Grass-fed beef is good for cattle: • Grass is the natural diet of ruminants. • Pasture grazing provides a better quality of life than conventional feedlots. • Lack of crowding reduces stress. • Better living conditions make for healthier cows. | 100% Grass-Fed Beef continued | |||
Grass-fed beef is good for the environment:• Grazing eliminates the need for grain grown using pesticides and chemical fertilizers. And, because grass does not need to be harvested and transported like grain, farmers use less fuel and energy. • Grazing preserves topsoil, while conventional grain farming contributes to erosion. • Naturally fertilized pasture turns the problem of manure into an opportunity. • Pasture helps reduce greenhouse gases by binding carbon in deep root masses. • Pasture removes more carbon dioxide from the air than any other land use, including forestland. Our grass-fed beef comes from local farms. We are committed to offering meat from small-scale local producers and processors. We build partnerships with family farms and processors in North Carolina who share our commitment to quality products and sustainable farming practices. We supplement our local grass-fed beef with non-local grass-fed beef to balance supply and demand as our local meat program continues to grow. |

Decadent Newman-O's BarsIf your summer picnics are tired of chocolate chip cookies and box-mix brownies, then this recipe is for you. It's simple to assemble and so good you'll wow the crowds. 24 Newman-O's 1/4 butter or margarine 2 cups (12 oz) chocolate chips 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup chopped nuts (I use walnuts.) Start with a bag of Newman-O's, which are on sale in August. (You need 24 cookies, which is less than one bag.) Crush the cookies in a food processor if you have one; if not, you can put the cookies in a Ziplock bag and smash them with a hammer. (They're supposed to be 'finely ground' but I never achieve this and the recipe still works. Just try to eliminate any large chunks.) Now is a good time to start the butter/margarine melting, chop the nuts, grease the 9x13 pan, and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. (Don't use wax paper in place of grease—it sticks.) Combine the crushed cookies with melted butter/margarine. Spread the mix in the bottom of a greased 9x13 pan and press with the back of a spoon or fork. In the former butter-melting saucepan, over medium heat, melt 1 cup of chips with the sweetened condensed milk and vanilla. When the mixture is uniform, pour it evenly over the cookie crust. Top with the nuts and then the remaining chips. Bake for 20 minutes. When the bars are done, let them cool completely; the gooey ingredients have to solidify to hold the bars together. Then cut them—I cut them smaller than usual for brownies, since they are very rich. Newman-O's organic cookies are on sale through August for $1.99 a bag. They contain no partially hydrogenated oils or trans-fatty acids, and instead use palm fruit oil from a part of Columbia where its production helps protect the area. Newman-O's organic chocolate is produced in Central and South America, with measures taken to certify that it is produced without the use of forced labor. Read more about Newman-O's, including the Ode to Newman-O's, here. |

Owner Loans are an opportunity to invest in your local food co-op!Weaver Street Market offers co-op owners an opportunity to invest their money locally through our Owner Loan Program. By loaning money to Weaver Street Market, your investment stays with a business you know and trust, and enhances the economic sustainability in our region, supports local farmers, and builds our local community. What is the owner loan program? The owner loan program is an opportunity for Weaver Street Market owners to further support the co-op by loaning money. Food cooperatives routinely use owner loans to provide additional owner capital to open a new store or strengthen the co-op's operations. What are the goals of Weaver Street Market's Owner Loan Program? We have set an owner loan goal of $500,000 for 2009-2010. The funds raised will be used to retire existing loans and other debt. To reach this goal, we are seeking 50 owners who can make loans of $10,000 or more. What are the terms of the Loan Program? 1. The Owner Loan Program is open to all Weaver Street Market owners who are North Carolina residents. 2. The interest rate is 6%. Interest is paid annually on the anniversary of the loan. 3. The minimum loan amount is $10,000. 4. The term is five years. Are there risks associated with this program? Owner lenders face the risk inherent in lending funds to any business endeavor. Owner loans are unsecured and are subordinated to our bank loans. Potential lenders should carefully read the Offering Memorandum. Contributing to our future Owner lenders play a vital role in the security and growth of our co-op. Owner loans enabled Weaver Street Market to open 21 year ago, and have supported our growth ever since. Your loan will strengthen the co-op's capacity to support our local growers, food producers, and the local economy while providing secure jobs in a thriving local business. What is the next step? Please contact General Manager Ruffin Slater by email for more information and to receive the complete loan packet. |

| Cooperative Community Fund |
We've planted a seed and it's growing steadily! Now in it's fourth year, the Cooperative Community Fund is a sustainable fund for community donations and is part of a national campaign called, 'Give where you live.' Sponsored by the Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation, the fund serves as a means for co-op members and shoppers to make donations to an endowment that donates to local non-profit organizations. Twin Pines Cooperative Foundation directly invests the money raised by individual co-ops across the country in socially responsible funds such as credit unions, locally owned community banks that support cooperatives, the Northcountry Cooperative Development Fund, and the National Cooperative Bank. This year the fund generated $1500 in interest for Weaver Street Market to disperse to local groups while leaving the principle to grow next year's community seed! Small Grant Opportunity for Local Non-Profits Local groups working on issues relating to: 1) sustainable agriculture and organic food, 2) hunger and malnutrition, 3) environmental protection, or 4) cooperatives are eligible to apply for a grant from Weaver Street Market's Cooperative Community Fund. Eligible organizations must be certified non-profit and be working in Orange, Chatham, or Alamance Counties, NC. Recipients will be chosen by a volunteer committee of worker- and consumer-owners of Weaver Street Market, and will be featured in Weaver Street Market's Annual Report in early October. The deadline for applications is August 26, 2008 at 9:00 pm. Download an application here. |

Citra Solv for Cleaning and ArtThere's nothing worse than spending a summer day down under your toilet or peering under the burners of your oven. But while cleaning may not be your favorite weekend activity, there is one way to make it better: by using all-natural cleaners. Twenty years ago, Citra Solv came out with a unique all-natural cleaner that worked: it's made from D'Limonene (the clear liquid from the peel of the orange), essential oil blend, and biodegradable cleaning agents derived from coconut. Read more about Citra Solv products here. What's more, when you're done cleaning you can spend the rest of the day making Citra Solv artwork! The cleaner can be used to transfer the ink from a magazine page onto art paper (like watercolor paper), where you can then incorporate it into a work of art. It's also been used as a creative quilting technique to transfer images onto fabric. Read more about Citra Solv artwork here. Citra Solv Natural Cleaner and Degreaser is on sale in August for $4.99! (The bottle looks small because it is the concentrated, dilute-able formula.) |
