Michael Shuman speaks at WSM Annual Meeting! WSM Owners will have the opportunity to hear author Michael Shuman speak on "Building a Local Food System" at WSM's Annual Meeting, Sunday, October 25 at the Carrboro Century Center, 7-9 pm. Michael Shuman's book, The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses Are Beating the Global Competition, proposes that local communities can organize around local economies and be competitive with larger corporate businesses. Shuman highlights eight trends that are making the old "bigger is better" economies of scale argument obsolete, and he describes a variety of innovative strategies these businesses are using to successfully compete with their over-sized competitors. He also shows how consumers can support these businesses by "going local" in their spending. More |

| Imagine Bistro Organic Moroccan Chickpea Bisque | |||
The Best Soup I Ever Hadby Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer This isn't some wistful tale of spooning soup at my Grandmother's kitchen table. Nor is it a saga of a romance at the fanciest restaurant in town, where the shallow bowl of $8 soup was worth every penny. The soup came in a box, and we nuked it in the microwave. At the first mouthful, both of us were exclaiming, "This soup is so good!" And a minute later, "I think it's the best soup I've ever had!" Weaver Street Market didn't yet carry the soup, Imagine Bistro Organic Moroccan Chickpea Bisque; when the sample box came in, they said it was too expensive. A look at the ingredients might explain why: the mile long list includes everything from cumin and cilantro to chipotle peppers and yeast. This would explain the complexity of the taste—slightly spicy but hearty at the same time. To top it off, the soup is vegan, and each serving has 5 grams of protein and 8% of the daily recommended intake of iron—good news for vegetarians. I begged our merchandiser to order the Chickpea Bisque, and it's now in stock for $4.99 a box. Heat it with broccoli or sliced okra to make a meal, or serve it in shallow bowls and pretend you're at El Mamounia de Paris. It'll be worth every penny. |

| Community in Schools | |||
Communities in Schools (CIS) is an outreach program that identifies students at risk for academic failure throughout the Orange County Public School System from kindergarten to 12th grade. Through its after school programs, mentoring, and tutoring they help students stay in school and graduate. Of the 17,000 students in Orange County, CIS serves approximately 2,000 each year through their programs. The Day School program serves approximately 70 students with tutoring and by pairing the child's needs with agencies that can offer assistance. The After School program serves 300 students with tutorial support, and recreational and enrichment activities from 3-6 pm.Community in Schools currently needs to raise $15,000 to continue to offer their programs to at-risk students. They are looking for individuals to serve on a fundraising committee to help them reach this goal. If you would like to help out please contact Sheila D. Keep Those Egg Cartons Coming!by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer Egg cartons are hard to get rid of—something about those curved little cups pleads for re use. Thankfully, North Carolina has a progressive, environmentally friendly 'Egg Law.' Egg farmers can re-use cartons it they are "clean, unbroken and free of foreign odor" and if incorrect information is marked through—some farmers use stickers to cover the name of the carton's original user. (Helpful, easy-to understand information about the Egg Law is available from the Chatham County Agricultural Extension Agency here. There's also a link to the not-so-easy-to-understand North Carolina 'Egg Law.') This means you can take your egg cartons back to your favorite egg farmer at the Farmers' Market. Most of them probably don't mind if the carton came from another farm. (Mike Perry of Perry-Winkle Farm at the Carrboro Farmers' Market particularly likes getting egg cartons back, regardless of their origin.) The customer service desk at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro also accepts egg cartons, which are picked up by farmers delivering eggs to the store. Alternatively, prepare for a winter full of fireside evenings by making 'fire-starters': fill an egg carton halfway with wood shavings (the kind you buy for gerbil cages). Melt candle stubs and other scrap wax in a double boiler; fill each carton cup halfway with shavings. Carefully ladle the wax over the shavings and let it cool. Rip apart the carton and voilà! Each cup is a fire-starter—just light the edge and place it under the logs in the fireplace. My mom saved energy by making fire-starters with leftover grill heat. Time for one last cookout, anyone? |
