Their children help feed and water the animals and with harvesting crops. The children love to raise their own pigs, cows and chickens for 4-H and just for fun.

Their Farmer's Hybrid hogs are raised on open pasture along with a few cows, with small grains for cover crops and corn for feed. They rotate their pigs periodically to graze on forages of fescue, barley, millet, clover and other mixed grasses. Along with pasture to graze, the pigs are fed a corn feed mix.

They adhere to the Animal Welfare Institute standards, practice humane husbandry skills and do not use antibiotics or growth hormones in their animals' feed.

Leaf Bins Make Yard Cleanup Fun
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer
We've enjoyed their shade all summer, and now we have to pay the price: it's time to start raking leaves! This year I won't postpone until mid-winter, when I'd rake with fingers frozen to the handle. I'm eager to rake this year because I have a leaf bin.

Last year, I dumped the leaves in the wasteland of bushes at the back of my yard, knowing I'll encounter them again when I clear that area someday. Over the summer, though, I got some chicken wire and four posts and built a simple leaf bin like the one in the picture. (I used metal fence posts that could easily be pounded into the ground, and have tabs that are crimped down onto the chicken wire to hold it in place.) Suddenly, stray piles of leaves and plant trimmings left rotting around my yard had a purpose, a destiny. Eagerly, I gathered them to dump into the new bin. Then I emptied in several plant pots that had been sitting around the deck, withered plant carcasses and pot-shaped root balls eager to decompose in style.

Leaves make great mulch and (given time) compost. Treated lazily (like my leaves), whole leaves will decompose into healthy organic matter in about two years. Speed this up by shredding the leaves; if you don't have access to a shredder, use your lawn mower. Leaves also make a great addition to a traditional compost pile, but generally a yard full of leaves is too much! That's why a leaf bin is handy. Read more about composting leaves, how leaf mulch affects soil nutrients, and the joys of leaf mold, here.

If you need to get rid of leaves, bring them to four of the Orange County Solid Waste Convenience Centers' yard waste has been banned from the landfill. (Click here for more info.) In addition, town residents are served by the ever-exciting LEAF VACUUM TRUCKS, which make the rounds beginning in October or November. For more information about this service, click here for Carrboro, here for Chapel Hill, and here for Hillsborough. Durham residents have limited yard waste pickup; read about it here.
Shred-a-thon
Recycle Paper and Protect Your Identity!
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer
Wednesday, October 7
10 AM to 2 PM

The Chapel Hill Police Department and Orange County Solid Waste Department with sponsorship from the Chapel Hill YMCA will conduct a free shred-a-thon at University Mall, Wednesday October 7 from 10 AM to 2 PM. A second shred-a-thon will held Saturday November 14 from 10 AM to 2 PM at the recycling site behind Home Depot in Hillsborough.

Any Orange County resident, or those residents that reside in the Town of Chapel Hill found in Durham County, may bring confidential papers that are free of plastic, computer disks and other non-paper items for shredding by a local firm, A-Shred-Ahead. Those bringing paper in boxes can then recycle their empty cardboard boxes at the nearby recycling site.
