| Keep It Simple and Eat in Style! | |||
At times Thanksgiving means excess: a gigantic turkey, three kinds of pie, and eating until you feel sick. That's one way to celebrate—and not necessarily a bad way—but if this year calls for a trimmer budget, you won't have to sacrifice quality or taste. Choose carefully and put together the perfect feast for your crowd. Start with fresh all natural turkey for only $2.49/lb, or pre-roasted turkey for $3.99/lb. If you're not handy in the kitchen, add a quart of gravy and pick two side dishes from our selection, and you'll have a small feast. Our Pioneer Stuffing (with celery, onion, apples, sherry, pecans, and herbs) tastes homemade, and even picky kids will want to eat Crunchy Sweet Potato Bake. And don't forget the bread: a WSM handmade loaf of sourdough or a football-shaped French batard, warmed, sliced, and nestled in a basket, will ensure that every belly is full by the end of the meal.If you're cooking from scratch, look to our weekly owner specials, produce specials, and monthly CAP specials to give your wallet a break. Local organic sweet potatoes are an Owner Special at 99¢/lb through the end of the month; Organic Yukon gold potatoes and organic butternut squash are on sale for everyone for $1.00/lb. Or buy the 'box mix' organic mashed potatoes from Edward and Sons, on sale for $1.99 at our Carrboro and Southern Village stores. Want to make stuffing? Our Yeasted Cornbread makes great stuffing! (Recipe here.) Short on time? Try Arrowhead Mills stuffing mix, on sale for $2.50/10 oz bag; mix in celery ($2.00/ea), pecans ($5.99/lb in the bulk bins), and dried cranberries ($3.99/lb) or whole cranberries ($2.99/bag frozen); here's a simple recipe. Top off dinner with a can of organic cranberry sauce from Grown Right for $1.99. Have an all-natural dessert free of high fructose corn syrup and trans fat, whether you make it yourself or let our pastry bakers make it for you! Choose a pie like apple streusel or maple pecan or a fancier tart like pear almond; or break with tradition and have the Cookie Combo of mini-sized cookies for $10.99. For the small gathering, 6-inch pies are available. If you're baking your own pie, look for canned pumpkin on sale for $1.99, Wholly Wholesome organic frozen pie shells for $2.99, and Arrowhead Mills organic graham cracker crusts for $1.99. Try Gramma Solari's Pumpkin Pie. (Recipe here.) Local Granny Smith apples are on sale as an Owner Special at $2.99 for a 3-lb bag. Whatever you choose, you'll want ice cream; Alden's organic ice cream is on sale for $3.99. Don't forget the wine. For only $8.99 a bottle, bring the world to your table with a Chilean red or white from La Fortuna, or Vinos de Madrid Tinto or Blanco, made by Jesús Días in an old Spanish monastery. And treat the "kids' table" to a bottle of sparkling juice from R.W. Knudsen, on sale for $2.79. You don't have to break the bank to celebrate in style. Shop at the co-op and you'll know you're buying all natural ingredients, safe and delicious meats, and breads and pastries made with locally-milled organic flours. Happy Thanksgiving! |

| Panko! | |||
The Bread Crumbs of the Futureby Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer The Japanese restaurant near my Gramma's place in Florida serves something called 'Crispy Rice.' Every time I order it, I marvel at the crunchy top layer. Did they put the whole bowl of rice into the oven? How did they get that top layer so crispy? Finally they told me: the crisp wasn't actually rice but 'panko,' tasty Japanese-style breadcrumbs. This month, Edward and Sons Organic Panko is on sale, making now the perfect time to try it out. For a value-meal, try Panko-Encrusted Tofu: tofu and Simply Organic spices are on sale. And if your garden is full of unripe green tomatoes, use them up with Panko Fried Green Tomatoes. Panko-Encrusted Tofu Serves approximately 4 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 14 ounces (one box) extra firm tofu, drained and cut into 6 slabs 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs First make the marinade: mix soy sauce, ginger and garlic. Soak the tofu in it, in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. (I slice the tofu right in its plastic box and ladle the marinade over it.) Put the panko on a plate and press the tofu slabs in it to coat them. Place tofu on a pan and bake at 400F for 20 minutes or until golden brown. You may need a spatula to get them off the pan. Leftover panko can be used on a salad. (Note: leftover tofu won't keep its crunch overnight.) Panko Fried Green Tomatoes canola oil for frying panko bread crumbs, on a plate sliced green tomatoes (about 1/4-inch thick; if they are thicker, they'll remain crunchy in the middle) 1 beaten egg salt and pepper to taste (added to egg) Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat until very hot. Dip the tomato slices in the egg, then coat them in the panko mixture. Fry for 3-4 minutes, turning once, until golden brown. If you have leftover egg, pour it into the frying pan and dump the remaining panko on top for a crunchy mini-omelet. |

| Ladies Night Out | |||
Thursday, November 19th6 to 9 pm On Thursday, November 19th from 6 to 9 pm, Downtown Historic Hillsborough will light up with specials and giveaways to kick off the holiday shopping season. As you enter the historic district, stop at a "greeting station" where local dignitaries have a special "feathery" gift for the first 300 ladies. Grab a list of the night's special deals and treats and head out to shop, hear music, and meet Mayor Tom Stevens. Be sure to stop by the new offices of the Hillsborough Arts Council just north of Weaver Street Market for their Mad Teapot Party—an exhibition of exquisite teapots, tea bowls, cups and serving dishes created by professional crafts persons throughout the local area. Making a purchase at participating businesses gets you a raffle ticket for fabulous prizes from local businesses as well as a grand prize "UNC Basketball Package." Tickets must be dropped in the raffle box in the Blue Bayou before the 10 PM drawing. To see a list of participating shops, special offerings, and raffle prizes, visit the Downtown Merchants' website here. To celebrate Ladies Night Out, Weaver Street Market will be sampling a variety of the sides from our Thanksgiving and Holiday Menu. Come by and taste our Pioneer Stuffing, Crunchy Sweet Potato Bake, Autumn Roasted Vegetables, and Swiss Green Bean Casserole. From 6pm until it's all gone. Also, enjoy a special double header Open Mic, with ShackTown and Mandolin Orange bookending our weekly Open Mic music series and lots of great local musicians in between. During this evening, 5% of purchases made at participating businesses will go to Hillsborough's Neighbor House. Neighbor House addresses the needs of the homeless population in northern Orange County by supplementing the diets of low income citizens through their "Food for All" program, providing hot, nutritious meals four days a week through a mobile meals ministry. The immediate short-term goal of Neighbor House is to host a soup kitchen in Hillsborough so neighbors can be treated with dignity and eat in a warm inviting environment. The long-term goal is to provide a place for temporary emergency shelter for citizens who find themselves in distressed situations. Additional donations can be made at donation boxes during Ladies' Night Out, or online here. For more information about Ladies' Night Out call (919) 732-2128. |

Gourmet Composters, for that Person-Who-Has-Everythingby Emily Buehler, Contributing Writer Some people find it hard to compost. There's the Ick Factor—stinky compost waiting to go out to the pile—and the need to walk outside, another chore in our busy lives. And (if you want to do it right) there's the confusion of balancing food waste with brown leaves, adding water, and turning the pile for aeration. Some new 'high tech' composters seek to encourage composting (for a price) by making it easier, and by adding gadgets to the process. If you know someone who's that hard-to-shop-for person, someone struggling to be more green, or someone who just can't resist gadgets, check out these babies: The NatureMill Automatic Composter heats and mixes food waste, speeding the composting process to 2 weeks. It lives indoors, eliminating the daily walk to the compost pile, and comes in 8 flashy colors. It includes sawdust pellets, to keep the right carbon balance inside, and can compost meat, fish, and dairy since it heats to 140 degrees. Designer Russ Cohn's aim was to make a composter "sound, smell, and feel like any household appliance." Because it turns, the unit can't handle fibrous cornhusks, and it uses about 5 KWH per month. It's $399 here. The Ecomposter involves work, but it's a lot more fun than a stationary bin! The futuristic globe can be rotated on its stand or rolled around the yard for aeration, which is aided by internal tubes. (Sounds like a great activity for the kids!) It holds larger loads, up to 71 gallons. Online, the Ecomposter sells for about $150 without a stand, $210 with. Visit the website here. The Worm Factory 360 (about $110) is a stack of trays that you fill with food scraps and shredded newspaper. The worms ascend the stack as they process the food, leaving compost behind. Sounds like a science project. Visit the product website here. Read the Wall Street Journal article whose author tested the composters here. |
