2009 Local Food Made Good

By Rob Nichols, WSM Bread Bakery Mgr.
Youshouldabeenthere. That is, if you like eating creative and fantastic food prepared by passionate local chefs with ingredients grown by equally passionate local farmers. And of course hanging out in the pasture across from the family farm with the opportunity to get a tour of the operations. The event, the second Farm to Fork Picnic was a chance for like-minded foodies and their families to get together and commune with the flesh and spirits that make up a local food system. Of course it was a picnic and it was pretty hot; and there were the grills loaded with pig, lamb, goat, pizza, shrimp, buffalo burgers and more. More

Farm to Fork Highlights continued

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS), the Orange County Cooperative Extension, and our local Slow Food Triangle group sponsored the picnic, which was held at the Breeze Farm, just a few miles north of Hillsborough. All proceeds from the event will be used to benefit the farmer apprentice programs sponsored by CEFS and the People Learning Agriculture Now for Tomorrow (PLANT) @ Breeze Farm program, a recently developed farm and farmer incubator in Orange County. (Future farmers - you can find an application and more information here.

Okay, so back to the picnic. There were really two parts. First, each local farmer (and there were about 30) was paired with a chef who transformed the fruits of their labors into something very special. You would wander around and sample the wares, chat with the farm folks and/or the chefs and move on. Then there was the 'Craft Food' tent which highlighted local food artisans, many not associated with a restaurant. Here you could walk through and sample from the local producers of cheeses, cured meats, breads, pickles, preserves, vinegar, honey, beer, and chocolate, again with a chance to linger and compare notes.

Weaver Street Market was well represented at the picnic by both Jim Nixon, our chef at Panzanella, who worked with the folks at Castlemaine Farm, to create a Vegetable Rollatini made with Red Chard, Radicchio, Dandelion, Fennel and goat cheese, and Rob Nichols, who brought Weaver Street's artisan breads to sample in the Craft Tent (you might note that I am also writing this article). Weaver Street Breads (made from locally milled organic flour) were also found surrounding the bison burgers served by Weathervane Restaurant using meat from Orange County's Sunset Ridge Buffalo Farm.

I could go on, talk about the Tuscan-style Porchetta, the Banh mi sandwich, the cabrito and country ham, the sweet carrot lassi, onion marmalade, strawberry and honey-marshmallow snoballs. But if you were there you'd have your own favorites, and if you weren't, well, you'll just have to sign up next year.

Sunshine Burgers
On Sale!

No one wants to give up their favorite veggie burger. "My partner likes Boca Burgers!" my officemate replied when I raved about Sunshine Burgers in the office.

With Sunshine Burgers on sale this month, I'd been eating them regularly. Unlike most burgers, they're made of sunflower seeds, one of the best whole food sources of Vitamin E, known to reduce the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. The burgers are full of protein, fiber, healthy unsaturated fats, minerals and phytonutrients. They are soy-, dairy-, wheat-, and gluten-free.

Then it dawned on me: I eat two veggie burgers per meal, so why not make a double-decker sandwich combining the tastes of Sunshine Burgers and Boca Burgers? It could be an all-natural, vegetarian sort of 'Big Mac,' reaping the benefits of the Sunshine Burger AND the soy-based Boca Burger at once! With locally baked Weaver Street Market hamburger buns and so many delicious toppings to choose from, one sandwich could be an entire meal.

Sunshine Burgers in original flavor, barbeque, southwestern, and garden vegetable are sold in the freezer case. Through June they are on sale for $2.99 ($2.79 for original flavor).

From Discounts to Dividends
Coming soon...Sunday, June 28
Weaver Street Market will change the way it rewards consumer owners starting at the end of June, replacing the owner and senior discounts at the register with a Patronage Dividend.

"Changing from discounts to dividends, along with other changes that our staff is making, will put us back in the black," said Board Chair Dave Rizzo. Like many businesses, Weaver Street Market is going through a difficult financial time. Sales are down 12% in Carrboro and Southern Village, and the co-op is losing $65,000 a month.

The change will save $60,000 per month. Patronage dividends are more sustainable than discounts because the co-op returns profits to owners at the end of the year after we have made them. "Weaver Street Market is fortunate to have such loyal co-op owners who support our mission," said Rizzo. "This change ensures that our co-op will continue to provide what we value: local food, vibrant community, and a strong local economy."

For information on this change please read the following:
Letter to owners from the Board.
Brochure about the change.
A note from the General Manger, Ruffin Slater.
Frequently asked questions.
You may also contact the Board by email or the General Manager, Ruffin Slater by email or by calling 919.241.1767

Local Farmers' Markets
Special Events:
Southern Village Market - Thursdays - 3:30-6:30 pm
Every week there will be a drawing for prizes from Market Street Merchants. While you shop look for the box to enter your name for the drawing. The box will be located at a different vendor's booth each week. You don't have to be present to win. This week's prizes are an O2 Fitness Membership ($80 Value) and a $20 Bloom Gift Certificate.

Shopping at the Farmers' Market is a great way to get to know the people who grow your food (they not only grow it but they are the ones selling it to you.) Feel free to ask them questions about how they raise their pigs or grow their tomatoes. Come join us every Thursday through August 27 on the Village Green. Rain or shine, we're there.

Carrboro Market - Market Moves to the Street on the 4th of July!
For the first time since 1997 the Carrboro Market will move from its Town Hall location and position itself in front of the Hall on West Main for a Street-Fair-Style 4th of July Farmers' Market. The Market hours will be shortened, running from 7:00 am - 10:00 am, to allow for the Town's 4th of July festivities to take place on the ball field, the Market's usual site. Shoppers can stop by the information booth during Market hours and register in a drawing to win Market t-shirts and bags. Kids can take a close up look at a fire truck parked near our temporary Market location too. Get your fresh local picnic supplies and kick off the 4th of July in Carrboro by starting your morning on the streets of Carrboro! More details and maps indicating parking options will be available on our website www.carrborofarmersmarket.com.

Hillsborough Farmers' Market - At the Hillsborough Farmers Market this week, Bountiful Backyards from Durham will demonstrate how to maintain a home-scale and homeopathic-worm composting system. Vermicompost contains 50% active organic matter, and is one of the best soil amendments people can create on site themselves to minimize outside inputs for your garden. This compost can be used 'as is' or brewed into compost tea to support a robust and living soil food web, support your plants through the dry summer, and fight pests in the garden! Join the Hillsborough Farmers Market on Saturday from 8-noon in the parking lot of The Home Depot, NC86 and I-85, exit 165.

Cooperative Community Fund
We've planted a seed and it's growing steadily! Now in it's fourth year, the Cooperative Community Fund is a sustainable fund for community donations and is part of a national campaign called, 'Give where you live.' Sponsored by the Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation, the fund serves as a means for co-op members and shoppers to make donations to an endowment that donates to local non-profit organizations.

Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation directly invests the money raised by individual co-ops across the country in socially responsible funds such as credit unions, locally owned community banks that support cooperatives, the Northcountry Cooperative Development Fund, and the National Cooperative Bank.

This year the fund generated $1500 in interest for Weaver Street Market to disperse to local groups while leaving the principle to grow next year's community seed!

Small Grant Opportunity for Local Non-Profits

Local groups working on issues relating to: 1) sustainable agriculture and organic food, 2) hunger and malnutrition, 3) environmental protection, or 4) cooperatives are eligible to apply for a grant from Weaver Street Market's Cooperative Community Fund. Eligible organizations must be certified non-profit and be working in Orange, Chatham, or Alamance Counties, NC. Recipients will be chosen by a volunteer committee of worker- and consumer-owners of Weaver Street Market, and will be featured in Weaver Street Market's Annual Report in early October.

Championing a Better World
Celebrate Pollinators
National Pollinator Week Celebration
Saturday, June 27, 2009
10:00 am-2:00 pm
Chatham Mills/Chatham Marketplace in Pittsboro, NC

If you like to eat, then you have cause for celebrating pollinators, as at least one-third of the food we eat relies on bees, flies, and other critters to set fruit and seed. Much of our wildlife also relies on pollinators to make the seeds and fruits that they eat.

The purpose of National Pollinator Week is to teach pollinator-friendly practices and raise public awareness of the importance of the bees, beetles, butterflies, moths, flies, birds, and bats that are needed to produce 80 percent of our flowering plants and one third of our human food crops.

This event is sponsored by Chatham Mills Development Corporation and hosted by Chatham Marketplace.

Chatham Marketplace is Pittsboro's locally owned grocery co-op - stop by this week and look for the little bee symbols that identify all the products in the store that depend on pollinators - everything from vegetables and fruits to juice to cooking oils to meat and dairy (forage crops) to coffee and tea and chocolate...when you see the bee symbol you can thank pollinators for making that food possible! Enjoy a pollinator-friendly local lunch at Chatham Marketplace during the program!
