no Tricks, all Treats!

By Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer
For most kids, Halloween is synonymous with candy. Such was not the case for me. Sure, my sister and I dressed up to trick-or-treat in our neighborhood, shadowed by a man in a wool cap who looked about the same height as my Dad. But once we got home, we emptied our plastic pumpkins onto the kitchen table for what my mom called 'The Trading Game.' "What'll you give me for this coloring book?" Mom would ask, her excitement permeating our reluctance to part with our candy. "I'll trade you for two packs of gum and one Milk Duds!" Soon my loot would be reduced to the Milky Way bar from old Mrs. Nelson across the street. This Mom allowed me to eat—one slice a night for a week. More

Fair Trade Chocolate: no Tricks, all Treats! continued
I must admit, I enjoyed the Trading Game, in spite of the doorbell interrupting our bartering, calling Mom to pass out forbidden candy to all the other kids in the neighborhood. I ended up with a pile of durable goods—crayons, buttons, Halloween-themed pencils—a better deal, I knew, than ephemeral candy. And Mom melted down the chocolate items into pudding, so technically we did get to eat them.

Now that I'm free to eat as much 'junk food' as I want, ironically I don't want any—after a brief affair with Lucky Charms in college, I regressed to my sugar-free childhood diet. But chocolate is another matter entirely.

I excuse my chocolate consumption with the argument, Chocolate is not junk food. It's full of iron (up to 38% per serving in the high cacao content bars), as well as flavonoids, a kind of anti-oxidant. Evidence shows that chocolate (especially dark chocolate) helps keep blood flowing and blood pressure down.

Fair Trade certification ensures fair prices for cocoa farmers and protects against forced or abusive child labor. At first, trying to buy Fair Trade chocolate meant I could buy plain chocolate bars, but over the past few years, Weaver Street Market's stock of Fair Trade chocolate has increased to include flavored bars in a variety of darknesses, baking chips, cocoa powder, and hot cocoa mix.

Co-ops and Fair Trade go hand-in-hand as concepts, as they connect producers with consumers, support sustainable lives for growers and for the earth, and promote conditions in the world that we can all be proud of. Look for the Fair Trade logo throughout Weaver Street Market, on everything from chocolate and coffee to tea, sugar, and even wine! And through the month of October, Equal Exchange's Fair Trade chocolate bars, cocoa powder, hot cocoa mix, and teas are all on sale.

Of course, there's still the Halloween dilemma—what to do now that I'm the grownup? Will I play the Trading Game with my kids? Or maybe I'll coerce them into 'reverse trick-or-treating': send away for a kit of Fair Trade chocolate with cards attached that explain the need for Fair Trade. Then turn Halloween into a meaningful event by taking the kids door-to-door, passing out the candy. The kits are sold out for this year, but you can read more about the program here and make a plan for next year.

Chili Cook-Off
The Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce Presents
The SECOND Annual Chili and Salsa Cookoff

For several years, the people of Hillsborough have been clamoring for a Chili cookoff. In 2008, the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce heard your cries, answered them and found it good. So, the Chamber will present, on Saturday, October 31, Hillsborough's Second Annual Chili and Salsa Cookoff.

It's simple: fill out the entry form and return it to the Chamber along with your entry fee. Then take your best chili recipe - with or without beans, with or without meat, hot or mild - and make at least 6 quarts (1.5 gallons, about the contents of a large crock pot) for sampling by the judges and the public.
•Same goes for salsa, except we only need a gallon. Bring it to the 3rd Level of the Eno River Parking Deck no later than 11:30 am, Saturday, October 31.
•More than one entry per cook IS allowed. You must provide your own crock-pot or propane burner to keep the chili or salsa warm.
•Tables and tableclothes will NOT be provided; Each entrant should DECORATE their space, as presentation will be part of the judgement criteria.
All the rules are attached to the entry form. For more information, call the Chamber at 919-732-8156.

Bi-O-Kleen Produce Wash
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

'Tis the season of local apples—crispy and sweet. If you're hesitant to bite into a non-organic local apple, though, you might want to try Bi-O-Kleen's Produce Wash. Made with Grapefruit Seed and Lime Peel Extracts, it's "a safe, natural, effective cleaner that helps remove soil, waxes, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other unhealthy pollutants from your fruits, vegetables, and poultry." Bi-O-Kleen's Produce Wash also keeps your cutting boards and counters more sanitary by removing and rinsing away contaminants. It's concentrated so that a few drops go a long way and leave no residue or aftertaste.

Bi-O-Kleen founder Jim Rimer started the company in 1989 after a career as a sales rep of commercial and industrial cleaning products. Witnessing the negative health effects of traditional cleaners motivated him to develop his own products, following guidelines of effectiveness, high concentration, non-toxicity, and environmental safety. Read more about Bi-O-Kleen here.

Produce Wash is on sale for $3.79 (16 oz) through October, and is available at our Carrboro and Hillsborough locations.

"A puddle of shadow, a blanket of light"
Oil paintings by Matthew Scott Meyers
Now through December 7

Matthew Scott Meyers (Scott) was born and raised in eastern North Carolina and now lives in Carrboro. A self taught artist working in oils, Scott has been painting professionally for six years and has shown his work all over the south. His paintings present a saturated and inspired view of the trees, rocks and creeks of North Carolina. Always looking for light, color and pattern to present itself as he explores the deep woods, Meyers allows his eyes and heart to be filled with the interplay of those elements in the landscape. Back in the studio, using reference photos, he paints while the scene and sensation are still fresh, to capture the place and its impact on him.
