| Cooperative Community Fund | |||
We've planted a seed and it's growing steadily! Now in it's fourth year, the Cooperative Community Fund is a sustainable fund for community donations and is part of a national campaign called, 'Give where you live.' Sponsored by the Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation, the fund serves as a means for co-op members and shoppers to make donations to an endowment that donates to local non-profit organizations. Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation directly invests the money raised by individual co-ops across the country in socially responsible funds such as credit unions, locally owned community banks that support cooperatives, the Northcountry Cooperative Development Fund, and the National Cooperative Bank. This year the fund generated $1500 in interest for Weaver Street Market to disperse to local groups while leaving the principle to grow next year's community seed! Small Grant Opportunity for Local Non-Profits Local groups working on issues relating to: 1) sustainable agriculture and organic food, 2) hunger and malnutrition, 3) environmental protection, or 4) cooperatives are eligible to apply for a grant from Weaver Street Market's Cooperative Community Fund. Eligible organizations must be certified non-profit and be working in Orange, Chatham, or Alamance Counties, NC. Recipients will be chosen by a volunteer committee of worker- and consumer-owners of Weaver Street Market, and will be featured in Weaver Street Market's Annual Report in early October. |

Al Ain is the birth city of the founder of UAE, Shaikh Zayed, and also the city of seven oases, including one of the largest in the Persian Gulf. UAE was established in 1971, based on a thousand years culture and needed only 20 years to arrive at a GDP comparable to the US. This paradox is still present in daily life in the UAE. Bernard would like to share this experience with you. He has some wonderful photos to show. |

| Adopt a Puffin! | |||
Want to help Weaver Street Market adopt a puffin? Barbara's Bakery, makers of Puffin's cereal, coordinates a puffin adoption program through the assistance of the Audubon Society, and Weaver Street Market is pooling our collective cereal-eating resources to adopt our own. Pick out your favorite Puffins cereal—Original, Cinnamon, Peanut Butter or Honey Rice—and start munching to help us contribute to the preservation of the puffins' habitat and help fund ongoing research. Look for the bins at the front of our stores later this week where you can deposit your box tops. Be sure to drop off the actual box top, not the UPC, as we only can get credit for one or the other. Once we've collected 250, we'll send them in and adopt our own! |

| Twist Sponges | |||
Clean Your House... And the EnvironmentThe makers of Twist cleaning products believe people don't like cleaning because they don't like the materials required to do it: the chemicals and the disposable tools. So they invented cleaning products they loved to use that were friendly to the environment. Twist's biodegradable "European sponge" works for everything from spills to regular kitchen cleanup, and can be refreshed in the dishwasher or in boiling water. The "naked sponge" lacks the chemicals, colors, and adulterated stuff you might find in traditional sponges. The "loofah sponge" is made of unbleached, un-dyed white cellulose and tan, scrubby loofah. And it's biodegradable, just like the food it cleans up after. And the "sponge cloth" is basically a reusable paper towel that's still biodegradable in the end. The only thing wrong with Twist products is the thin layer of plastic wrap, and Brian from Twist writes, "We are looking at getting into biodegradable clear plastic in the future." The sponges' packaging has a surprise inside: cut and fold lines printed in the package enable you to turn it into a bird feeder or bird mobile! (You can even upload your bird feeder photos to Twist's website here.) Twist sponges are featured in the co-op advantage program (CAP) flyer this month, on sale through July: a European cleaning sponge is $1.29, a 2-pack of naked sponges is $1.79, a loofah cleaning sponge is $3.29 for 2, and a European cleaning cloth is $2.59. Look for the naked sponges at all three Weaver Street Market locations, and the other products at our Carrboro and Hillsborough stores. |
