| Creamy Hot Chocolate for Mom | |||
Want to make your mom a delicious, unique, and remarkably easy Mother's Day dessert? ~ by Emily buehler, Contributing Writer With the evenings still cool, you'll be able to sit out on the porch after dinner and enjoy the creamiest hot chocolate you've ever tasted—the secret is in the chocolate. The idea for this recipe came from a visit to the amazing French Broad Chocolate Lounge in Asheville. Visit the lounge's website here. I watched the hot chocolate version of a barista slowly mixing my drink on a stove and realized he was melting actual chocolate into it. After years of using powdered hot cocoa mix, the idea of using chocolate bars seemed revolutionary, especially when so many flavored chocolate bars are available. To make one small mug of hot chocolate, mix half a mug of coconut milk and half a mug of water in a small saucepan on medium to medium-high heat. (Remember to shake the coconut milk can or stir it before using.) Melt in about half of your favorite chocolate bar: I like Equal Exchange's 71% cacao Very Dark Chocolate and Green & Black's Fair Trade Maya Gold, which has an orange flavor. You might also try Green & Black's cherry or espresso, or Dagoba's lavender or mint chocolate bars. At first the mixture will seem grainy and grayish, but as the chocolate melts it will turn smooth and brown. Keep heating until it's a good temperature to drink. On sale this month: Native Forest organic coconut milk, 3 cans for $5. Equal Exchange chocolate bars, $2.79. Green and Black's chocolate bars, 2 for $5. Dagoba chocolate bars, $1.99 |

| Clean your room for Mom | |||
Seventh Generation and Natural Clean on Sale~ by Emily buehler, Contributing Writer When I was little, I'd ask my mom what she wanted for Mother's Day and she'd always reply with a variation on the same theme: "I want you to be good" or "I want you to help with chores" or "I want you to do the dishes for a week." I couldn't buy her off with chocolates or perfume; she didn't want flowers or jewelry. Any material gift would be meaningless after her reply. I never thought to stop asking. What does your Mom want this year? The May Co-op Advantage Flyer features might be able to help, with Seventh Generation cleaning products on sale. All purpose household cleaner, carpet cleaner, and glass cleaner are all reduced to $3.99 a bottle and available at all three stores. If your mom is a "Clean the bathroom" type, look for toilet bowl cleaner and tub/tile cleaner on sale at our Carrboro and Hillsborough stores, or Natural Clean's mildew spray cleaner for $4.49 at all three stores. But if Mom just wants you to be good, you're on your own. |

| Cinco de Mayo | |||
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Today!~ by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. (A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day, but that's actually September 16 and is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.) Cinco de Mayo is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, but is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Looking for ways to celebrate? Check out the May Co-op Advantage Flyer for a great Mexican 7-Layer Dip recipe. The flyer, which shows grocery items on sale throughout the month, is available near the newsletter stands at the entrances of all three Weaver Street Market stores. Features this month include Little Bear tortilla chips for $2.79, Little Bear refried beans for 3 cans for $5, and Green Mountain gringo salsa for $3.49. We also sell Weaver Street Market made salsas and guacamole in the Grab 'N Go case. Look for fresh tortillas in the dairy case. And wash it all down with a 6-pack of Corona for $8.99. Also look for Negro Modelo at our Hillsborough and Southern Village stores, and cans of Modelo Especial at our Carrboro store. |
