Organic Harvest Month

By Cat Moleski, Contributing Writer
September is organic month and WSM will be highlighting the organic products found on our shelves. By buying organic products you give yourself and your environment the chance to breathe easier a little longer. Organic farming replenishes the soil and preserves healthy farmland for the future. Organic produce is more nutritious and better for children according to a study conducted by the American Dietetic Association. For all of us who want to eat better, and help preserve our environment, choosing organic products is a great way to put our shopping dollars to work with our values. More

Back-to-School Desserts!
Make Back-to-School Better with Dessert
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

I didn't have a grade-school bully stealing the cookies from my lunchbox. I had Danny O., the popular, charming blonde kid who got straight A's. He didn't exactly steal my desserts; he asked politely, knowing I was too shy to say no. I fantasized about doing the 'pepper trick' that my Mom had used when she was a kid, but I didn't want Danny to hate me when he bit into my Mom's famous blonde brownie and got a mouthful of black pepper. Eventually, Mom caught on and started packing two desserts, one for me and one for Danny.

Why did Danny target me? Because he knew I was a pushover? Or because I had the best desserts?

You might not have time to bake blonde brownies, but some good alternatives are on sale at the co-op! This week only, owners save $1.30 on a 4 pack of Weaver Street Market-made cupcakes. Pack one in your child's lunchbox and she'll be swarmed with Danny O's. Also on sale, for the month of September, are Newman's Own Organic peanut butter cups—the yummy-ness of peanut butter and chocolate in an all natural form!

If your kids love candy, look for gummy bears and jellybeans on sale. And if you're looking for something a little healthier, Fig Newman's, Fruit Leather, and Smooshed Fruit are also on sale, as well as Annie's bunny-shaped fruit snacks for the little ones.

If you have time for some baking, go easy on yourself and use Immaculate Baking's ready-to-bake cookie dough, in flavors like Chocolate Chunk and Vanilla Sugar, available in the refrigerator case and on sale for $2.99 through September.

The 2009 Carrboro Music Festival will present a myriad of musical styles (at 24 venues) with over 160 different musical aggregations—ranging in size from solo artists to a seventeen piece jazz orchestra. The day-long, free festival features music at various indoor and outdoor venues. The outdoor sites present music until dark, while some of the indoor venues go well into the evening.

Free Transportation
A free bio-diesel shuttle bus will be running back and forth between the Carrboro Plaza Park & Ride Lot and downtown from noon until 8:00 PM. Volunteer on Festival Day!
Want to be a part of this incredible community event? You can do that while making new friends or hanging out with old friends. There are numerous types of jobs to be done. Help backstage, assist in traffic direction and parking or work at an information table. Those are but a few of the ways that you can help while still hearing an awful lot of music. Students can receive Service Learning hours while all volunteers will get a free festival T-shirt, a free raffle ticket and two free passes to any regular scheduled program at The DSI Comedy Theater. Check out the volunteer page at our Volunteer Description web page.

Posters and T-shirts
The Carrboro Music Festival founding member and musician Janet Place created a special design for the 12th annual Carrboro Music Festival. Application Deadline
Monday, September 7, 9:00 pm

October is National Co-op Month, making it the perfect time to hold the election for the Weaver Street Market's Board of Directors. One of the benefits of being an WSM owner is participating in governing the store, by voicing your views on ownership issues and electing members to the Board of Directors. You also may serve on the Board yourself.

Any owner in good standing for one year is eligible to be a Board member, and is encouraged to consider nominating him/herself or another owner.

Candidate application packets may be picked up at all WSM store locations. These packets include background information, details of the election process, and how to learn more about the Board and its processes. Candidates for elected positions on the Board will acquaint themselves with board governance policies and procedures prior to application. Opportunities for doing this include: reviewing the current Board policy notebook, discussing his/her candidacy with a Board member, and attending a board meeting. Such preparation prior to applying will help a prospective candidate to decide whether serving on the Board is a commitment he/she wishes to make. Candidates are expected to present applications in the established form by the published date; no write-in candidates are allowed.

You are encouraged to participate! Contact the board for more information.

Consider nominating yourself, or simply vote for a candidate in October. Exercising your rights as an owner is critical to WSM remaining a successful and vital part of the community.

Phonebooks Piling Up?
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

It's that time of year: new phonebooks will begin appearing on your porch and in your driveway. Sadly, there have been no advances in the quest to allow households to opt-out of automatically receiving phone books from every company that prints them. But at least we can recycle! There are no special phone book bins; phonebooks can be recycled year round at the curb and at apartment complexes in the recycling bin labeled "ALL PAPER". At recycling drop off sites, Orange County asks residents to recycle their old phonebooks with newspapers.

Chapel Hill Creamery Farm Dinner

Chapel Hill Creamery Farm Dinner
Monday, September 28, 5:30-9:00 pm at Panzanella

The Chapel Hill Creamery started with a desire to make cheese about seventeen years ago. Portia McKnight and Flo Hawley visited the Ashe County Cheese Plant pushing them closer to taking the leap to make their own cheese. While investigating local sources of milk, they decided that to get the freshest, highest quality milk, they would need to produce it themselves.

With that in mind, they developed their underlying philosophy of raising "cows that are healthy and happy and improving the quality of the land". Chapel Hill Creamery is located off Dairyland Road in Hillsborough and consists of 18 acres with a mixture of rye, clover and Red River crab grass. The cows move to fresh pasture twice a day allowing the cows to eat the very best part of the grass and allowing the grass to grow back before the pasture is used again. The herd is composed of Jersey cows because they produce creamy, rich, delicious milk, they are more tolerant of the heat and they are better suited to the intensive grazing system that Flo and Portia use. Portia and Flo maintain the purity of their product by keeping their herd healthy and by monitoring the quality of the milk as it goes through production.

The Chapel Hill Creamery makes around 6-7 kinds of cheese, including Carolina Moon and New Moon (Camembert-like), fresh Mozzarella, Farmer's cheese (also a fresh cheese), feta and one raw-milk, aged cheese made in the monastery style. Monastery cheeses were traditionally named after the monastery where they were made, and in keeping with that, they named their monastery cheese Hickory Grove after the Baptist Church at the end of their road.
