Today is Mardi Gras! What are we doing here instead of down in New Orleans celebrating? Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, is the day before Ash Wednesday when for Catholics, lent begins. Somewhere in the depths of the past, Mardi Gras was the last day for indulging and celebrating before the stringent abstinence of lent. Now, Mardi Gras is celebrated in and around New Orleans with parades, parties, and balls. Since we are not in New Orleans today, Weaver Street Market has two authentic Louisiana recipes guaranteed to bring the flavor of New Orleans to your house for dinner. The first recipe is Red Beans and Rice, traditionaly eaten on Mondays since it is a relatively cheap meal to make after you've spent your paycheck on drinking and partying all weekend. More

Red Bean & Rice
from Jaye Kreller of Tony Hall and Associates. Jaye grew up in Westwego on the west bank of the Mississippi across from New Orleans. She was a childhood friend of WSM manager James Watts and is the partner of WSM employee, Cat Moleski

Ingredients:
1 lb Red Kidney Beans
2 sm or 1 med onion chopped finely
1/8 cup pickled Jalapeno peppers chopped
1/8 cup of juice from the pickled Jalapeno pepper jar
1 tbsp of Louisiana hot sauce
1/4 cup Worstercestershire sauce
1 tbsp salt
1/2 lb hot or smoked sausage (optional)
Local pork sausage is on sale this week!

Soak beans over night in a crock-pot with water to cover by one inch. After the beans have soaked, remove 1 cup of beans and put in a blender with 1/2 cup water. Blend into a paste. Return to crock-pot and turn on to high. Add all remaining ingredients except the sausage and cook for six hours. One hour before serving, add sausage.

The second recipe is Shrimp á la Creole, an elegant and warming dish perfect for these chilly nights! Fresh shrimp is on sale this week!
from Windy Willer, WSM's Training and Development Manager. Windy has worked at Weaver Street Market for over ten years and grew up in Opelausas, Louisiana.

Ingredients:
2 tbsp olive oil
2 medium onions chopped
1 chopped bell pepper
1 minced jalapeño
1 bunch of chopped parsley (some reserved for garnish)
1/2 cup dry white wine
4 cups chopped canned tomatoes (fire roasted are great)
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 cup tomato sauce
salt to taste
1/2 tsp crushed dried mint
Tabasco
2 pounds raw peeled shrimp

In a large high-walled skillet, heat the oil on medium-high heat. Sauté the onions, peppers, and most of the parsley until the onions are clear. Add the rest of the ingredients except the shrimp and heat to a boil. Lower the heat, cover and simmer until the tomatoes fall apart: about an hour. Add the shrimp and continue to simmer, stirring occasionally for 30 minutes. Serve over fluffy cooked white rice and garnish with reserved chopped parsley.

Milton's Crackers - Whole Wheat & Multigrain
on sale - $2.99, 10oz, regularly $3.69

by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer
We all have our favorites brands. Sometimes the preference is based on the actual food in question (yogurt: thick or thin?) and sometimes it is based on ethical considerations (the Fair Trade chocolate bar, or the one that donates profits to endangered animals?) But sometimes, picking the Garden Burger over the Boca Burger is just a matter of habit.

Recently, though, I've been paying more attention to a new criteria: what's on sale? And I've begun to discover new brands that are just as good as the ones I've been buying. Last weekend, I discovered Milton's Crackers.

I'm a fan of the "squishy" kind of cracker. Now I know technically there are not squishy crackers — all crackers are crunchy. But there are thin crackers like Nut Thins and stone ground wafers (all crunch), and then there are double-wide crackers that have harder outside layers and a soft (a.k.a. squishy) center. I've always bought Kashi or Late July.

But last Sunday, I was late to work and needed a snack that I could eat easily while working. I sped into Weaver Street Market in Hillsborough and headed straight to the Grab 'N' Go case. When I chose Guacamole, I then needed to get something to scoop it with, and I'm not really a corn chip fan, so I headed for the crackers. Since Milton's was on sale, I grabbed a box. And voila, I found a new favorite.

Milton's Crackers in Whole Wheat and Multigrain flavors are on sale through February, so give them a try!

Here's your update from the wilds of Northern Orange County... we were trying to get Garrison Keillor to narrate this, but he had a prior commitment.

Audience: The Lounge is cosy and the crowd is nice... a lot like your house, but with live music. Our casa is your casa. Don't be a stranger! We've had a thrilling diversity of artists so far and are very excited about the treats we have in store for you in the next few weeks.

Musicians: Come early! Come often! Don't think your distinct style is not for us... we're very polite and respectful and we want to include all of you in our big Lilac hug. Perhaps most persuasively for all you musician-types: There is beer in the store... you can buy it and drink it while you play. It's a win-win proposition.

Also, while we're on the subject, the Lilac Lounge needs your help: Donations of old floor lamps or rugs for the beautification of the space are welcomed. Eclectic decor is our bag, so don't be afraid of clashing. Contact Pete at the Hillsborough store: 919 245 5050.

Andrea Wuerth, a political scientist who most recently was director of the microfinance program at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. will be speaking about the development approach known as microfinance. This is the provision of financial services (credit, savings, insurance, remittance services, etc.) to the working poor, which has spread throughout Latin America, and a broad range of programs now exists in most countries. She will discuss the development of the microfinance sector in Latin America in general and share her experiences organizing university student trips to study microfinance in Honduras and Peru. She hopes a lively discussion will follow!

North Carolina may be increasingly involved in microfinancing, thanks to the recent visit by Mohammed Yunis, founder of the Nobel Prize winning Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. "North Carolina popped up on Grameen's radar because of the tremendous support from state organizations — more so than from any other state."

Ag Summit Summary
11th Annual Orange County Agricultural Summit
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

The 11th Annual Orange County Agricultural Summit was held February 9th in Hillsborough. A crowd of farmers, interested public, and elected officials gathered to hear presentations on farm-related topics, as well as updates on ongoing projects. The event ended with a locally grown lunch of pork barbeque and beef meatloaf, sweet potatoes, collards, hush puppies, salad, and apple cobbler with Maple View ice cream. And the county's recycling department kept the event waste-free!

Many common themes emerged as the speakers presented information on the different aspects of agriculture: Orange County has a great local food system, and many plans in the works will strengthen it further. Agriculture, in addition to being a large source of income in our state, is a steady source. And there are many creative ways for farmers to improve their farms and make extra money.

Local Farms / Local Art: An Art Exhibit Celebrating the 14th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour

This spring, Panzanella and Weaver Street Market's Hillsborough store will host a juried exhibit to explore what North Carolina artists create when the inspiration is local farming. Farmers and their families, crops, animals, landscapes, farm buildings and equipment are all possible subjects. This is our second year presenting the Local Farms/Local Art Exhibit. It will be displayed in Panzanella and the Hillsborough Weaver Street Market from April 5 through June 8, 2009.
