a Local Event
By Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer
Eating local food is becoming easier and easier, as our area's farmers diversify and offer more options, and as new trends like grass-fed meat take hold. This holiday weekend, why not incorporate our area's foods into your festivities, supporting our local economy and making your picnic basket burst with flavor? Start with hamburgers made of local, grass-fed beef! Last week, we highlighted some of the health benefits of grass-fed beef (read them here), which Weaver Street Market carries as part of our sustainable meat and seafood policy (read here). Pick up a pound of ground beef to make your cookout patties, remembering that you'll need to adjust cooking times to avoid drying out the leaner meat. (Read cooking tips for grass-fed beef here.) Local Memorial Day! continued

What's better on which to eat your burgers than locally made Weaver Street Market hamburger buns? Our bread bakers' newest creation is available in 4-packs in all three stores.

And topping your burgers has never been easier: Why not fry up some local bacon? Big, leafy heads of local lettuce have arrived, and our neighborhood cheese-makers have provided cheeses from crumbly to sliceable: Holly Grove Farms' Fresh Summertyme Blue would make a great blue cheese burger, while Ashe County's Caraway Cheddar or Pepperjack could be sliced and melted on top. Create a Tex-Mex burger with Weaver Street Market's salsa and guacamole as toppings, or use locally made Old Mule BBQ Sauce or Pluto's Jamaican Jerk Sauce for unique flavors. Look for locally grown hot-house tomatoes from Sunburst Farms and your burger could be totally local!

As a final touch, boil up some locally laid eggs and arrive with a plate of deviled eggs, or bring some snacking cheese along with vegetables or bread: the Weaver Street Market-made New England Blackout Cheese might be too firm for dipping, but a knife could spread it onto carrot sticks or crackers. The spread combines the sweetness of pineapple and apricots with the tang of cheddar. Or try one of our local goat cheeses on a fresh baguette: Hillsborough Cheese Company's Sun-dried Tomato Chevre, Black River's Herbes de Provence Chevre, Celebrity Dairy's Apricot Spread, or Elodie Farms' Cucumber & Dill, or Fig & Honey.

However you celebrate, keep it local with foods made right here in North Carolina!

Value Recipe
Grilled Sirloin Steak with Garlic Cream Sauce and Corn on the Cob

INGREDIENTS:
4 sirloin steaks (This week's WSM special: USDA Choice all natural boneless Sirloin steaks, sale: $8.99/lb, reg. $9.99/lb, save $1.00/lb!)
1 Tbsp. coarse black pepper
2 cups of heavy cream
2 Tbsp. chopped garlic
Dash salt & pepper
1 beef bouillon cube
small amount of butter and Olive Oil (WSM's special: Bella Famiglia Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 liter sale: $7.99, reg. price $17.99, save $10.00!)

DIRECTIONS:
1. Sprinkle steaks, both sides with coarse black pepper. Coat steaks with a small amount of vegetable oil, to keep them from sticking to the grill.
2. In a small saucepan, saute garlic in a small amount of butter until soft but not brown, about a minute.
3. Add the heavy cream, bring to a simmer.
4. Add the salt and pepper to taste, along with the beef bouillon. Let the sauce simmer and it will reduce and become thicker, about 10 minutes. Grill steaks to desired doneness, drape sauce over the steaks.

Corn on the Cob - (Seasonal pick: Florida White Corn, 5 ears/$2.99, product of Florida)

INGREDIENTS:
4 ears corn
4 tablespoons butter, softened
salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat and lightly oil grate.
2. Peel back corn husks and remove silk. Place 1 tablespoon butter, salt and pepper on each piece of corn. Close husks.
3. Wrap each ear of corn tightly in aluminum foil. Place on the prepared grill.
Cook approximately 30 minutes, turning occasionally, until corn is tender.

For dessert, don't forget to pick up the South Carolina's peaches, 1.99/lb., New crop!

Championing a better world
Staycation in Style:
Gold Park, Hillsborough
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

With the economy down, gas prices high, and environmental concerns ever-abounding, there's never been a better time for a Staycation! Instead of rising at dawn to pack a car and make the long trek down I-40 to crowded beaches, take it easy: sleep in, pack a picnic lunch, and head down a back road to one of our local parks. Help the planet, save money, support the local economy, and enjoy a relaxing day in the Triangle.

Newly opened Gold Park in Hillsborough is a great place to begin. The park, located off Dimmocks Mill Road by the train bridge underpass, is fully equipped with restrooms and three picnic shelters with wheelchair accessible picnic tables, although only the biggest shelter has a grill. The two jungle gyms look pretty good to me, with wavy green slides and a mini-climbing wall; and I listen to excited squeals from the kids as I walk around the park: "Look at this! Look at this! Mommy, we don't have this at our school!" The fenced field for dogs has a separate section for smaller and "less active" dogs.

There's plenty of open space for running around; soccer goals and a tall fence hint of the ball fields to come, but at this point the grass looks very new. To get out of the sun, follow one of the paths to the woodsy back of the park, where a section of the new Riverwalk meanders by alongside the Eno River. As an added bonus, you might catch Amtrak's Carolinian flying past (at approximately 10AM and 5:30PM), or the local Piedmont (7:15 PM), or one of the long, slow freight trains that trundles down the track with a mile of coal-filled hopper cars, multi-colored tank cars, and alluring boxcars rolling along behind.

The park is open from 8 AM until 30 minutes past sunset, and alcohol is not allowed. Don't have time to grill out or pack a picnic? Stop by Weaver Street Market in Hillsborough and grab a sandwich or wrap from our Grab 'N Go case, or pack a meal off our Hot Bar or Salad Bar. The park is so close that you could even buy ice cream and arrive before it melts!
