New! WSM Weekly Owner Specials see these great deals here. Summer Comfort Food July brings down-home favorites to your table. For some reason, a vision of a large summer pot-luck will not leave my head right now: it's about 95 degrees and 90% humidity. The table is dressed in a red-and-white-checkered cloth and is teeming from edge to edge with delicious dishes like fried chicken (and fried chicken tofu, of course), potato salad, baked beans, slaw, squash casserole, cucumber salad, green bean casserole, green rice (the kind with broccoli and something creamy, not the chili/cilantro type), and mountains of desserts like banana pudding, blueberry cobbler, peach pie, and finally, standing alone, chilled and unadorned: the watermelon. There are also probably a few flies around, but who cares? You're about to have the feast of your life! more |

| Summer Comfort Food continued | |||
The cool thing about my little food fantasy is that this month a lot of what is on the table can be done locally. And if you missed some of the items last month, don't say I didn't warn ya. You can still eat quite well now. Freestone peaches will finally be here, so bust out all your peach-centric favorites like cobbler and pie, homemade ice cream, and don't forget to eat them plain or with blueberries, which will also be around now. We had some tasty June berries from several local farms, and this month, we will have some from River's Finest in Reidsville, NC. Local tomatoes will be plentiful, as will cantaloupes and watermelons. We are also going to feature corn from Stagg Creek Farm in Mebane. Which brings me to my favorite part, the recipe.Something about summer veggies, ok, about cooking in general, makes me think of Ann Jackson, whose cookbook is hands-down the dirtiest and raggedy-est one in my kitchen, and I am on at least my third or fourth copy. What can I say? Heart of the Home is the best for local foods, 'cause a lot of its recipes come from grandma and her friends and family. These ladies really know how to showcase a vegetable and provide comfort food at the same time. And you know what? People need comfort food in the summer, too. So, get your apron out; this one is a little messy. But definitely worth it. Granny's Famous Creamed Corn |

| Granny's Famous Creamed Corn | |||
Ingredients:• 5-6 cups corn, scored (to score corn, run knife through kernels before cutting them off the cob) • 3 Tbs margarine or butter • 2 Tbs honey or sugar • 1/4 to 1/3 cup flour • 1/2 cup soy or dairy milk • 1/2 tsp salt • Black pepper Directions: 1. Cut the corn off the cob into a bowl (so you won't waste any of the juice!) 2. Melt the margarine or butter in a pan and stir in the flour, then the sweetener. 3. Let this cook a few minutes and then add the corn with its juice. 4. Give it a stir and then add the milk, salt and pepper. 5. Stir this occasionally. It shouldn't take long to thicken. 6. Put a few dots of butter on top and serve immediately. If you want to be smart like Ann's Granny, get lots of fresh corn in the summer, cut it off the cob and freeze it. Then you can even have this tasty treat during the winter. Thanks for reading, everyone. Enjoy! ~ wendy |

Southern Village Market - Thursdays - 3:30-6:30 pmEvery week there will be a drawing for prizes from Market Street Merchants. While you shop look for the box to enter your name for the drawing. The box will be located at a different vendor's booth each week. You don't have to be present to win. This week's prize is a Town Hall Grill $25 Gift Certificate. Shopping at the Farmers' Market is a great way to get to know the people who grow your food (they not only grow it but they are the ones selling it to you.) Feel free to ask them questions about how they raise their pigs or grow their tomatoes. Come join us every Thursday through August 27 on the Village Green. Rain or shine, we're there. South Estes Farmers' Market - Hours of operation are: Saturdays, 8 a.m. to noon year round, and Tuesdays, 4 - 7 p.m. May through September. The market is located at University Mall in Chapel Hill and is sponsored by A Southern Season. Now in its second year, SEFM has over 30 vendors, including seasonal produce, meats - beef, chicken, pork, goat, duck and lamb, the only local farmers' market seafood in the area, handmade gifts, worm compost, and baked goods. New vendor! Woodland Pond Farm, Gourmet Muscovy Ducks - At Woodland Pond we specialize in farm raised, free range Muscovy ducks. All our ducks rear their own young and forage throughout the day. Their diet is free from antibiotics, hormones, or other additives and we do not use herbicides or pesticides on the property. Muscovy ducks provide very lean, full-flavored and firm dark meat. Being allowed to forage for their food as well as develop their muscles through natural activities gives our ducks a savory taste and incredible texture. Our duck is perfect for everyone from the home gourmet to the health conscious consumer to those seeking humanely-raised meats from local farms. It has been served from The Dining Room at the Biltmore Estate to The Weathervane at Southern Season. We now have whole birds as well as duck breasts, legs, drumettes, carcasses for stock, and duck eggs available for retail sale at the South Estes Farmers Market. So be sure to stop by to purchase our products or view our webpage, for more information. Carrboro Farmers' Market - As farmers markets around the country get ready for the summer months, Care2.com is proud to announce a new online contest called "Love Your Farmers Market". Care2.com is partnering with LocalHarvest.org to raise awareness of local foods, family farms, and community farmers markets and to reward America's favorite farmers market through this fun, summer-long contest. Care2 will award $5,000 to the farmers market that receives the most votes. Currently, the Durham Farmers' Market is in first place, and our very own Carrboro Farmers' Market is second! If the Carrboro Farmers' Market can win the $5000 prize, one of the things it would like to do is buy an EBT machine so that people on food stamps would be able to purchase food at the Farmers' Market. Follow the link below to vote for your favorite farmers' market. Together we can make a difference. |

| Adopt a Puffin! | |||
Want to help Weaver Street Market adopt a puffin? Barbara's Bakery, makers of Puffin's cereal, coordinates a puffin adoption program through the assistance of the Audubon Society, and Weaver Street Market is pooling our collective cereal-eating resources to adopt our own. Pick out your favorite Puffins cereal—Original, Cinnamon, Peanut Butter or Honey Rice—and start munching to help us contribute to the preservation of the puffins' habitat and help fund ongoing research. Look for the bins at the front of our stores later this week where you can deposit your box tops. Be sure to drop off the actual box top, not the UPC, as we only can get credit for one or the other. Once we've collected 250, we'll send them in and adopt our own! |
