8:30.

The first event was on January 5th and was a packed house (albeit a snug packed house) headlined by the incandescent beauty of Red Rover's Tim and Susan Wells, playing fiddle and banjo tunes for a varied and appreciative audience. We expect to see y'all (especially those of you with songs to play) some Monday night very soon.
