White Wheat Flour
White Wheat Flour: Have Your Cake and Eat Nutrients, Too!
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

What's the deal with "white whole wheat flour"? Is it white flour, or is it whole wheat?

The answer is surprisingly delicious: it's the best of both! According to the King Arthur Flour website, "Milled from white whole wheat, rather than red, unbleached King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour has all the fiber and nutrition of traditional whole wheat, with milder flavor and lighter color. Thus, white whole wheat is a great way to add whole grains to your family's diet. Start by replacing 1/3 of the all-purpose flour in your favorite recipe with white whole wheat flour; gradually increase the percentage of whole wheat until your baked good's flavor and texture are just the way you like them. We find that in cookies, muffins, pancakes and quick breads, using white whole wheat flour in place of the entire amount of all-purpose flour yields a baked treat that's just as tasty as the original, with the benefit of increased fiber, vitamins and minerals."

This month's CAP specials include five-pound bags of King Arthur's White Whole Wheat Flour for $5.99, as well as bags of traditional whole-wheat flour. (King Arthur Flour is America's oldest flour company, founded in 1790, and is employee-owned!) Try some of this up-and-coming flour in your holiday cooking, and give the whole family a gift of hidden nutrients.

RSVVP Day Today!
RSVVP Day is today, November 10
Triangle Restaurants will donate 10% of their proceeds that day to help fight hunger in our community.
Weaver Street Market has been a participant in RSVVP since its inception twenty two years ago when restaurants, newspapers, TV, and radio came together to help the emergency food providers of North Carolina. RSVVP is a play on the acronym RSVP, where the VV stands for 10 (V is 5 in the Roman numeral system). Restaurants donate 10% of their gross proceeds and the media donate advertising time to get the word out. All Weaver Street Market locations and Panzanella are participating.

Our contribution goes directly to the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service. The Inter-Faith Council for Social Service is an amazing organization that started way back in the sixties before there were many government organizations helping people who needed food, shelter, and social services. Their list of services includes the Community Kitchen that serves around 80,000 meals a year, the Community House and HomeStart that provide beds and social service counseling for the homeless, Health Clinics, Hispanic Outreach, and more. Please join Weaver Street Market and Panzanella in supporting such a great local organization by eating out on Today - Tuesday, November 10!

Ladies Night Out
Thursday, November 19th
6 to 9 pm

On Thursday, November 19th from 6 to 9 pm, Downtown Historic Hillsborough will light up with specials and giveaways to kick off the holiday shopping season. As you enter the historic district, stop at a "greeting station" where local dignitaries have a special "feathery" gift for the first 300 ladies. Grab a list of the night's special deals and treats and head out to shop, hear music, and meet Mayor Tom Stevens. Be sure to stop by the new offices of the Hillsborough Arts Council just north of Weaver Street Market for their Mad Teapot Party—an exhibition of exquisite teapots, tea bowls, cups and serving dishes created by professional crafts persons throughout the local area.

Making a purchase at participating businesses gets you a raffle ticket for fabulous prizes from local businesses as well as a grand prize "UNC Basketball Package." Tickets must be dropped in the raffle box in the Blue Bayou before the 10 PM drawing. To see a list of participating shops, special offerings, and raffle prizes, visit the Downtown Merchants' website here.

During this evening, 5% of purchases made at participating businesses will go to Hillsborough's Neighbor House. Neighbor House addresses the needs of the homeless population in northern Orange County by supplementing the diets of low income citizens through their "Food for All" program, providing hot, nutritious meals four days a week through a mobile meals ministry. The immediate short-term goal of Neighbor House is to host a soup kitchen in Hillsborough so neighbors can be treated with dignity and eat in a warm inviting environment. The long-term goal is to provide a place for temporary emergency shelter for citizens who find themselves in distressed situations. Additional donations can be made at donation boxes during Ladies' Night Out, or online here.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell
Sunday, November 22, 2009
5:00 at CHICLE

Despite offering glimpses of mankind at its worst, Pray the Devil Back to Hell presents the heartening message that dedicated people can force social improvement. Gini Reticker's plain but powerful nonfiction film reveals how the women of Liberia, outraged at the country's bloodshed, organized a peace movement that brought the nation back from chaos.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell is the riveting, true story of the unsung heroines of Liberia, who, armed only with white t-shirts and courage, brought down a dictator and ended a long, brutal war. Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu calls the film "inspiring, uplifting and a call to action for all of us."

The film is directed by Emmy-winning and Academy Award nominated filmmaker Gini Reticker and produced by Abigail Disney. Pray the Devil Back to Hell premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2008, where it won Best Documentary Feature. The film went on to win awards at Silverdocs, Jackson Hole, Traverse City, Heartland, One World International Human Rights (Prague), and Movies That Matter (Netherlands) Film Festivals.

Clean House with the Next Shred-a-Thon
by Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer

The holidays are fast approaching. Need to get the spare room cleared out for Aunt Gertrude? Take those piles of paper to the next free shred-a-thon, this Saturday, November 14th! Conducted by the Chapel Hill Police Department and Orange County Solid Waste Department with sponsorship from the Chapel Hill YMCA, the free confidential paper recycling shred-a-thon is at the recycling site behind Home Depot in Hillsborough. Any Orange County resident, or those residents that reside in the Town of Chapel Hill found in Durham County, may bring confidential paper that is free of plastic, computer disks and other non-paper items for shredding by local firm A-Shred-Ahead. Those bringing paper in boxes can then recycle their empty cardboard boxes at the nearby recycling site.

Mark Geerckin, Crime Prevention Specialist with the Chapel Hill Police Department, said, "We conduct these events to help prevent identity theft, and it's the most popular thing we do. The public requests it." Both the County Solid Waste Department and law enforcement agencies recommend shredding or otherwise destroying confidential materials before recycling. Shred-a-thons serve the dual purpose of reducing the opportunity for identity theft and recycling paper that might otherwise be disposed of in the landfill. An estimated 400-plus people attended the three events last spring, recycling 15 tons of shredded paper. (To recycle already-shredded paper at the curb or drop-off sites, please place the shredded papers in a paper (not plastic) bag, to prevent them from being wind-blown.)
