| Rhubarb Recipe | |||
I've hated rhubarb for decades. My mom's rhubarb plant grew out in the back garden, menacing me throughout the summer with its red celery stalks. Then one day, when questioned, "What's for dessert?" Mom replied with a nonchalant "cake." That night, after I'd eaten all my peas without complaint and drunk a whole glassful of skim milk, she produced a lumpy brown concoction with walnuts and banana-like lumps poking out.
"What is it?" I asked, my heart sinking. I feared bananas or worse, pineapple. The truth was far more horrendous.
"It's Chocolate Rhubarb Cake," she said brightly, as if her voice could win me over. I refused to eat the Chocolate Rhubarb Cake on principle, even though she continued to make it (and still does).
But now all that has changed. After a stewed rhubarb incident at a Midwestern diner, I opened up to the possibilities. When I noticed that Stahlbush Island Farms produces frozen rhubarb, I bought a bag and looked up a recipe for Stewed Rhubarb. It's simple, and delicious.• 2 cups sliced rhubarb (this is one bag of Stahlbush Island Farms) • ¼ to ½ tsp lemon juice • pinch of salt • ½ cup sugar Defrost the rhubarb in the fridge if possible. Put it in a pot with the lemon juice and salt. Add water to cover the bottom of the pot. Bring to a boil; then reduce heat and simmer. My rhubarb "dissolved" in about 15 minutes, leaving a pink shag-carpet-like puddle. It might take longer if your rhubarb is frozen or fresh. Watch the water level; if it boils off, add more. If the rhubarb breaks up and the mixture is still very watery, remove the cover to allow water to boil off. When the consistency is to your liking, add the sugar and stir until it is dissolved. Some people like stewed rhubarb as a side dish; I think it's more appropriate as a dessert. I tried it straight and couldn't stop eating it. Its soupy quality makes it a great ice cream, yogurt, or pancake topping. I'm still not convinced it belongs in chocolate cake, though. Last chance! Stahlbush Island Farms frozen fruits, including rhubarb, are on sale through the end of October for $2.79 a bag! |

The Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce PresentsThe SECOND Annual Chili and Salsa Cookoff For several years, the people of Hillsborough have been clamoring for a Chili cookoff. In 2008, the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce heard your cries, answered them and found it good. So, the Chamber will present, on Saturday, October 31, Hillsborough's Second Annual Chili and Salsa Cookoff. It's simple: fill out the entry form and return it to the Chamber along with your entry fee. Then take your best chili recipe - with or without beans, with or without meat, hot or mild - and make at least 6 quarts (1.5 gallons, about the contents of a large crock pot) for sampling by the judges and the public. • Same goes for salsa, except we only need a gallon. Bring it to the 3rd Level of the Eno River Parking Deck no later than 11:30 am, Saturday, October 31. • More than one entry per cook IS allowed. You must provide your own crock-pot or propane burner to keep the chili or salsa warm. • Tables and tableclothes will NOT be provided; Each entrant should DECORATE their space, as presentation will be part of the judgement criteria. All the rules are attached to the entry form. For more information, call the Chamber at 919-732-8156. |

RSVVP Day
Tuesday, November 10Triangle Restaurants will donate 10% of their proceeds that day to help fight hunger in our community. Weaver Street Market has been a participant in RSVVP since its inception twenty one years ago when restaurants, newspapers, TV, and radio came together to help the emergency food providers of North Carolina. RSVVP is a play on the acronym RSVP, where the VV stands for 10 (V is 5 in the Roman numeral system). Restaurants donate 10% of their gross proceeds and the media donate advertising time to get the word out. As Weaver Street Market has expanded over the years, so has our commitment to RSVVP. Weaver Street Market in Southern Village, in Hillsborough and Panzanella are also contributors to RSVVP. Our contribution goes directly to the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service. The Inter-Faith Council for Social Service is an amazing organization that started way back in the sixties before there were many government organizations helping people who needed food, shelter, and social services. Their list of services includes the Community Kitchen that serves around 80,000 meals a year, the Community House and HomeStart that provide beds and social service counseling for the homeless, Health Clinics, Hispanic Outreach, and more. Please join Weaver Street Market and Panzanella in supporting such a great local organization by eating out on Tuesday, November 10! |

| Envirobits - Reusable, Drug-free Neti Pots | |
Using a neti pot doesn't seem like an obvious way to help the environment. But consider the benefits: nasal cleansing uses only salt and water. If it works to relieve your sinus pressure or allergies, it eliminates your need to use pharmaceutical drugs, which require more manufacturing, packaging, and shipping than the occasional carton of salt. And the neti pot itself is completely reusable, unlike those little brown jars that pills come in.
If you've never used a neti pot, check out some online instructional videos like this one. The key to using a neti pot is accurate measuring. Fresh water or too-salty water will cause a burning sensation in your nose. If you measure fairly well, though, you won't feel a thing. Also, be sure to use non-iodized salt! The recipe is 8 oz warm water, ¼ tsp salt. (A shot glass is 2 oz; I stir with my finger to dissolve the salt and test the water temperature.) If success with a neti pot leaves you with unwanted pharmaceuticals, remember not to flush them! They're better in the landfill than the water supply. But better still would be bringing them to the Chapel Hill Police Department's collection event on November 11 at University Mall from 10 AM to 2 PM. They are also accepted at the Hazardous Household Waste Collection Center (Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM, Saturday from 7:30 AM to noon). Last chance! Ancient Secrets Nasal Cleansing Pots are on sale for $11.99 through the end of October! Click here to see how to use Neti Pot. |
