Locally owned in Pittsboro, Kerala Curry produces high quality, authentic South Indian curry products, made with owner Ann Varkey's personal recipes. Frozen entrees like Vegetable Biryani or Chicken Tikki Masala are 'heat and serve.' Try chutneys from tomato to mango to coriander -- pay attention to the 'heat' rating, because these are spicy. For those who like a little more kitchen time, buy a curry or masala sauce and add your own meat or vegetables. It's like healthy, delicious Hamburger Helper, only a thousand times better. More

Neti Pots

Imagine you go to the doctor with an ache in your hand.

"I can't work," you say. "And it's keeping me up at night."

She takes your temperature and then pokes your hand in a few places asking, "Does it hurt here? How about here?" Then she scrawls some notes on her forms. She reaches into the cupboard and pulls out a small blackboard. Handing it to you, she says, "Scrape your fingernails down this once a day, and your hand will feel all better."

You might think, "Ugh, fingernails on a blackboard!" But you'd also probably think, "Great! No costly medications! And no chemical side effects!"

That's how I feel about using my neti pot. After years of spring pollen allergy torture, I've discovered a practically-free, all natural way to keep symptoms to a minimum. For those who've not heard of it, a neti pot is used for "nasal irrigation," a personal hygiene practice in which the nasal cavity is washed to flush out excess mucus and debris while moistening the mucus membranes of the nose and sinuses. It has been practiced in India for centuries as one of the disciplines of yoga. I use it in the evening — when I'm inside for the night — and wash that day's pollen out of my nose.

Probably due to a cruel older sister who held me under water at the beach in the summer, I can't quite get comfortable with the feeling of salt water flowing through my nasal cavities. But relative to lying in bed, unable to breath freely, it's an easy, cheap, all natural cure.

The key to using a neti pot is accurate measuring. Fresh water or too-salty water will cause a burning sensation in your nose. If you measure fairly well, though, you won't feel a thing. Also, be sure to use non-iodized salt! The recipe is 8 oz warm water, 1/4 tsp salt. I usually mix up just half of this, using a shot glass (2 oz) to measure the water. I stir with my finger to make sure the salt is dissolved and test the water temperature.

If you need aid visualizing this, videos abound on YouTube. I liked "Neti Pot How-To" (here), although his recipe differed from the one given by Ancient Secrets, maker of neti pots. (Also, my computer has no sound so I can't be sure of what he was saying; but the visuals were stunning.) Many more videos are posted with dubious titles like "Gavin and Jason Flush Their Noses!" and "Neti Pot Challenge." (The Ancient Secrets website has a video posted as well, but it mostly consists of a man talking. Watch it here.)

If you're ready to give it a try, now's the time. Ancient Secrets neti pots are on sale through March at all three Weaver Street Market locations! - Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

Volunteer for the 14th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour
The sustainable farming and food movement is stronger than ever and a big part of that has been getting people out onto farms to see things firsthand. We could not have accomplished this without the help of volunteers. We would love to have you join us in 2009 for one day of volunteering.

Here are the details:

The tour will be Saturday and Sunday April 25 and 26, 2009
It is 1 PM to 6 PM both days
The founding co-sponsors are Weaver Street Market and The Carolina Farm Stewardship Association
Volunteering is easy — you check people in when they arrive and help the farmer as needed

Volunteers receive:

• the pleasure and fun of helping support sustainable farming
• behind-the-scenes knowledge of a specific farm
• fun with kids
• a cool tour T-shirt
• a free button to tour farms the other day of the tour
• our enduring appreciation!

If you would like to volunteer this year, email Fred Broadwell at the Carolina Farm Stewardship or call him at 919-542-2402 (office) or 919-943-1068 (cell). Once again, thank you so much for considering this service! Recruit others and spread the word about volunteering!

As an incentive to commit to volunteering early (which helps out a lot), if you commit to volunteering by March 22, we will enter you in a drawing for one of six $25 gift certificates to Weaver Street Market. Replying soon also gives you a better chance of getting assigned to a specific farm of your choice.

Farmers' Market
South Estes Farmers Market going strong
by Cat Moleski, Contributing Writer
I zipped over to the South Estes Farmers Market to pick up some Fickle Creek eggs and return my empty cartons and discovered a wonder mix of other tempting items. In addition to eggs, Fickle Creek also offers lamb, pork sausage, bacon, and whole ground chicken for dog food. Coon Rock Farm was there with turnips, radishes, lettuce, spinach, pork chops, spare ribs, lamb, chicken, and pasture-raised beef.

Twin Spruce Farms had worm compost. Call John Blythe at 919,732.0822 if your're interested in bulk worm compost. Southport Seafood had fresh grouper and NC shrimp for sale. La Spiga di Grano had homemade Italian pasta, biscotti and baked goods made with 100% organic unbleached flour. Dancing Pine's Farm had lettuce, arugula, kale, turnips, and scallions.

The Soap Kettle has teamed up with Piedmont Biofuel to bring you homemade soap - dish, hand, laundry and dog! The Rabbit Patch has beautiful handmade baskets perfect for Easter. Larry's was there with his famous Cheesecake, turnovers, pretzels and biscotti. Contrarian Farm had pesticide-free brussel sprouts and leaves, radishes, eggs, and delicious baby carrot bunches.

Find the South Estes Farmers' Market inside University Mall near a Southern Season on Saturday March 21. On Saturday April 4 they will move back outside to the parking lot.

Biofuels
By Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

Everyone wants to help the environment. We recycle. We compost. We bring our own containers to the bulk bins at the co-op. We buy green power. We go to the Farmers' Markets. We sign up for e-bills. There are lots of little ways to help.

But there are some "big ticket" items that take more commitment and courage. Alternative transportation is one of the hardest. Sure riding a bike is fun, but bikes and public transportation are not always an option. But here in the Triangle we have an option that many places don't: biodiesel made right in our backyard.

Piedmont Biofuels in Pittboro makes and sells biodiesel, a fuel made from oils like vegetable oil that burns cleaner than conventional fuels. There's been controversy about the feasibility of widespread use of biofuels and how it affects food prices. This isn't a problem when you buy from our local company, where they're committed to finding sustainable ways to make their fuel. They began by processing soybean oil, but switched a few years ago to waste poultry fat, something the Piedmont has plenty of. They're now using waste vegetable oil as well.

Members of Piedmont Biofuels Co-op can buy fuel at the Pittboro plant or at locations in Carrboro, Hillsborough, Durham, and other nearby towns. What's surprising to many is that any diesel car can run on biodiesel — there's no conversion process. (Other cars can be converted with a kit.)

Interested in learning more about biodiesel? Visit Piedmont Biofuels website here http://www.biofuels.coop/ and sign up for one of their monthly Industrial Plant tours.
Stagg Creek Farm: New to the Piedmont Farm Tour!
Freshwater Prawns

Like so many of our farms in North Carolina, Stagg Creek Farm is a family operation. Jeff and Cindie Kirby are the current generation farming land farmed by Jeff's father. Their son, Jack, also manages a few acres of his own on their ninety-acre spread in Mebane.

Recently, when they discovered that the land next to theirs was to be sold for development, they decided to purchase it and put in a couple of fresh water prawn ponds. With the help of the Virginia Aquatic Network, Jeff and Jack designed two ponds each about an acre in size. Luckily in North Carolina our clay and sand soil make good ponds. Pumping water out of underground water reservoirs fills many other prawn ponds, but the Kirby's have been able to fill their ponds for the last two years from rainfall and runoff. Jeff has even created a dyke and ditch system to catch more runoff and shunt it to a reservoir area that he can pump out if he needs it.

The Kirby's stock is actual prawn stock from Malaysia that is bred here in the United States. Because they are freshwater, they require no antibiotics and no iodine. Because they are actually prawn and not shrimp, they have less fat, less cholesterol, more Omega 3s and more protein than shrimp, beef, pork, lamb or chicken. The ponds will be seeded with baby prawns in May and harvested on the first two Saturdays in October. You may purchase prawns right out of the water at the farm then, or look for them at Weaver Street Market and on the menu at Panzanella.

You can visit Stagg Creek Farm on the Piedmont Farm Tour this April 25 and 26.
Farm Tour buttons and maps will be available April 3.

Local Farms / Local Art: An Art Exhibit Celebrating the 14th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour

This spring, Panzanella and Weaver Street Market's Hillsborough store will host a juried exhibit to explore what North Carolina artists create when the inspiration is local farming. Farmers and their families, crops, animals, landscapes, farm buildings and equipment are all possible subjects. This is our second year presenting the Local Farms/Local Art Exhibit. It will be displayed in Panzanella and the Hillsborough Weaver Street Market from April 5 through June 8, 2009.
