By Elizabeth Friend, Contributing Writer
If you've made it this far, congratulations! March is the beginning of the end for winter — a month that hints at better things to come. After soldiering through January and weathering the fickle winds of February, celebrate the coming of spring with a wide array of sweet treats to suit any taste. On March 14, gather your cerebral pals around something round to celebrate properly Pi Day (and Albert Einstein's birthday) with a delicious slice of, well, pie. Stick around until March 17, St Patrick's Day, when we'll march out our velvety rich Irish Cream Cheesecake, flavored with Bailey's Irish Cream Liquor and Jameson's whiskey, and a traditional chocolate orange quick bread made with Guinness stout. It's Almost Spring - Hang in There and Stay Healthy with Emergen-C

Your neighbor on the bus is coughing. Partially used tissues pile up on your officemate's desk. Everyone has a cold, and you're next — there's no avoiding it. Or is there?

On the bottom shelf in the Wellness aisle are small blue boxes of Emergen-C, packets of Vitamin C powder with added B vitamins (for non-caffeinated energy), mineral complexes, antioxidants, and other micronutrients. One packet mixed with 4 to 6 ounces of water makes a fizzing, fruit-flavored drink that protects your good health and makes you feel good! Take them when you're worried about getting sick, when you're traveling, or when you have to bike to work and don't have time for breakfast.

Buy just one packet to sample, or buy a whole box at their new Every Day Low Prices! Emergen-C comes in a variety of fruit flavors in its Original Formula, as well as in newer formulas like "Heart Health," the sports drink "Electro-Mix," and low calorie "Lite." Check out all the flavors and formulas on the Emergen-C website here. (Click on the orange boxes along the bottom to view different categories — the flavors available in each category will appear in the central box.) If you see a flavor that Weaver Street Market doesn't carry, we can special order a box for you.

Don't start spring with a cold. As the last few bitter days pass, keep your vitamins plentiful and your energy boosted with Emergen-C.
Celebrate Purim with Hand-made Hamantaschen
The Jewish holiday of Purim, this year on March 9-10th, celebrates a victory of the Jews in the 6th century BCE, when they lived under Persian rule. When Haman, the advisor of the Persian king, plotted to have all the Jews killed, the king's wife Esther revealed her true identity as a Jew and stopped the killing.

The traditional treats of Purim are Hamantaschen, fruit, seed, and nut-filled triangular cookies. The name derives from montashn, the name for a generic filled cookie, and the name of the historic villain Haman. Some like to think of the cookies as representing Haman's hat, while others say the cookies are his ears, which fell off during his execution!

Try our new Chocolate Pecan Hamantaschen and Apricot Walnut Hamantaschen, available now through March 10th.

Here's your update from the wilds of Northern Orange County...we were trying to get Garrison Keillor to narrate this, but he had a prior commitment.

Audience: The Lounge is cosy and the crowd is nice...a lot like your house, but with live music. Our casa is your casa. Don't be a stranger! We've had a thrilling diversity of artists so far and are very excited about the treats we have in store for you in the next few weeks.

Musicians: Come early! Come often! Don't think your distinct style is not for us... we're very polite and respectful and we want to include all of you in our big Lilac hug. Perhaps most persuasively for all you musician-types: There is beer in the store... you can buy it and drink it while you play. It's a win-win proposition.

Also, while we're on the subject, the Lilac Lounge needs your help: Donations of old floor lamps or rugs for the beautification of the space are welcomed. Eclectic decor is our bag, so don't be afraid of clashing. Contact Pete at the Hillsborough store: 919 245 5050.

Lilac Lounge at Weaver Street Market, Hillsborough every Thursday night 6:30-8:30

Our esteemed guests in the Lounge for the next few weeks:

March 5th: Doctor Oakroot

March 12th: Red Rover
(Tim and Susan Wells, Orange County's Tammy and George without the domestic turmoil)
March 19th: The Whompers
(Stormingly loud harmonica and fiddle assault with a brash take on the traditional)

Celebrate your toenails, your skin, and your self!
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer
Every spring I celebrate the return of warm weather by painting my toenails. No more sticky socks and binding, close-toed shoes; it's time to break out the sandals for the next six months! My toes want to celebrate in style, so I pick a good spring green nail polish and dress them up.

This year, they'll be going green in more ways than one: I've made the switch to Weaver Street Market's "No Miss" nail polish. Running out of my years old bottle of nail polish remover motivated me: if I had to buy more, I wanted to do it right, but I despaired of finding a locally-owned business selling eco-friendly nail polish remover. Then I saw it right in our own store! The No Miss Polish Remover is made of fruit acids and acids from lichens with no acetone, ethyl acetate, harsh odor, or "cruelty."

The trouble was, it only works on environmentally-friendly nail polish; the cruelty-free No Miss nail polish has no formaldehyde, toluene, or dyes. So I'm sending my high school collection of nail polish to the Free Market, and collecting new colors one bottle at a time, starting with "Tampa Teal."

The nail products are found in the back of the Wellness Department in Carrboro, right next to the carousel of makeup testers. Not being much of a makeup person, my head swims at the sight of rows of bottles of facial wash, facial cleanser, facial toner, and facial lotion. I'm particularly entranced by a bottle called "Lait démaquillant rose sauvage" until I realize it's in French, and I grow more entranced reading "Wild Rose" in all the different languages on the bottle: wilde roos, rosa silvestre, rosa canina, vildros.

Whether you wear makeup or not, the Wellness aisles in all our stores are a good place to poke around if you're looking for a way to treat yourself. There's a rack of tiny vials of essential oils, along with the "Aromatherapy Room Diffuser" to send them out into your house. Tapers and votive candles can set the scene while you take a relaxing shower with your "Loofah Bath Mitt" or "Exfoliating Hydro Glove." Brighten your day with Burt's Bees Lip Shimmers in flavors like champagne, fig, cocoa, nutmeg, and merlot.

You may have to hunt around between the practical stuff (toothpaste, shampoo) to find the fun stuff, but even the essentials can be enticing since everything comes in appealing flavors. Look for Clearly Natural Glycerine Soaps on sale in March, in alluring scents like Cucumber, Rainforest, and Honeysuckle.

Need a reason to celebrate? How about International Women's Day on March 8th? Begun in Europe in 1911 as a day of rallies to campaign for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, and hold public office, the day has spread worldwide with hundreds of events to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Local groups choose themes to reflect their local issues, while the United Nation chooses a global theme — this year's is "Women and men united to end violence against women and girls." (Read more about International Women's Day at the website, here.)

So whatever your reason to celebrate, pamper yourself today with healthy products from the Wellness aisle.

Local Farms / Local Art: An Art Exhibit Celebrating the 14th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour

This spring, Panzanella and Weaver Street Market's Hillsborough store will host a juried exhibit to explore what North Carolina artists create when the inspiration is local farming. Farmers and their families, crops, animals, landscapes, farm buildings and equipment are all possible subjects. This is our second year presenting the Local Farms/Local Art Exhibit. It will be displayed in Panzanella and the Hillsborough Weaver Street Market from April 5 through June 8, 2009.
